The contact owns a 2019 Jeep Cherokee. The contact stated that while the vehicle was idling at a stoplight, the brake pedal was depressed, and the parking brake was activated unintendedly. The contact pressed the parking brake button, but the parking brake failed to release. The vehicle was turned off and restarted, and the parking brake released. The ABS warning light was illuminated. The vehicle was taken to a certified mechanic to be inspected. The certified mechanic informed the contact of NHTSA Campaign Number: 18V917000 (Electrical System). The mechanic informed the contact that the instrument panel needed to be replaced. The mechanic referred the contact to the dealer for assistance. The dealer was contacted and confirmed that the VIN was not included in the recall. An appointment for the vehicle to be inspected was scheduled. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not informed of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 30,000.

The contact turned off and restarted the vehicle and was able to disengage the parking brake. The contact stated that the failure was intermittent, however the parking brake had recently engaged while the vehicle was rolling forward in neutral while going through a car wash. The contact had not taken the vehicle to a local dealer or independent mechanic. The vehicle had not been diagnosed or repaired. The contact researched online and related the failure to NHTSA Action Number: PE22009 (Parking Brake) open investigation. The manufacturer had not been informed of the failure. The contact had taken the vehicle to a local dealer, where it was diagnosed and determined that the vehicle needed the rear brakes and calipers to be replaced. The vehicle had been repaired. The contact stated that the inadvertent parking brake activation had reoccurred. The contact researched online and related the failure to NHTSA Action Number: PE22009 (Parking Brake). The manufacturer had not been informed of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 46,000.

Consequence & remedy
Consequence: A failed PTU may result in a loss of drive power or vehicle rollaway, increasing the risk of a crash or injury.
Remedy: Dealers will update the Drivetrain Control Drivetrain Control Module, PTU, and Electronic Park Brake software, and replace the PTU, as necessary, free of charge. Interim owner notification letters explaining the safety risk were mailed June 25, 2026. Additional letters will be sent once the final remedy becomes available.
