MY 2003 SUZUKI SV1000S STARTED RUNNING POORLY AFTER I FILLED UP THE GAS TANK ON 9/10/2005. INITIALLY I THOUGHT I HAD BAD GAS. MY 2003 SUZUKI SV1000S STARTED RUNNING POORLY AFTER I FILLED UP THE GAS TANK ON 9/10/2005. INITIALLY I THOUGHT I HAD BAD GAS. I TOOK THE BIKE TO THE DEALER AND THEY CHECKED IT AND FOUND THERE IS A CRACK IN THE TANK. THE DEALER SAID THE CRACK IS NEAR THE FUEL VAPOR SEPARATOR. THIS PART IS ONLY INSTALLED ON E-33 (CALIFORNIA MODEL) GAS TANKS FOR EMISSIONS PURPOSES. THAT CRACK CAUSED FUEL TO LEAK INTO THE CARBON CANISTER WHICH IS ONLY FOR FUEL VAPOR. THE DEALERSHIP HAS REPLACED THE TANK, AND CARBON CANISTER UNDER WARRANTY. I AM NOT THE ONLY SV1000S OWNER LIVING IN CA THAT HAS THIS PROBLEM. SEVERAL MEMBERS FROM A FORUM I AM A MEMBER OF (HTTP://WWW.SV1000.ZYNS.COM/INDEX.PHP?) ARE HAVING THE SAME ISSUES. I FOUND A PREVIOUS COMPLAINT FROM ANOTHER OWNER AND THAT IS WHY I AM WRITING THIS COMPLAINT UP. I BELIEVE SUZUKI WILL REPLACE THE TANKS BUT ONLY ON A CASE BY CASE BASIS. *NM

06V013000 · Fuel System, Gasoline:storage:tank Assembly

ON CERTAIN CALIFORNIA-SPECIFICATION MODEL MOTORCYCLES, REPEATED STRESS FROM VIBRATION CAN CAUSE A CRACK TO FORM IN THE AREA WHERE THE LIQUID/VAPOR SEPARATOR BRACKET IS WELDED INSIDE THE FUEL TANK. THIS CAN ALLOW FUEL LEAKAGE TO OCCUR.

Consequence & remedy

Consequence: FUEL LEAKAGE IN THE PRESENCE OF AN IGNITION SOURCE CAN RESULT IN A FIRE.

Remedy: DEALERS WILL REPLACE THE FUEL TANK FREE OF CHARGE. THE RECALL BEGAN ON FEBRUARY 3, 2006. CUSTOMERS MAY CONTACT AMERICAN SUZUKI AT 714-572-1490.

THIS PE WAS OPENED ON THE BASIS OF 5 OWNER STALLING ALLEGATIONS COMMONLY INVOLVING A MAIN HARNESS CONNECTOR AT THE IGNITION SWITCH.CURRENTLY ODI IS AWARE OF 7 INCIDENTS (TWO IN 2004, FOUR IN 2005, AND ONE IN FEB 2006) WHERE THE MOTORCYCLE STALLED.THE SINGLE INJURY CRASH OCCURRED ON SEPTEMBER 13, 2004.AFTER GATHERING INFORMATION CONCERNING THIS ISSUE FROM SUBJECT VEHICLE OWNERS, SUZUKI DEALERS, AND AMERICAN SUZUKI MOTOR CORPORATION, WE FIND NO DEFECT TREND CURRENTLY EXISTS CONCERNING THIS SUBJECT.WE WILL CONTINUE TO MONITOR THIS MATTER CLOSELY.THE CLOSING OF THIS INVESTIGATION DOES NOT CONSTITUTE A FINDING BY NHTSA THAT NO SAFETY-RELATED DEFECT EXISTS.THE AGENCY RESERVES THE RIGHT TO TAKE FURTHER ACTIO IF WARRANTED BY THE CIRCUMSTANCES.
