I am reporting a serious safety issue involving a 2023 Hyundai Palisade with approximately 26,000 miles. While the vehicle is being driven, the ESC warning light illuminates and the vehicle can unexpectedly come to a stop, shift into Park, and shut down. The vehicle must then be restarted before it can be driven again. This condition has occurred while the vehicle is in operation and creates a significant safety concern because the vehicle can unexpectedly stop in the roadway. If this occurs in traffic or at highway speeds, there is a risk of a rear-end collision or other crash. The vehicle has been presented to/communicated about with an authorized Hyundai dealership, ALM Hyundai Florence in Florence, South Carolina, but the issue has not been resolved. I am also reporting the issue directly to Hyundai Motor America. I am requesting that NHTSA document and investigate this condition to determine whether other 2023 Hyundai Palisade vehicles have experienced similar ESC-related shutdown, stopping, or unintended shifting-to-Park events and whether a safety defect may exist.

I am reporting an unresolved safety issue involving the seat belt buckle recall on my 2023 Hyundai Palisade (NHTSA Recall 25V-607 / Hyundai Campaign 283). For several months, I have repeatedly contacted Hyundai Myrtle Beach attempting to have the recall repair completed. I do not have the exact dates of every telephone call, but there have been multiple attempts. I was repeatedly advised that the necessary replacement parts were unavailable. The situation is particularly concerning because the front passenger seat belt is now not functioning properly. This is no longer only a potential recall-related safety concern; there is currently a seating position in my vehicle where the seat belt cannot be relied upon to function properly. I transport my children in this vehicle and am concerned about their safety. After repeated unsuccessful attempts through the dealership, I escalated the matter to Hyundai Consumer Affairs. Consumer Affairs arranged an appointment several weeks in advance for September 1, 2026, at Hyundai Myrtle Beach. My Consumer Affairs representative confirmed that the recall repair would be performed at this appointment. I drove to the dealership for the scheduled appointment expecting the vehicle to be repaired. Upon arrival, I was informed that the dealership did not have the replacement seat belt parts and could not perform the repair. Despite repeated attempts through both the dealership and Hyundai Consumer Affairs, the recall remains unrepaired and the front passenger seat belt remains nonfunctional. I am concerned about Hyundai’s ability to provide this safety recall remedy, particularly when a seat belt has already malfunctioned, and whether other Palisade owners are experiencing similar delays. I am requesting that NHTSA review Hyundai’s handling and parts availability for this recall.

This is a safety issue because it involves seat belts. I have contacted the manufacturer for assistance but this has not resulted in resolution of this issue. The engine shuts off to accessory mode when the car is parked or idle for more than 1 minute or so, and the “engine auto” is turned off (light illuminated)— this is our observed correlation. To clarify, the engine auto is automatically turned on when the car starts— the engine will automatically turn off for a short period of time and restart on its own. When the “engine auto” button is illuminated, and this issue occurs, the engine does not restart on its own, the cluster lights illuminate, air conditioner stops and the car must be restarted (foot on brake and push engine start button) to resume driving. This can happen several times in one day and often takes place if the vehicle is parked or idle— while in highway traffic, at a traffic light or stop sign included. My safety and the safety of my children and other passengers is at risk each time this takes place. We have impeded the flow of traffic on several occasions. Just today, 8/30/26 the auto start light in the cluster blinked 7 or 8 times when the engine turned back on automatically— this time, the engine auto button was not pressed (light was off).

On June 27, 2026 I started the vehicle and every warning light came on and the gauge cluster started cycling through system failure warnings for most every component/system on the vehicle. The vehicle was barely drivable, with no power steering, no backup camera, no AC, inoperable gauges, no safety/driver aids, and hard shifting. It was taken to Bentley Hyundai in Huntsville the same day. The vehicle was diagnosed with a CANBUS failure and after weeks of troubleshooting they said it was a bad engine wiring harness. The new harness was installed under our extended factory warranty this week. I was informed today, August 29, 2026, that there are still electrical issues with the vehicle. I am concerned about the safety of this vehicle now due to the length of time it has been at the dealership, 60+ days, and continuing issues even after replacement of a major component of the electrical system.

I am writing to file a formal complaint XXX regarding a severe safety defect on my 2023 Hyundai Palisade. On XXX, in [XXX] while driving under normal operating conditions, the sunroof glass spontaneously exploded with a loud noise resembling a gunshot. There was no vehicle ahead of me, no overpass overhead, and absolutely no external object or road debris struck the vehicle. The glass shattered violently upward and outward, which is a clear physical indicator of a spontaneous thermal or pressure-induced failure caused by a manufacturing defect, rather than an impact. As you are aware, spontaneous sunroof shattering is a heavily documented issue across 2023 and 2024 Hyundai Palisade models. Numerous identical complaints have been filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), pointing to a known defect in the tempering or structural stress of the panoramic glass panels. I have attached photos and a video of it still making sounds in the photo, you can also tell it is bubbling upward. This vehicle is well within its 5-year/60,000-mile New Vehicle Limited Warranty period. This failure represents a severe, sudden compromise of passenger safety, and I expect Hyundai to honor its warranty obligations. I demand that Hyundai Motor America authorize a full replacement of the sunroof glass, a thorough cleaning of the headliner/cabin to remove microscopic glass shards, and a complimentary loaner vehicle while the repair is being completed. I look forward to your immediate response and prompt resolution to this safety matter. Sincerely, [XXX] and [XXX] [XXX] INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

