FIRST INCIDENT OCCURRED-WHEN I LIVED IN FREDERICKSBURG,VA -I WAS DRIVING ON RT 1 GOING DOWNHILL TOWARD A STOP LIGHT(NO VEHICLE IN FRONT OF ME). AS I WAS COMING TO A STOP AT THE LIGHT THE VEHICLE BRAKES WERE PRESS DOWN AS FAR AS IT COULD GO AND I HEAR A CLICKING NOISE ON THE PANEL WHICH WAS THE ESC LIGHT. I HAD TO TURN THE CAR OFF AND PUT IT IN PARK TO START IT, IN ORDER TO CONTINUE TO DRIVE. THIS HAS HAPPENED A COUPLE OTHER TIMES. TIRES HAVE BEEN REPLACED COUPLE OF TIMES AND BRAKE PADS BECAUSE OF GROVES AND GRINDING NOISE. NOW I'M HAVING PROBLEMS WITH MY CAR WON'T START - HAD BATTERY CHECKED AT ADVANCED AUTO AND ITS GOOD. ESC LIGHT ON WITH CLICKING NOISE WHEN ATTEMPT TO START CAR. NOW THAT MY VEHICLE HAVE ALMOST 123,000 MILES, I FOUND A RECALL NHTSA: 09V122000. CALLED HYUNDAI CUSTOMER ASSISTANCE CENTER 1-800-633-5151 THIS MORNING AT 08:18 AM EASTERN STANDARD TIME, I ADVISE THE REPRESENTATIVE THAT I HAD BEEN HAVING PROBLEM WITH MY VEHICLE AS DESCRIBED IN THIS RECALL. SHE SAID MY VEHICLE IS NOT ELIGIBLE BECAUSE IT WAS NOT IN THE LIST OF VIN'??S THEY HAD COMPLAINTS. SHOULD THE RECALL HAVE A CUT OFF BECAUSE OF MILEAGE, IS THERE A DETERMINATION THAT THE PROBLEM WAS CORRECTED IN MY VEHICLE BY VIN, DOES IT PERTAIN TO VEHICLE MANUFACTURED IN A PARTICULAR REGION OF THE US, OVERSEAS OR DEFECTIVE PARTS ON THE VEHICLE. SECOND OWNER OF VEHICLE, PURCHASED VEHICLE FROM HYUNDAI CERTIFIED DEALER WHEN RETURNED FROM DEPLOYMENT. I'??M A VETERAN AND THE VEHICLE HAS A LOT OF HIGHWAY MILEAGE TO AND FROM THE NEAREST VA MEDICAL HOSPITAL, VA COMMUNITY OUT-PATIENT BASE CLINIC, AND OTHER MEDICAL SERVICES. *TR

MY 2005 HYUNDAI TUCSON (2.7L V-6 4WD) HAS FOR THE LAST 1.5 YEARS HAS BEEN: 1.STALLING OUT 2. RUNNING VERY ROUGH WITH NO POWER (ESPECIALLY WHEN RAINING OR AFTER SEVERAL DAYS OF RAIN) 3. CRANKS OVER BUT DOESN'T START 4. ENGINE QUITS RUNNING ON HIGHWAY (LEAVING US STRANDED ON ROUTE I-80). ALL INTERMITTENTLY! I HAVE HAD THE CAR IN A REPAIR SHOP WHERE THEY REPLACED THE IGNITION COIL PACK ASSEMBLY (6/2011). THEN IT FAILED AGAIN BUT NOT LONG ENOUGH TO GET SOMETHING DIAGNOSED, SO I DROVE IT JUST KNOWING SOMEDAY IT WAS GOING TO HAPPEN AGAIN. FINALLY IT FAILED AGAIN (1/1/2012) THIS TIME LONG ENOUGH FOR ME TO GET THE CODE/S FROM THE ECM. IT HAD A HARD CRANKSHAFT POSITION SENSOR FAILURE. THEN IT RAN FINE. I REPLACED THE CRANKSHAFT POSITION SENSOR AND UPON REMOVAL AND INSPECTION THE SENSORS THREE WIRES WERE BARE. THE OUTER INSULATION COVERING ALL THREE WIRES WAS NOT ONLY GONE BUT THE INDIVIDUAL WIRE INSULATION