FAMILY WAS TRAVELING ON GOOD HIGHWAY AT 65 MPH AND RIGHT FRONT TIRE ON KEYSTONE RV FIFTH WHEEL CAMPER BLEW OUT AND SEVERED THE PROPANE COPPER TUBING THAT SUPPLIES FUEL TO THE COOK STOVE. FORTUNATELY I SAW THE TIRE BLOW AND STOPPED IMMEDIATELY. THE VENTING FUEL FROM THE PROPANE TANKS WAS SPRAYING IN THE WHEEL AREA WHICH COULD HAVE STARTED A FIRE AND BURNT UP THE CAMPER AND TOW VEHICLE/OCCUPANTS. UPON INSPECTION I DISCOVERED THERE WAS NO WHEEL WELL OVER THE TIRES AND THE PROPANE AND WATER LINES WERE DIRECTLY ABOVE THE WHEELS ONLY PROTECTED BY A THIN LAYER OF RIP STOP TARP AND FIBERGLASS INSULATION. ABOVE THAT IS ONLY WOOD WHICH AFTER THE TARP GETS DAMAGED BY ROAD DEBRIS DAMAGES THE TARP WILL CAUSE THE WOOD TO ROT AND DAMAGE THE CAMPER. I CONTACTED KEYSTONE AND WERE TOLD THAT THIS IS A WARRANTY ISSUE AND OR TIRE MANUFACTURE ISSUE. IT IS NOT A WARRANTY ISSUE, IT IS A DESIGN FLAW AND GRAVE SAFETY ISSUE. THEY ALSO STATED THAT THEY WOULD NOT PARTICIPATE IN REPAIRS. IF I HAD NOT NOTICED THE TIRE BLOW OUT THE REMAINING BEAD CONSTRUCTION WOULD HAVE LEFT THE RIM AND THE RIM WOULD HAVE BEEN RUNNING ON THE ROAD AND CAUSED SPARKS WHICH NO DOUBT WOULD HAVE RESULTED IN GRAVE CONSEQUENCES FOR MY FAMILY. *TR

Keystone RV Company (Keystone) is recalling various 2003-2018 Crossroads, Dutchmen, and Keystone recreational trailers equipped with Kidde Plastic-Handle or Push Button 'Pindicator' Fire Extinguishers. A list of the affected trailer models is available at: https://static.nhtsa.gov/odi/rcl/2017/RMISC-17V755-5127.pdf. These extinguishers may become clogged, preventing the extinguisher from discharging as expected or excessive force may be needed to activate the extinguisher. Additionally, in certain models, the nozzle may detach from the valve assembly with enough force that it could cause injury and also render the product inoperable. For a full list of the affected fire extinguisher models visit: https://static.nhtsa.gov/odi/rcl/2017/RMISC-17E062-5427.pdf

Consequence & remedy

Consequence: In the event of a fire, if the fire extinguisher does not function properly, it can increase the risk of injury.

Remedy: Keystone will notify owners and instruct them to contact Kidde for a replacement fire extinguisher, free of charge. The recall began on January 15, 2018. Owners may contact Keystone customer service at 1-574-535-2100, or Kidde customer service toll-free at 1-855-262-3540, or online at www.kidde.com and click on "Product Safety Recall" for more information.
