The vehicle slid and jumped, and the brakes made a grinding sound. No warning light was illuminated. The failure caused the vehicle to rear-end another vehicle in front. The air bags deployed. The contact experienced neck pain, and her husband suffered a burn mark from the air bag deployment. The contact's eleven-year-old son suffered neck pain and a seat belt burn, while her other child had no injuries seated in a car seat. Medical attention was received. A Police report was filed. The vehicle was towed to a salvage yard and declared a total loss by the insurance company. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The contact stated that prior to the crash, the vehicle had been taken to the dealer for the brake failure, and the dealer performed a brake inspection and passed the vehicle. The contact owned a 2025 Hyundai Palisade. The contact stated that while driving 25-30 MPH on a curvy road, the steering wheel suddenly locked up, and the vehicle failed to drive in the intended direction, drove down the street, into a yard, and the front end of the vehicle crashed into a tree. The brake pedal was depressed prior to the crash, but the vehicle failed to respond as intended. The air bags deployed during the crash. After the vehicle had crashed into the tree, a bystander yelled that the vehicle was on fire. The contact was able to exit the vehicle. The contact stated that the fire started under the hood, near the engine compartment. The vehicle made exploding sounds three times while the 4 ft. tall fire progressed towards the cabin of the vehicle. The contact stated that the entire vehicle burned with the exception of the rear exterior lights and the rear passenger's side tire. The fire was extinguished by the Fire Department, and a report was filed. A Police report was filed. There was no property damage. The contact was transported to the hospital by ambulance. The contact sustained chest pains, bruises on the chest cavity, several contusions and bruises, and difficulty breathing. The contact was undergoing breathing therapy. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed low speed and depressing the brake pedal, the front end of the vehicle started shuddering while driving over a pothole or a bump, and the ABS suddenly became inoperable. The contact stated that the failure had been recurring while driving and required the contact to release the brake pedal while the ABS was inoperable and to slam on the brakes to stop the vehicle. There was no warning light illuminated. The contact stated that he was an Uber driver, and the failure had nearly caused the vehicle to hit pedestrians at the airport. The vehicle was taken to the dealer on two occasions. The dealer confirmed that the failure was not related to the vehicle alignment and informed the contact that the failure could not be replicated. The contact shared a recording of the failure with the dealer. The contact stated that the failure had recurred on another occasion, causing the vehicle to drive over the sidewalk and onto the middle of the road. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 226, "Ejection Mitigation."
Consequence & remedy
Consequence: Improper side curtain air bag deployment increases the risk of injury during a crash.
Remedy: Dealers will install a protective film over the rear window and remove padding, as necessary free of charge. Interim notification letters, notifying owners of the safety risk, were mailed beginning March 13, 2026. Hyundai Motor America (Hyundai) is recalling certain 2025 Hyundai Palisade vehicles. An insufficient seal on the controller for the electric oil pump may allow moisture to accumulate in the printed circuit board, which can cause an electrical short and result in a fire.
Consequence & remedy
Consequence: A fire while parked or driving can increase the risk of injury.
Remedy: Owners are advised to park their vehicles outside and away from structures until the recall remedy is completed. Dealers will replace the electric oil pump controller, free of charge. NHTSA is opening this Audit Query (AQ) to investigate NU Car Rentals (NU Car) for compliance with the requirements of the National Traffic and Motor Vehicle Safety Act.The Safety Act requires that a rental company shall not rent a vehicle subject to a safety recall unless the recall remedy has been performed. 49 U.S.C. § 30120(i). NHTSA is in receipt of information that indicates NU Car rented at least two vehicles to consumers without having performed required recall repairs.
