Cam Phasers. Ford refuses to repair cam phasers despite having a recall previously and never fixed by previous owner. Ford quoted the repair at $8k. Previously recall stated safety concerns over faulty manufacturing of cam phasers, having plastic parts and exposed parts rather than metal and enclosed parts like in they install during the repair. While I understand the repair was a voluntary recall, it's still a safety concern as engine has rough idle, rough shift changes, sometimes will jolt forward while idling and possible engine shut off due to damage to camshaft caused by the failing cam Phasers. This should be an NHTSA ordered recall.

Driving on the freeway, my transmission made a loud bang jerked the truck and then completely failed. I was traveling a consistent speed around 75 MPH it was in 10th gear just starting on an incline to an overpass. The jerk caused me to almost pull out of my lane, the failure happening on an incline made the vehicle slow considerably, with no shoulder to pull over on it had enough momentum to make it over the high point in the over pass and I coasted to the side of the freeway as soon as I could. Transmission fluid was pouring out of vent tube covering the underside of the truck and getting all over the road. I also ride motorcycles and understand how bad of a situation that can be for anyone riding behind me. Towed to aamco who inspected and diagnosed as the CDF drum failed and had to have the entire transmission rebuilt. No warning light and no indication that it was having any problems before the failure. My daily commute is around 40 miles one way, I was coming home from work, and I was approximately 8 miles from my home. I doubt aamco has the transmission still and the incident happened about 2 months ago.

This is related to the incident report number XXX I filed previously. Before, between, and after that incident and this one reported today. The vehicle performs mostly normal, the severe issues are completely random and unpredictable. On 4/28/26 I started my truck and left to take my daughter to her [XXX] pediatrician appointment. I left my neighborhood and turned left into traffic. I didn’t speed up much, as the red light on the street stopped me about 100 yards down the road. Then, when green light hit I attempted to accelerate. The vehicle appeared to be stuck in 6th gear and would only rev up the RPMs to about 4000 and barely move forward. I managed to drive about 50ft and get the vehicle off onto the grass shoulder infront of someone’s house. I shifted the vehicle from park to drive and turned it on and off multiple times. This did not resolve the issue and I eventually put the truck in 4x4 in an attempt to make more power and drive forward. This entire time I’m on the shoulder of morning 55mph traffic, hazard lights on, with my infant in the back seat. I managed to get the vehicle to shift into 2nd gear and drive up the road. Once it came up to operating temperature it would shift into higher gears and we made it to the pediatrician. The truck stalled out similarly at two other stopped intersections and on the parking deck before we arrived at our destination. I called my wife and had her drive our daughter home after the appointment. I drove the truck home, on the same route, and it acted as if nothing was wrong. It shifted hard between 1-3rd but otherwise performed well enough. I have scheduled a transmission rebuild with a non-Ford service center for 5/4/26. It is extremely concerning that these issues are happening to myself and others with the 10R80 10-speed and Ford isn’t being forced to recall these vehicles. My truck is a 2019 with 86000 miles now. I am the owner of a 2019 Ford F-150 Lariat equipped with a 10-sp transmission. In late 2021, early 2022 - whiled the vehicle still had warranty - I reported to a Ford dealership that the transmission was experiencing harsh shifting and jerking. At that time, I was informed that no issue could be identified. I complained of this each time I took the vehicle into the dealer for an oil change. After the warranty expired on this vehicle in 2023, the condition worsened. By 2024, the transmission began intermittently shifting into neutral while the vehicle was in motion. This occurred both when accelerating through lower gears (notably between 3rd, 4th, and 8th,9th) and while driving at highway speeds. These incidents created serious safety risks. On multiple occasions, the vehicle unexpectedly shifted into neutral while changing lanes on the interstate highway. The vehicle RPMs spiked and I was unable to regain power and had to maneuver to the shoulder while a semi-truck traveling at high speed approached from behind. This placed me in a dangerous and potentially life-threatening situation. On another occassion, the vehicle unexpectedly shifted into neutral while I was proceeding through intersections after a green light, leaving me without power, and unable to shift back into drive in active traffic. There were no service, or warning lights on prior to these failures. The issues occurred suddenly without notice, creating unpredictable and hazardous conditions. Warning indicators only appeared after the condition progressed where the vehicle became un-driveable. Two dealers have since inspected the vehicle and confirmed that the internal transmission components have failed. I was advised that a full transmission replacement is necessary. The issue has occurred multiple times and has progressively worsened since it was first reported under warranty. There was failure to identify and address safety risks sooner and this is extremely concerning. This is a known issue!

4/10/26 - I left my neighborhood to turn right, from a stop, onto a 55 mph highway. Headed to the grocery store, with my 6-month old daughter. The trucks transmission (F150 10R80 10 speed) would not shift any higher than 2nd gear, of 10 gears. This caused the truck to not accelerate at a reasonable speed and only do about 15mph. Two cars behind me nearly collided with me as I could not achieve or maintain speed. I quickly adjusted the steering and pulled the truck over on the grass shoulder. This avoided any accidents and only scared myself, my daughter, and two other drivers behind me. My daughter and I could have easily been severely wounded or killed. I did not know or expect the transmission would suddenly fail. This failure to change gears or hard shifts is a classic symptom of the Ford 10R80 transmissions CDF drum failure. Ford knows about this issue and refuses to recall these vehicles or repair them unless they are under warranty. My truck has 85k miles, just outside the 60k mile warranty. My neighbor with two small children has the same truck with the same issue, also potentially endangering their lives. This should be a forced recall by Ford to protect everyone on the road.

On January 27, 2023, the Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) opened PE23-001 to investigate allegations of A-pillar trim panel detachment on model year (MY) 2011-2019 Ford Explorer vehicles. At the time of opening, the office had received 164 Vehicle Owner Questionnaires (VOQs) reporting this failure. ODI has received 671 VOQs regarding this failure, including 1 alleged crash and 2 alleged injuries. Some consumers have reported that the failure occurred while they were driving at highway speeds, with the detached trim panel entering the path of travel of the vehicle behind them, requiring the driver of the following vehicle to take evasive action. It is noteworthy that motorists who experience this type of road hazard are less likely to accurately identify the subject vehicle the item detached from and report the event to the NHTSA. In its April 17, 2023 response to ODI’s information request, Ford provided 175 consumer complaints (including field reports) and 14,162 warranty claims related to A-pillar trim panel detachment. Ford relayed that the subject vehicles utilize a plastic A-pillar bracket, which is bolted to the vehicle structure during assembly. The A-pillar trim panel is attached to the bracket utilizing 7 plastic clips. Contributory factors which have been identified by Ford as leading to the subject defect include incomplete installation at the assembly plant, inadequate part stack up, damage to fasteners during installation, and failure to follow proper repair procedure during windshield replacements or other services. On January 19, 2024, Ford filed safety recall 24V-031 for MY 2011-2019 Ford Explorer vehicles to address the subject defect. In the Part 573 Safety Recall Report, Ford identified that a detached A-pillar trim panel can create a road hazard for other road users, increasing the risk of a crash. The recall remedy includes an inspection of the existing A-pillar trim panel and, if necessary, the replacement of the component. The remedy A-pillar trim panels will be installed with an additional adhesive for robustness and utilize an inspection procedure to ensure full engagement of all the retention clips during installation. In view of the recall action being taken by Ford, ODI is closing this Preliminary Evaluation. The agency reserves the right to take additional action if warranted by future circumstances. To review the reports cited in the Closing Resume ODI Report Identification Number document, go to NHTSA.gov.
