I PURCHASED THE SCION XB 2008 NEW AND HAVE HAD ALL OIL CHANGES AND RECOMMENDED SERVICE PERFORMED TIMELY. AT APPROX. 45,000 MILES (BUT AFTER THE 5 YEAR WARRANTY HAD EXPIRED, (I AM A LOW MILEAGE DRIVER) I NOTICED THAT IT HAD CONSUMED TWO QUARTS OF OIL WITHIN AROUND 1500 MILES AFTER THE OIL CHANGE (RECOMMENDED TO PERFORM EVERY 5000 MILES). I HAD AN OIL CHANGE AND TOOK A ROAD TRIP SO THAT I PUT MORE THAN A 1000 MILES ON IT IN ABOUT 10 DAYS, AND WHEN I WAS ON A STEEP INCLINE THE CHECK OIL LIGHT CAME ON. MY MECHANIC SAID IT WAS POSSIBLE THAT THE OIL HAD NOT BEEN FILLED PROPERLY AFTER THE CHANGE AND TOPPED IT OFF. IT WAS LOW AGAIN WHEN I HAD IT CHANGED AT THE 51,000 MARK; AFTER ABOUT 1,500 MILES IT NEEDED TWO QUARTS OF OIL WHICH WAS ADDED. AFTER ANOTHER 1,500 OR SO MILES IT NEEDED ANOTHER TWO QUARTS OF OIL, WHICH I ADDED. I CONTACTED TOYOTA, AND WITHOUT RECITING THE INITIAL RUNAROUND, THEY SET UP AN OIL CONSUMPTION TEST AFTER CONFIRMING IT WAS NOT LEAKING OIL. THE OIL CONSUMPTION TEST IS NOT COMPLETED - IT MAY NOT BE A TRUE REFLECTION OF OIL USAGE AS IT SEEMS TO BE WORSE WHEN DRIVEN A LONG DISTANCE AT ONE TIME WHICH WILL PROBABLY NOT HAPPEN DURING THIS 1,000 MILE CYCLE. I THEN GOT A NOTICE IN THE MAIL THAT THEY HAD A PROGRAM TO REIMBURSE OWNERS FOR THE PARTS (NOT THE LABOR) IF THEY BELIEVED THE VEHICLE MET CERTAIN (UNSPECIFIED) CRITERIA AFTER THE OWNERS HAD THE REPAIRS DONE FOR THE DEFECT WHICH, APPARENTLY, THEY ALREADY KNOW SPECIFICALLY EXISTS AND HOW TO FIX IT. 1. INCIDENT THE DRIVER WAS DRIVING THE 2008 SCION XB ALONE ON EAST-BOUND I-80, APPROACHING CARQUINEZ BRIDGE, VALLEJO, WHEN THE VEHICLE STOPPED WORKING. THE DRIVING SPEED WAS ABOUT 70 MPH. TIME OF THE INCIDENT WAS AROUND 12:45 A.M. ON DECEMBER 25, 2014. HE WAS DRIVING ON THE 1ST LANE, AND TO THE BEST OF HIS KNOWLEDGE, THERE WAS ONLY ONE COMPACT CAR PASSING NEARBY, WHEN THE CAR STOPPED ALL OF A SUDDEN . HE TRIED TO REACH OUT FOR A TOW TRUCK WITHOUT SUCCESS, BUT LATER ON HE REMEMBERED HE WAS AN ASSOCIATE MEMBER OF A CLASSIC MEMBERSHIP CARD REGISTERED IN THE NAME OF HIS MOTHER. BUT HE DID NOT HAVE THE CARD ON HIM AT THAT TIME, BUT GAVE HIS NAME TO AAA TO PROVE HE IS AN ASSOCIATE MEMBER. FINALLY, THE AAA TOW TRUCK ARRIVED ON THE SCENE AROUND 1:45 A.M. HE TOWED IT TO HOME, AND DAYS LATER HAD IT TOWED TO A MECHANIC SHOP, EAST BAY AUTO LOCATED ON NORTH TEXAS STREET. THE MECHANIC DIAGNOSED THE PROBLEM AND SAID THE ENGINE GOT BROKEN AND THE CAR NEEDED REPLACEMENT OF THE ENGINE. 2. SCION SIDE ON FEB. 10, 2015, THE OWNER OF THE VEHICLE RECEIVED A LETTER OF WARRANTY ENHANCEMENT NOTIFICATION FROM SCION. THE OWNER DID NOT TAKE AN INITIATIVE TO CALL SCION BEFORE RECEIVING THIS NOTIFICATION. THE NEXT DAY, THE VEHICLE OWNER CALLED SCION AND FILED A CLAIM FOR ENGINE FAILURE DUE TO EXCESSIVE ENGINE OIL CONSUMPTION. CASE #[XXX]. Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing (Toyota) is recalling certain 2010-2016 4Runner, 2003-2006 Tundra, 2003-2013 Corolla, 2009-2010 Corolla Matrix, 2004-2005 RAV4, 2002-2007 Sequoia, 2011-2013 Sienna, 2008-2012 Scion xB, 2008-2009 Lexus IS-F, 2007-2012 Yaris and Lexus ES350, 2010-2017 Lexus GX460, 2002-2010 Lexus SC430, 2006-2012 Lexus IS250 and IS350 and 2010-2015 Lexus IS250C and IS350C vehicles. These vehicles had their driver or passenger frontal air bag inflators previously replaced under a prior recall using inflators of the same design. The inflators may explode due to propellant degradation occurring after long-term exposure to high absolute humidity, temperature and temperature cycling.