WAS ALSO MISSING (ABOUT 3" OF BARE COPPER WIRE). A QUICK LOOK OF SOME WEBSITES TURNED UP PHOTOS OF FOUR OTHER CRANKSHAFT POSITION SENSORS THAT LOOKED THE SAME (MISSING INSULATION/ WIRES SHORTING) ALL COMING FROM HYUNDAI TUCSON'S. IN MY OPINION THIS IS A VERY VERY DANGEROUS SITUATION. LOOKING AT OTHER NTSB COMPLAINTS FOR 05, 06 TUCSON'S TURNS UP NEARLY 60 OTHER STALLING ENGINE; RUNNING ROUGH; ENGINE CUTS OFF; TYPE COMPLAINTS. *TR

BRAND NEW CAR- A FEW DAYS AFTER PURCHASING AND DRIVING THE CAR, NOTICED CAR WAS NOT DRIVING RIGHT. SEVERAL SYMPTOMS BECAME NOTICEABLE. CAR WOULD JERK WHEN ACCELERATING AND BRAKING. CARS PICK UP WAS DELAYED AND HAD A VERY UNCOMFORTABLE VIBRATION, WHILE IN IDLE AND WHILE DRIVING, TO THE POINT OF GETTING NAUSEOUS WHILE DRIVING IN THE CAR. TOOK CAR TO HYUNDAI SERVICE AND TOLD THEM OF SYMPTOMS AND MY CONCERNS OF SOMETHING NOT RIGHT WITH THE CAR. THE MECHANICS FELT THE PROBLEMS I EXPLAINED ABOVE AND SAID SOMETHING WAS WRONG, NOW HAD TO FIGURE OUT WHAT EXACTLY. SEVERAL TESTS WERE DONE ON THE CAR BUT NOTHING SHOWED UP ON ELECTRICAL GRID. SERVICE HAD TO CALL A HIGHER TECH OUT IN CALIFORNIA TO SEE WHAT TO DO NEXT. CALIFORNIA TECH MADE THEM RUN SEVERAL TESTS, ALL THIS TOOK MORE THEN 2 WEEKS UNTIL THEY FINALLY FIGURED OUT THAT THE ENGINES THROTTLE ASSY WAS DEFECTIVE AND NOT FUNCTIONING PROPERLY. THEY SAID THAT THIS ALSO CAUSED THE SENSOR TO MALFUNCTION. THEY REPLACED THE THROTTLE ASSY AND CLAIM THE CAR IS REPAIRED. NO LONGER TRUST CAR IS SAFE TO DRIVE DUE TO THE ELECTRICAL AND ENGINE DEFECTS THAT WHERE FOUND AFTER THE ORIGINAL INSPECTIONS BY THE MANUFACTURE AND THE DEALERSHIP FAILED TO FIND THESE DEFECTS WITH THE CAR AND SOLD IT. *TR

OWNER (HYUNDAI TUCSON 2008 GLS) HYUNDAI CUSTOMER SERVICE AND REPRESENTATIVE IS THE WORSE. MY VEHICLE HAS BEEN CUTTING OFF WITHOUT ANY WARNING. I'VE TAKEN MY CAR TO THE DEALER NUMEROUS TIME INDICATING THE CAR CUT-OFFS WITHOUT WARNING. IN ADDITION, I TOOK MY CAR TO THE DEALER IN 2009 COMPLAINING ABOUT THE CUT-OFF AND NOT PICKING UP SPEED. THE DEALER OURISMAN HYUNDAI (LAUREL) SERVICE REPRESENTATIVE INDICATED THERE IS A VALUE THAT ALLOWS THE AIR FLOW INTAKE FOR THE VEHICLE NOT OPENING UP PROPERLY. NEEDLESS TO SAY; THEY HAVE DONE NOTHING. AGAIN THE VEHICLE WENT BACK IN FOR CHECK ENGINE LIGHT AND CUTOFF. THEIR EXPLANATION, THE GAS TANK WAS NOT TIGHT. IN 2010 THE VEHICLE CUTOFF WITH WARNING AND NOW IS CUTTING OFF WITHOUT WARNING. TO DATE THE VEHICLE HAS CUTOFF WITHOUT WARNING MORE THAN 10 TIMES TO INCLUDE AUGUST 16, 2011 (SPEED 10 