PE24021 · Inadvertent Seat Belt Unlatch

Opened Aug 7, 2024 · Closed Dec 12, 2025

Status: closed (inferred from source dates) · Seat Belts

On August 7, 2024, the Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) opened PE24021 to investigate complaints alleging inadvertent unlatching of seat belts in model year (MY) 2020-2023 Hyundai Palisade vehicles manufactured by Hyundai Motor America. The complaints alleged that, without warning, the seat belts sometimes inadvertently unlatch, increasing the risk of injury due to full loss of seat belt protection in the event of a crash. As a result of information exchanged as part of the investigation, on April 3, 2025, Hyundai initiated a warranty extension policy for seat belt buckles on model year 2020-2025 Palisade vehicles in the U.S. and Canada.  Hyundai subsequently initiated a request for warranty parts returns to support further analysis by the buckle supplier, ZF Lifetec. The warranty extension (reference “Z06”) noted that certain 2020 – 2025 model year Palisade vehicles may experience abnormal seat belt buckle(s) operation.   Hyundai extended the warranty coverage for the seat belt buckle under this condition to 15 years/150,000 miles (whichever occurs first) from the date of original retail delivery or date of first use.  This action is valid for original and subsequent owners. On September 11, 2025, Hyundai filed recall 25V-607 for certain 2020-2025 Hyundai Palisade vehicles.  Hyundai explained in its recall filing that the subject vehicles are equipped with seat belt buckle assemblies in the front row and second row outer seating positions that may contain out-of-specification components manufactured by the supplier.  These components can cause interference within the latch channel, potentially increasing friction, particularly under cold ambient temperatures. Improperly produced seat belt buckles, combined with slow insertion of the seat belt tongue plate, may prevent the seat belt buckle from fully latching. The recall remedy is currently under development. In view of Hyundai’s recall action, ODI is closing this Preliminary Evaluation, but will continue to monitor the issue as a remedy is developed and implemented. ODI will take additional action if warranted by future circumstances. To review the reports cited in the Closing Resume ODI Report Identification Number document, go to NHTSA.gov.

On August 15, 2022, Hyundai Motor America (Hyundai) filed a safety recall (NHTSA Recall 22V-627) of 122,919 model year (MY) 2020-2021 Hyundai Palisade vehicles produced from April 10, 2019 to November 30, 2020. This recall addressed windshield wipers that may function intermittently or stop functioning when impeded by the accumulation of snow and/or ice at the bottom of the windshield. Intermittent or inoperative windshield wipers could reduce driver visibility while operating the vehicle in inclement weather, increasing the risk of a crash. On December 2, 2022, the Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) opened this Recall Query (RQ) after receiving 6 consumer complaints alleging windshield wiper failures while driving during wintry precipitation in MY 2021-2023 Hyundai Palisade vehicles (subject vehicles). These vehicles were excluded from Recall 22V-627. At the time of opening the RQ, the root cause and recall remedy were still unknown and under investigation. Thus, the RQ was opened to assess the scope and remedy of Recall 22V-627.In its February 10, 2023 response to ODI's information request on the RQ, Hyundai provided 17 customer complaints and 75 warranty claims related to the alleged defect in the subject vehicles. Hyundai stated that the wiper systems in the subject vehicles are equipped with a different wiper motor design than the earlier-built Palisade vehicles included in Recall 22V-627. Hyundai also stated it does not believe there is an unreasonable risk to motor vehicle safety in the wiper system in subject vehicles. On March 17, 2023, Hyundai filed a new safety recall (NHTSA Recall 23V-180) of 167,085 MY 2021-2023 Palisade vehicles produced from December 1, 2020 to November 22, 2022 when a design change was implemented. The design change, as well as the recall remedy (for both Recalls 22V-627 and 23V-180), is a redesigned driver-side wiper arm that allows for additional snow accumulation between the wiper arm and the cowl, thus reducing the load on the wiper motor and circuit breaker activation. In view of the recall action being taken by Hyundai, ODI is closing this RQ. The agency reserves the right to take additional action if warranted by future circumstances. The ODI complaints cited above can be viewed at NHTSA.gov under the following ODI identification numbers:11521365, 11517359, 11512295, 11509965, 11509253, 11508868, 11502146, 11501278, 11497343, 11494119, 11458548, 11450975, 11450045, 11449381, 11443330.
