SUMMARY Filing complaint under 49 U.S.C. § 30120 against Hyundai Motor America & Checkered Flag Hyundai for failure to remedy a seatbelt defect in reasonable time, misallocating parts, and refusing escalation. Seatbelts randomly unlatch while driving with my family, posing fatality risk in a collision. CHRONOLOGY • Dec 2025: Requested repair; dealer cited backorder. • Apr 2026: Opened Hyundai Corporate case due to delay. • Mid-June 2026: Corporate stated parts arrived at dealer. • July 3, 2026: Left car all day for appointment. At pickup, dealer stated parts were NOT in stock; no repair done. • July 13, 2026: Emailed Rep Nasim demanding supervisor escalation, timeline, and giving NHTSA notice. • July 22, 2026: - Nasim called stating parts arrived; agreed to hold parts at dealer. - Joy (Parts) confirmed parts in stock; agreed to label box with my name. - <1 Min Later: Crystal (Service) stated parts were NOT available, revealing 3 arrived but were given away. Stated Parts Mgr Brian would call back. Called Joy back; sent to unreachable voicemail. - Nasim refused supervisor escalation, claiming no way exists to escalate the recall issue itself, but offered to re-escalate parts. Refused compensation claiming car is "drivable" despite unlatching. Denied call logs. VIOLATIONS 1. Exceeded 8 months without remedy for restraint failure. 2. Verified parts in stock with Parts (Joy), contradicted <1 min later by Service (Crystal) stating parts were given away. 3. Rep Nasim refused supervisor escalation on recall handling, claiming no way exists to escalate recall issues. 4. Misclassified active unlatching failure as "drivable." REQUESTED NHTSA ACTION 1. ODI Investigation into recall parts handling & escalation refusals. 2. Direct Hyundai to execute immediate repairs AND provide financial compensation for 8+ months of hazard exposure.

On April 17, 2026, while driving my 2022 Hyundai Palisade with approximately 167,000 miles, the vehicle suddenly lost engine power and was unable to maintain normal driving speed. The sudden loss of propulsion created a safety risk because the vehicle could no longer operate normally in traffic. I was able to move the vehicle out of traffic, but it would not restart. I also observed white smoke coming from the engine compartment. The vehicle was towed to Matt Bowers Hyundai Slidell, an authorized Hyundai dealership, where it remains and is available for inspection upon request. The dealership has inspected the vehicle and advised that the engine needs to be replaced. The exact internal component that failed and the final cause of the engine failure remain under review by Hyundai. I do not recall any warning lamps or messages before the sudden failure. The timing of any prior symptoms is UNKNOWN. The vehicle had been maintained through authorized Hyundai dealerships. On December 29, 2025, a Hyundai dealership replaced the oil filter housing because of an oil leak and performed a synthetic oil and oil filter change. On March 11, 2026, approximately five weeks before the failure, the dealership performed another oil and oil-filter change and a multipoint inspection. I am reporting this incident because the sudden loss of engine power while driving, the inability to restart, and the smoke from the engine compartment created a serious safety concern. The vehicle remains disabled and available for further inspection.

I own a 2022 Hyundai Palisade SEL. On XXX, while driving at the intersection of [XXX] and [XXX] in [XXX], the engine abruptly lost power, causing a sudden loss of engine power while the vehicle was in motion. This is my family's primary vehicle, and my wife and children were in the car during this incident. On XXX, I brought the vehicle to Courtesy Hyundai in [XXX]. The dealer found essentially no oil in the engine despite my keeping up with scheduled oil changes. The dealer replaced the oil and performed a software update described on the repair order as "9C9 C ECU SW UPDATE EMISSIONS IMPRV 26-01-010H," and I was instructed to return after 1,000 miles for an oil-level recheck. At that recheck, the dealer's service assistant reported the oil was full. On XXX, before a planned family road trip, I returned the vehicle for another check. The service department found the engine was two quarts low — this was only 4,000 miles after the oil service on April 10, 2026. The dealer stated they requested an oil consumption test but that Hyundai denied the request. Per the dealer's instructions, I returned again after another 1,000 miles, and the engine was one quart low. I am filing this complaint because I believe the excessive oil consumption and the resulting loss of engine power represent a safety defect that has not been remedied. An engine that abruptly loses power while driving creates a serious hazard, including loss of power steering and reduced braking assist, and I am concerned for my family's safety while this condition remains unresolved. Several times now, the car's engine will shut off while driving at low speed. When it shuts off, there is a relatively loud electrical noise coming from the engine compartment, and the instrument panel has multiple lights and sounds. Randomly but frequently, my car would turn off when coming to a stop and with the auto shut off - but the full car would turn off and to move, I would need to press the ignition to turn back on and drive. This even occurred while accelerating onto a highway. I took this to the shop and after 6 months of back and forth and paying for fuel injectors they 'repaired' it. Now, my car felt heavy with the auto turn off but the vehicle stayed on. The next day, while trying to accelerate up a hill on a highway, the RPM would rev but the car would not shift and accelerate. Additionally, I am getting 'parking sensor error or blockage' but they lines and sensors are all working.