MPH), AUGUST 17, 2011 (SPEED 15 MPH), AUGUST 23, 2011 (SPEED 20 MPH) AND AUGUST 29, 2011, (SPEED 60 MPH) WITHOUT WARNING. EACH TIME, I'VE TAKEN THE VEHICLE TO THE DEALER; HOWEVER THEY CANNOT REPLICATE THE PROBLEM. AS I MENTIONED TO THEM, THE VEHICLE CUT-OFFS WHEN IT WANTS TO WITHOUT WARNING. THE CUTOFF WITHOUT WARNING IS AN ACCIDENT WAITING TO HAPPEN. THE AUGUST 29, 2011(AT 60 MPH) 7:45AM CUT-OFF WAS FORTUNATE THE VEHICLE IN THE BACK DID NOT REAR END ME. THE VEHICLE CUTOFF, AGAIN ON AUGUST 29, 2011 AT 5:45 PM. THE VEHICLE HAS BEEN WITH THE DEALER EACH TIME, HOWEVER THEY CANNOT DUPLICATION OF LOCATE THE PROBLEM. HOWEVER, THEY WANT ME TO PAY TO REPLACE THE MASS AIR FLOW SENSOR WITH MAY NOT BE THE PROBLEM. THE JULY INCIDENT WAS THE FIRST TIME. THE VEHICLE IS BACK AT THE DEALER TRYING TO DETERMINE THE PROBLEM. IN STARTING THE CAR AGAIN, FUEL SMELL IS VERY STRONG AND THE CAR SHAKES WITH BLACK SMOKE COMING FROM THE EXHAUST/TAIL PIPE. THE DEALER WAS ABLE TO DUPLICATE. IN ADDITION,WHEN FEET IS ON BRAKES, THE TRANSMISSION REVEL UP AS IF THE CAR IS GOING TO TAKE OFF. THIS HAPPENS WHEN APPLYING THE BRAKES AND COMING TO A STOP. THE DEALER HAS DUPLICATED THE CRANKING PROBLEM. I WAS TOLD SEVERAL COMPONENTS WERE BEING REPLACED ONLY TO FIND OUT THAT IF THE FUEL PUMP,FUEL PUMP WIRING, CLEANING OF CORROSION FROM THE WIRING HARNESS WAS DONE, THE CAR STILL WOULD NOT CRANK AFTER DRIVING THE CAR AND TURNING IT OFF. AFTER CALLING THE CONSUMER AFFAIRS OFFICE SEVERAL TIMES AND WAS TOLD THAT A CASE MANAGER WOULD CALL, THE CASE MANAGER NEVER CALLED. THE DEALER REQUESTED A FIELD ENGINEER. AFTER THE FUEL SMELL CONTINUE TO WORSEN, TELEPHONE CONSUMER AFFAIRS FOR THE FOURTH TIME. THIS TIME, THE FIRST RESPONDER ANSWERING THE PHONE LAUGHED WHEN I TOLD HER THAT I WAS AFRAID OF DRIVING THE CAR AND FEARED THAT IT WOULD CATCH ON FIRE OR BLOW UP ACCORDING TO MECHANICS. THE REPRESENTATIVE SNICKERED! SHE TOLD ME THAT THE FIELD ENGINEER DETERMINED THAT THE WIRING HARNESS HAD BEEN DAMAGED WHEN I SUPPOSEDLY PRE-WIRED THE CAR FOR AN AFTER MARKET ALARM SYSTEM. HE DECIDED TO VOID THE WARRANTY SO THE DEALER STOPPED TRYING TO FIGURE OUT WHAT IS WRONG WITH THE CAR. I WAS TOLD I HAD TO FIX THE WIRING HARNESS. THE PROBLEM WITH THIS CONCLUSION IS THAT I NEVER HAD AN AFTER MARKET ALARM PUT ON THE CAR NOR DID I BUY A CAR WITH AN AFTER MARKET ALARM SYSTEM. I HAVE EXPERIENCE THE PROBLEM FROM JANUARY 2011 AND CONTINUES TO EXPERIENCE. I CALLED FOR THE CEO OF HYUNDAI WHO NEVER RESPONDED. THE CASE IS WITH REGIONAL WHO HAS YET TO CALL.

