ENGINE ON OUR 2005 HYUNDAI TUCSON TURNED OFF IN THE MIDDLE OF A BUSY HIGHWAY GOING APPROXIMATELY 40 MPH. MANAGED TO TURN/ROLL OFF THE ROAD WITHOUT POWER OR POWER STEERING. HAD TO RESTART CAR SEVERAL TIMES AS IT WOULD STALL OUT ON ACCELERATION OR WHEN SLOWING TO TURN. PAID DEALERSHIP $209 TO "FIX" THE PROBLEM, BUT THE PROBLEM STILL EXISTS A MONTH LATER AND IS GETTING PROGRESSIVELY WORSE EACH DAY. DEALERSHIP DID OIL CHANGE, VEHICLE INSPECTION AND REPLACED "P0444 EVAP PURGE CONTROL VALVE CONNECTOR." CLEARLY THIS DID NOT SOLVE THE PROBLEM AS THIS SEVERE SAFETY HAZARD PERSISTS. HYUNDAI HAS NO ANSWERS AND SEVERAL OTHER SIMILAR COMPLAINTS WE'VE READ HAVE BEEN FILED WITH THE NHTSA. SOMETHING HAS GOT TO BE DONE. *TR

NO CELL SERVICE THERE AND HAD TO WALK TO A LOCAL RANCH FOR HELP AND A JUMP. BATTERY REQUIRED REPLACEMENT FREQUENTLY. DEALER TESTED ON TWO OCCASIONS AND THEY COULD NOT RESOLVE, REPLACED BATTERY TWICE. IVE REPLACED BATTERIES NUMEROUS OTHER TIMES AT LEAST EVERY TWO YEARS. LAST VISIT BY AAA TESTED 1 AMP HIGH RESISTANCE SHORT IN ELECTRICAL SYSTEM BUT GOOD RELATIVELY NEW BATTERY. I NOW CHARGE THE BATTERY ABOUT THREE TIMES A YEAR WITH A BATTERY CHARGER, TAKING APPROXIMATELY 8 HOURS OF CHARGE WHEN THE BATTERY IS DEAD AT HOME. I DO NOT DRIVE VERY FAR OUT OF FEAR THAT I'LL BE STRANDED. I'VE USED UP MY 3 ALOTED AAA VISITS ON THIS PROBLEM. *TR

THE CAR WOULD NOT START WHEN I WENT TO START IT UP. IT WAS PARKED OUTSIDE OVERNIGHT IN 20 DEGREE WEATHER AND JUST CLICKED WHEN I WENT TO START IT. I HAD TO CALL HYUNDAI ROADSIDE ASSISTANCE TO COME AND JUMP THE CAR. THEY DID AND IT TOOK THEM A COUPLE OF TRIES AND THEY HAD TO USE THEIR VEHICLE, NOT THE PORTABLE STARTER. THEY SAID THAT THE BATTERY WAS DRAINED. THERE WAS NO REASON FOR THAT BECAUSE THERE WERE NO LIGHTS LEFT ON. I TOOK IT IN FOR SERVICE AND THEY CHECKED THE BATTERY AND SAID IT WAS IT HAPPENED AGAIN ON FEBRUARY 3, 2013 AND I HAD TO DO THE SAME THING. I HAD THE DEALERSHIP CHECK THE BATTERY AND IT WAS FINE. ON MARCH 15, 2013, THE DEALERSHIP CHECKED THE BATTERY AND IT REGISTERED A STRONG CHARGE. THE DEALERSHIP WANTED ME TO LEAVE THE CAR THERE OVERNIGHT TO DUPLICATE THE CONDITIONS OF THE CAR NOT STARTING UP, BUT WERE NOT WILLING TO LET ME USE A FREE LOANER. AS THE TEMPERATURE WARMED UP, IT WAS NOT AN ISSUE. HOWEVER, TODAY I WENT TO START MY CAR AND LEAVE FOR WORK, THE VEHICLE DID NOT START UP. IT JUST CLICKED, THE RADIO WORKED, LIGHTS WORKED, BUT THE ENGINE WOULD NOT TURN OVER. I AM TAKING THE VEHICLE TO THE DEALERSHIP LATER TODAY AND THEY WILL LET ME USE A LOANER FOR FREE. I HOPE THAT THEY ARE ABLE TO DIAGNOSE AND FIX THE PROBLEM AS I NEED MY VEHICLE FOR TRANSPORTATION. *TR

THE DOWNHILL BRAKE CONTROL (DBC) INDICATOR AND THE ELECTRONIC STABILITY CONTROL (ESC) LIGHTS COME ON WHILE CAR IS IN OPERATION FOR NO APPARENT REASON - DRIVING NORMAL SPEED - ABOUT 45 MPH, IN NORMAL DRY ROAD CONDITIONS. WHEN I GO TO STOP THE CAR, THE SHIFT LEVER GETS STUCK AND CANNOT PUT IN PARK. IT TAKES A FEW TRIES AT JIGGLING THE SHIFT LEVER AND JIGGLING KEY IN IGNITION TO GET IT TO GO INTO PARK. AFTER SHUTTING OFF ENGINE, RESTART IS NORMAL WITH THE DBC AND ESC LIGHTS NO LONGER ON. THIS HAS HAPPENED AT LEAST 10 TIMES SINCE ORIGINAL TIME I NOTICED IT A FEW MONTHS AGO. DUE TO DEATH IN THE FAMILY AND OTHER ISSUES, HAVE NOT BEEN ABLE TO TAKE IT INTO TO DEALER SINCE THE FIRST OCCURRENCE I NOTICED IN MARCH. I'M TAKING IT IN TOMORROW AND WILL ADVISE. *TR

NHTSA received a petition on or about July 18, 2022, requesting that Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) 141 be applied to all electric and hybrid vehicles operating in the United States. The petition can be reviewed at NHTSA.gov under ODI Number 11486072. FMVSS 141 establishes performance requirements for pedestrian alert sounds for motor vehicles. The standard applies to hybrid and electric vehicles that have a gross vehicle weight rating of 4,536 KG or less or are defined as low-speed vehicles. The standard became fully applicable to all such vehicles manufactured on or after March 1, 2021.On January 27, 2023, NHTSA opened Defect Petition (DP) 22-005 to evaluate the subject matter described in the petition. On June 24, 2023 and as supplemented on June 25, 2023, the petitioner notified NHTSA he was withdrawing his petition. The petitioner indicated that, based on his review of data, there is no justification for asserting potential benefits that could be derived from actions sought by my petition. Based on the petitioner's withdrawal, DP22-005 is closed. Closure of this DP does not represent a determination by NHTSA regarding the subject matter of the petition.