My Hyundai Palisade is subject to Recall 283 (NHTSA Recall 25V607000) involving the seat belt system. The affected seat belt has exhibited sticking and binding issues. On at least one occasion, the belt became so tangled and stuck that I had to use pliers to free it. Children regularly use this seating position. I have contacted my Hyundai dealership, Circle Hyundai in Shrewsbury N.J., approximately 4-5 times over the past several months seeking recall repairs. Each time I was advised that parts were unavailable and that the dealership was waiting for Hyundai to supply the recall remedy. I also submitted an online service inquiry and did not receive a response. I am concerned that a known safety defect exists, the seat belt is exhibiting operational problems, and no repair has been made available despite repeated requests for service. I am submitting this complaint due to both the seat belt malfunction and the ongoing inability to obtain the recall repair.

PE24021 · Inadvertent Seat Belt Unlatch

Opened Aug 7, 2024 · Closed Dec 12, 2025

Status: closed (inferred from source dates) · Seat Belts

On August 7, 2024, the Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) opened PE24021 to investigate complaints alleging inadvertent unlatching of seat belts in model year (MY) 2020-2023 Hyundai Palisade vehicles manufactured by Hyundai Motor America. The complaints alleged that, without warning, the seat belts sometimes inadvertently unlatch, increasing the risk of injury due to full loss of seat belt protection in the event of a crash. As a result of information exchanged as part of the investigation, on April 3, 2025, Hyundai initiated a warranty extension policy for seat belt buckles on model year 2020-2025 Palisade vehicles in the U.S. and Canada.  Hyundai subsequently initiated a request for warranty parts returns to support further analysis by the buckle supplier, ZF Lifetec. The warranty extension (reference “Z06”) noted that certain 2020 – 2025 model year Palisade vehicles may experience abnormal seat belt buckle(s) operation.   Hyundai extended the warranty coverage for the seat belt buckle under this condition to 15 years/150,000 miles (whichever occurs first) from the date of original retail delivery or date of first use.  This action is valid for original and subsequent owners. On September 11, 2025, Hyundai filed recall 25V-607 for certain 2020-2025 Hyundai Palisade vehicles.  Hyundai explained in its recall filing that the subject vehicles are equipped with seat belt buckle assemblies in the front row and second row outer seating positions that may contain out-of-specification components manufactured by the supplier.  These components can cause interference within the latch channel, potentially increasing friction, particularly under cold ambient temperatures. Improperly produced seat belt buckles, combined with slow insertion of the seat belt tongue plate, may prevent the seat belt buckle from fully latching. The recall remedy is currently under development. In view of Hyundai’s recall action, ODI is closing this Preliminary Evaluation, but will continue to monitor the issue as a remedy is developed and implemented. ODI will take additional action if warranted by future circumstances. To review the reports cited in the Closing Resume ODI Report Identification Number document, go to NHTSA.gov.

On August 15, 2022, Hyundai Motor America (Hyundai) filed a safety recall (NHTSA Recall 22V-627) of 122,919 model year (MY) 2020-2021 Hyundai Palisade vehicles produced from April 10, 2019 to November 30, 2020. This recall addressed windshield wipers that may function intermittently or stop functioning when impeded by the accumulation of snow and/or ice at the bottom of the windshield. Intermittent or inoperative windshield wipers could reduce driver visibility while operating the vehicle in inclement weather, increasing the risk of a crash. On December 2, 2022, the Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) opened this Recall Query (RQ) after receiving 6 consumer complaints alleging windshield wiper failures while driving during wintry precipitation in MY 2021-2023 Hyundai Palisade vehicles (subject vehicles). These vehicles were excluded from Recall 22V-627. At the time of opening the RQ, the root cause and recall remedy were still unknown and under investigation. Thus, the RQ was opened to assess the scope and remedy of Recall 22V-627.In its February 10, 2023 response to ODI's information request on the RQ, Hyundai provided 17 customer complaints and 75 warranty claims related to the alleged defect in the subject vehicles. Hyundai stated that the wiper systems in the subject vehicles are equipped with a different wiper motor design than the earlier-built Palisade vehicles included in Recall 22V-627. Hyundai also stated it does not believe there is an unreasonable risk to motor vehicle safety in the wiper system in subject vehicles. On March 17, 2023, Hyundai filed a new safety recall (NHTSA Recall 23V-180) of 167,085 MY 2021-2023 Palisade vehicles produced from December 1, 2020 to November 22, 2022 when a design change was implemented. The design change, as well as the recall remedy (for both Recalls 22V-627 and 23V-180), is a redesigned driver-side wiper arm that allows for additional snow accumulation between the wiper arm and the cowl, thus reducing the load on the wiper motor and circuit breaker activation. In view of the recall action being taken by Hyundai, ODI is closing this RQ. The agency reserves the right to take additional action if warranted by future circumstances. The ODI complaints cited above can be viewed at NHTSA.gov under the following ODI identification numbers:11521365, 11517359, 11512295, 11509965, 11509253, 11508868, 11502146, 11501278, 11497343, 11494119, 11458548, 11450975, 11450045, 11449381, 11443330.