UNEXPECTED ACCELERATION OF ENGINE WHEN AT COMPLETE STOP (AT STOP SIGN) AND FOOT HAD BEEN ON BRAKE FOR AT LEAST 30 SECONDS. SHIFT WAS IN DRIVE, ENGINE WENT FULL SPEED, ALL WHEELS SPUN ON GROUND, CREATING MUCH SMOKE. FOOT REMAINED ON BRAKE. NOTE THAT ACCELERATOR PEDAL WHEN NOT ENGAGED IS BELOW LEVEL OF BRAKE PEDAL WHEN IT IS ENGAGED AND THAT WHEN ACCELERATOR PEDAL IS FULL DOWN THEN ITS LEVEL IS 3 INCHES BELOW THE BRAKE PEDAL LEVEL WHEN IT IS ENGAGED. RIGHT FOOT WAS ON BRAKE - THUS NO WAY FOR OPERATOR ERROR SINCE IF FOOT HAD BEEN OFF BRAKE THE VEHICLE WOULD HAVE SHOT FORWARD INTO INTERSECTION AND THERE WOULD HAVE BEEN A MULTIPLE CAR ACCIDENT. AND THERE IS NO WAY TO HAVE RIGHT FOOT ON BRAKE AND TO HAVE ACCELERATOR FULL DOWN AT THE SAME TIME. SHIFTED TO NEUTRAL, ENGINE CONTINUED TO RACE, SOME NOISE WHEN SHIFTED - MAY HAVE HARMED TRANSMISSION. TURNED OFF IGNITION SWITCH AND ENGINE STOPPED. VEHICLE STARTED NORMALLY AFTER THIS. AC WAS ON. CAR HAD FULL DEALER SERVICE AT 45,661 MILES AND STATE INSPECTION A WEEK BEFORE THIS INCIDENT. AT 45755 MILES, TECH CONFIRMED SES LIGHT; FOUND CODE P0150 OXYGEN SENSOR- NOT REPLACED, SOFTWARE UPDATED FOR ENGINE CONTROL MODULE. UPDATED 06/24/11 *BF

NHTSA received a petition on or about July 18, 2022, requesting that Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) 141 be applied to all electric and hybrid vehicles operating in the United States. The petition can be reviewed at NHTSA.gov under ODI Number 11486072. FMVSS 141 establishes performance requirements for pedestrian alert sounds for motor vehicles. The standard applies to hybrid and electric vehicles that have a gross vehicle weight rating of 4,536 KG or less or are defined as low-speed vehicles. The standard became fully applicable to all such vehicles manufactured on or after March 1, 2021.On January 27, 2023, NHTSA opened Defect Petition (DP) 22-005 to evaluate the subject matter described in the petition. On June 24, 2023 and as supplemented on June 25, 2023, the petitioner notified NHTSA he was withdrawing his petition. The petitioner indicated that, based on his review of data, there is no justification for asserting potential benefits that could be derived from actions sought by my petition. Based on the petitioner's withdrawal, DP22-005 is closed. Closure of this DP does not represent a determination by NHTSA regarding the subject matter of the petition.
