2020 Alfa Romeo Stelvio

Engine light came on. I was told by the first dealership that the coolant was mixing with the engine oil. There was also a vehicle at the shop there for the same issue. after doing some research online, it appears that this is a bigger issue. I bought the car at 20,000 miles and this began happening around 52000 miles. Given the low mileage, this is something that should not be happening to a newer car.

The contact stated that while driving on two occasions at undisclosed speeds, the check engine, oil, and the Automatic START/STOP System Unavailable warning lights illuminated. The vehicle was taken to a dealer twice; however, on the first occasion, the failure was not duplicated. During the second visit, the contact was informed that the coolant was mixing into the engine oil, which caused the engine failure. The contact was informed that several unstated parts needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 44,000.

Back in December 2025 my engine light had come on, upon bringing it to the dealership I had found out that the engine oil and the coolant were mixing. A repair was done to stop this from happening three months later the same issue happened only the previous dealership was no longer servicing Alpha Romeos so I brought it to the only dealer left a mass. I was told that they botched the repair at the previous dealer. Now, three months later from then my engine light is back on again and the same thing is happening. but since neither truly actually repaired the issue now, I’m being told that there’s an issue with my engine. From the beginning when I first brought it to the dealership, this was not an issue. I was actually told that the engine was not misfiring at all, and the engine appeared to be good.My car was not the only one there for this issue so clearly this is a known issue. I also began looking online and realized that there are a lot of people that have this issue so I did bring it to Alfa Romeo‘s attention I feel like at this point the dealerships are making it worse because they’re not fixing the actual issue. I’m also being told this time around that, it was only a temporary fix which I was never told the first two times that they fixed it. No vehicle with 50,000 miles should be having these types of issues. I feel like there is a bigger issue that needs to be addressed within the manufacturer.

The vehicle suddenly loss power while I was driving on a busy interstate. I was almost rear-ended by the vehicle behind me. I had to coast my vehicle to the shoulder of the road crossing lanes of traffic without power! It was terrifying. I could have been wrecked our worse! The check engine lights flashed on saying: "Service Electronic Throttle Control" and "Start / Stop unavailable". I took the car to get it checked out and I was told that this is a common problem currently under recall for the 2018 models, but not my 2020. The mechanic says the scanner code is P008A, a fuel system problem which is likely a faulty fuel pump.

I am writing to formally request an investigation into a serious safety defect affecting my 2020 Alfa Romeo Stelvio . I believe this issue is part of a broader pattern of manufacturing and design flaws that have compromised both safety and reliability •My vehicle experienced a catastrophic engine failure, resulting in a total repair estimate of approximately $32,000. This failure occurred without prior warning signs and is highly unusual for a vehicle of this age and mileage. Based on public recall data for the 2020 Stelvio, the following safety recalls may be related to my vehicle’s failure: •21V878 (Nov 2021): Fuel line sensor housing crack—potential for fuel leak, engine stall, or fire risk. •23V382 (May 2023): Cracks in carbon-ceramic brake rotors—risk of fracture under stress. •24V943 (Dec 2024): Loose connection between brake pedal and booster—risk of loss of braking effectiveness. •24V510 (Jul 2024): Faulty seatbelt buckle sensor—could prevent proper airbag deployment. These defects raise questions about the integrity and safety of critical vehicle systems. I request that my vehicle be evaluated for recall applicability and, if eligible, covered under required repair programs •The failure rendered my vehicle inoperable, imposing an immense financial burden due to the exorbitant repair cost. •I believe this is not an isolated incident but indicative of a systemic defect. •If unresolved, this poses ongoing safety risks to me, my passengers, and other road users. I respectfully request that the NHTSA: 1.Initiate an investigation into whether this engine failure is representative of a larger safety defect across the 2020 Stelvio vehicle population. 2.Review the applicability of relevant recalls (listed above) to my VIN. 3.Require Alfa Romeo to provide recall remedies, reimbursement, or a goodwill resolution where appropriate. 4. Issue a technical directive (TSB or recall) if a broader manufacturing defect is identified. Thank you

The vehicle was taken to a dealer where a diagnostic test was performed, and the vehicle was diagnosed with a blown head gasket which resulted in engine failure. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and offered to cover half the cost for a new engine. The vehicle had not been repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 72,000. Please be advised that Alfa Romeo vehicles are experiencing a very large number of gear shift selecting buttons that "POP OFF" during driving and while parked and can't be driven or moved!!! This is a know reported and COMMON ISSUE according to the ALFA ROMEO SERVICE MANAGER but not a reported recall issue!!! This is unsafe and very dangerous and should be considered a recall safety issue by the manufacture, owners and public immediately!!! The contact stated that after coasting to the side of the roadway, the vehicle was restarted. The contact stated that after restarting the vehicle, the START/STOP light was displayed on the instrument panel. The contact stated that the vehicle was towed to the dealer and was diagnosed and determined that a tune-up was needed. The dealer did not complete a tune-up. The vehicle was then towed to an independent mechanic where it was diagnosed and determined that engine oil had mixed with coolant and then leaked into the engine. The contact was informed that the engine needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and confirmed that there was no recall on the VIN. The contact was referred to the NHTSA Hotline to file a complaint. The approximate failure mileage was 60,000. The VIN was not available.
