issue related to Honda Sticky Steering problem. Problem is being investigated in over 530,000 2022-2023 Honda Civic, 2023 Honda CR-V and 2023 Accura Integra vehicles. I own a 2023 Honda CRV Hybrid and would like to report that I am experiencing the same issues with Sticky Steering and am adding my concern to the list of other car owners with similar issues. I hope that a recall will be instituted to fix this serious safety problem/defect. It is my understanding that the NHTSA has now upgraded the investigation and look forward to a speedy resolution to fix the problem. Honda issued a TSB 23-037 back in July which told dealers to replace the electronic power steering gearboxes on 2022-2023 Civics if customers complained about sticky steering. A recall or similar order needs to be established to fix same issue with 2023 Honda CRV's.

After driving for a period of time, the steering exhibits "sticky" behavior. By this I mean that there is unexpected and unusual resistence to the steering of the vehicle. This behavior developed over a period of time - when new, the vehicle did not exhibit such behavior. While I cannot assert that this is unsafe, it certainly does not instill a sense of security or safety in driving the vehicle. I believe this needs to be investigated.

We were in a parking lot. When my husband (driver) put the car into reverse, it accelerated wildly, and the brakes would not work. We almost struck a pedestrian. We were able to put the car into park to stop it. We waited, checked to see if something was stuck under the pedal. Then my husband put the car into drive. It accelerated wildly again. Brakes did not work. We nearly struck a car. We waited. Finally, we thought the car was ok, and we attempted to leave the parking lot to head home. The car did it again. We called AAA and had the car towed to the nearest Honda dealership. It has been there for more than a week, and the service department is telling me that there is nothing wrong with the car. The American Honda rep told us the same thing.

This vehicle has a binding sensation in the steering when at the steering wheel is at the center, i.e. vehicle going straight. When making small adjustments to stay in a lane, some extra effort is needed, then once that is overcome, the steering wheel moves normally. There were no warnings apparent on the dash, nor has the vehicle been inspected by a dealer, as this began to occur on a long road trip. The road surface does not seem to affect the behavior. When lane-keeping is active, you can still feel the binding as the electric motors for the steering overcome the sticky area. The vehicle is available for inspection. I hope to have it evaluated by a dealer soon. This did not cause any accident or out-of-control situation, however I am concerned this may be a precursor event to a larger failure of the steering.

The contact stated while driving approximately 60 MPH and depressing the accelerator pedal to make a lane change, the vehicle revved up and hesitated before gaining forward momentum. The contact stated he heard an abnormal sound coming from the engine compartment while depressing the accelerator pedal. The contact stated that it sounded as if the electric hybrid propulsion system had shut off. The contact stated no warning light was illuminated. The contact stated that the failure to accelerate was intermittent and occurred when he was on the highway and was depressing the accelerator pedal to gain speed. Additionally, the contact stated that he observed that the vehicle would start independently and that the power door locks would fail to operate as needed. The contact stated that on several occasions after turning off the vehicle and entering the residence the contact heard the vehicle emitting a remote start beep. The contact stated that he approached the vehicle and the vehicle had independently started. The contact also became aware that the battery was drained intermittently, and the vehicle needed to be jumpstarted. The contact had taken the vehicle to a local dealer, where it was diagnosed and determined that the battery needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired. The contact had not retrieved the vehicle from the dealer. The manufacturer was informed of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 5,000.

2023 Sport Hybrid CR-V drove fine up until the first service. This was completed around 10k miles when my maintenance minder popped up at 15%. When the car was returned I noticed that the steering wheel felt "sticky" at times when driving, which usually occurred when driving straight. When trying to make slight adjustments in order to correct myself to stay straight, I have to apply more force to loosen the steering wheel which seems like it is catching on something. The excess force applied causes the car to make a jerking/jumping motion in either direction once it breaks free which then requires a quick adjustment in the opposite direction. So far this situation hasn't caused me to swerve into an adjacent lane hitting another car. This situation seems to occur more frequently when going 60+ MPH. However, this has still occurred to me while just driving around town at lower speeds, around 40 MPH.

EA23003 · Momentary Increased Steering Effort

Opened Nov 29, 2023 · Closed Jan 28, 2025

Status: closed (inferred from source dates) · Steering

On November 29, 2023, the Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) opened this Engineering Analysis (EA23003) to assess allegations of momentary increase in steering effort in model years (MY) 2022-2023 Honda Civic, 2023MY Honda CR-V, and 2023MY Acura Integra vehicles (subject vehicles). The complaints received by ODI alleged that the subject vehicles experienced a momentary increase in required steering effort (described as “sticky steering”) occurring mostly at highway speeds after driving for an extended amount of time; these complaints could not be duplicated during dealer service technicians’ quick test drives.  The complaints had been received over the previous two years with most occurring with low vehicle mileage. The steering gear of these vehicles is aided by an electrical power assist unit. This power assist unit inputs force on the steering rack via a worm gear and worm wheel assembly. During PE23005, Honda stated this condition of momentary increase in steering effort occurs due to two factors within this power assist unit. First, during manufacturing, the steering worm wheel goes through annealing and component conditioning processes. These processes cause internal stress and strain within the steering worm  wheel. This strain is slowly released over the first few months of the vehicle life. Over time, the released strain causes deformation of the teeth on the worm wheel, causing the worm gear to catch on the worm wheel. This catching results in the driver’s momentary increased steering effort. Second, the manufacturing process did not guarantee consistent grease application and, therefore, some subject vehicles received insufficient grease which contributed to the momentary increase in steering effort. During EA23003, ODI further analyzed the potential safety related consequences of the momentary increase in steering effort. NHTSA’s Vehicle Research and Test Center (VRTC) duplicated the allegations of increased steering effort. In addition, VRTC discovered the steering worm wheel and worm gear tended to push grease out of the meshing area, resulting in large amounts of grease resting on top of the worm wheel. Information Request responses collected and reviewed by ODI showed Honda had also discovered this additional root cause during NHTSA’s EA. In addition, Honda discovered the preload of the worm wheel gear spring was set too high, increasing the gear slide load and resulting in higher friction and increased torque fluctuation when steering. The number of consumer complaints made to ODI continued to increase with the expansion of scope from the PE to the EA. Additionally, during EA23003, ODI received ten complaints alleging a crash, in addition to the 13 complaints ODI had received as of the time it opened EA23003. In total, 23 crashes have been reported to ODI due to this alleged defect. On October 3, 2024, Honda filed NHTSA Recall No. 24V-744 to address this defect. The recall will provide consumers with a new steering worm wheel gear spring with a decreased load. Additionally, dealerships will add additional grease and relocate any grease sitting on top of the worm wheel back into the meshing area. The scope of this recall includes all Honda vehicles that were manufactured with this specific improperly produced steering worm wheel and spring. In view of the recall action being taken by Honda, ODI is closing EA23003. NHTSA reserves the right to take additional action if warranted by future circumstances.