Consequence & remedy

Consequence: An inflator explosion may result in sharp metal fragments striking the driver or other occupants resulting in serious injury or death.

Remedy: Toyota will notify owners. Depending on the vehicle model, dealers will replace the front driver inflator, front passenger airbag inflator, the airbag assembly, or the front passenger airbag sub-assembly and inflator. The recall began November 20, 2019. Owners may contact Toyota customer service at 1-888-270-9371 or Lexus customer service at 1-800-255-3987. Toyota's numbers for this recall are J0A, J0B, and J0C. Lexus' numbers for this recall are JLI, JLJ, and JLK.

Toyota is recalling certain model year 2007-2009 Camry, Camry Hybrid, RAV4, Corolla, Corolla Matrix, Tundra, Sequoia, Highlander, Highlander Hybrid, Yaris, Scion xB, Scion xD and Pontiac Vibe vehicles. The power window master switch assemblies in some of these vehicles were built using a less precise process for lubricating the internal components of the switch assemblies. Irregularities in this lubrication process may cause the power window master switch assemblies to malfunction and overheat.

Consequence & remedy

Consequence: If the switch overheats, it may melt, possibly resulting in a fire.

Remedy: Toyota will notify its owners, and dealers will inspect the switch and apply a special grease that inhibits heat build up or replace any switch damaged by the defect, free of charge. Toyota owners that experience a problem with a switch should not attempt to make repairs, but should contact their Toyota dealer or the Toyota Customer Experience Center at 1-800-331-4331. General Motors will contact the Pontiac Vibe owners affected by this recall and GM dealers will inspect and repair switches as necessary. IT HAS BEEN DETERMINED THAT SHOULD THE PRIMARY HOOD LATCH BE RELEASED OR FAIL, THE PLASTIC UPPER RADIATOR GRILL GARNISH COULD RELEASE THE SECONDARY LATCH AND CAUSE THE HOOD TO OPEN.

From 2000 through 2017, Takata produced millions of air bag inflators using two types of phase-stabilized ammonium nitrate ("PSAN") propellant -- propellant 2004 and propellant 2004L. After prolonged exposure to high temperature cycles and humidity, inflators using propellant 2004 can degrade, causing the propellant to burn too quickly when ignited. The rapid burning can cause the inflator to rupture during deployment, potentially causing serious or even fatal injury to vehicle occupants.
