In my 2020 Palisade with automated third and second row seats, the third row automated seat button was accidentally pushed and started to close on my grandchild who was sitting in the third row. The seat did not detect that anyone was sitting in it and kept closing. Luckily I was able to hit the button to stop it. This same problem also happened in the automated second row seat with a grandchild in it. Another [XXX] old child pushed the button on the entry side of the captain’s seat and the seat did not detect that there was someone sitting in it and began to close on them. Once again we were lucky and was standing there and able to push the button to stop it. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

I am filing a formal safety complaint regarding my 2020 Hyundai Palisade due to severe and ongoing engine oil consumption that presents a safety risk, combined with an active federal airbag safety recall. For approximately one year, my vehicle has been consuming excessive engine oil. Approximately 1,500–2,000 miles after an oil change, the vehicle becomes dangerously low on oil. On January 19, 2026, at 171,650 miles, the dealership initiated Hyundai’s official oil consumption test. At intake, the engine oil level was so low that nothing was visible on the dipstick. The dealership confirmed no external oil leaks were present and began the manufacturer’s oil consumption protocol. After driving approximately 1,000 miles, I returned on February 2, 2026, at 172,657 miles. The inspection showed the engine was 2.6 quarts low. The dealership stated combustion chamber cleaning was needed; however, Hyundai denied the repair based solely on mileage and the vehicle being out of warranty. This level of oil consumption presents a serious safety concern. Driving with critically low oil can cause sudden engine failure, stalling, or loss of power while traveling at highway speeds. This could create a crash hazard without warning. Additionally, my vehicle is subject to NHTSA Recall #26V034000 (Recall #292 – Ejection Mitigation), involving potential failure of the side curtain airbags for third-row passengers to deploy properly in certain crash scenarios. The remedy is not yet available. The combination of excessive oil consumption and an unresolved federal safety recall raises significant concerns regarding the overall safety and reliability of this vehicle. I am requesting that NHTSA investigate the engine oil consumption issue in the 2020 Hyundai Palisade, as excessive oil burning may indicate a broader manufacturing defect affecting engine integrity and driver safety. JUST PURCHASED THIS VEHICLE YESTERDAY. TOOK IT FOR A TEST DRIVE TWO DAYS EARLIER AND NOTICED VERY STRONG INTERIOR ODOR, SUCH A CARPET CLEANER OR DISINFECTANT, WHICH WE ASSUMED WAS FROM DEALERSHIP TRYING TO CLEAN, BUT OTHER CARS WE TEST DROVE DID NOT HAVE THIS SMELL. BOTH MY US AND AND I CAME HOME THAT AFTERNOON WITH A STRONG HEADACHE THAT LASTED ALL NIGHT. WE ASSUMED IT WAS FROM STRESS AND CAR SHOPPING'S. WE STILL DECIDED TO PURCHASE THE CAR, ASSUMING IT WAS STILL JUST A DISINFECTANT AND WOULD GO AWAY. BROUGHT HOME, OPENED ALL DOORS AND WINDOWS AND BACK HATCH TO AIR OUT. SPRAYED WITH NATURAL AIR FRESHENER ALL OVER CARPETS AND FLOORS. AFTER ONE NIGHT OF SITTING CLOSED INSIDE THE GARAGE, OPENED UP THE DOORS TO FIND THE SMELL IS GETTING STRONGER AND MORE INTENSE. OPENED THE WINDOWS TO LET AIR OUT AND SPRAYED CARPETS AGAIN. TODAY, AN ARTICLE WAS RELEASED THAT THOUSANDS OF OTHER HYUNDAI PALISADE OWNERS ARE COMPLAINING OF THE SAME ISSUE, AND IS TIED TO THE HIGHER END MODELS AND NAPPA LEATHER SEAT, WHICH WE HAVE. WE NOW HAVE LEARNED THAT HYUNDAI HAS BEEN MADE AWARE OF THIS ISSUE AND ARE NOT RESPONDING. WE ARE SAD TO FIND OUT THAT OUR 1 DAY OLD CAR (TO US) HAS SUCH A WIDESPREAD PROBLEM THAT WE WERE NOT AWARE OF AND CANNOT STAND. WE ARE CONCERNED ABOUT THE MATERIALS AND PRODUCTS USED TO BUILD THIS HIGH END VEHICLE AND IT'S AFFECTS ON OUR HEALTH. I AM VERY SENSITIVE TO SMELL AMD HAVE COMPLAINED OF THIS AWFUL SCENT SINCE WE FIRST SAT IN THE CAR. NOW THAT WE KNOW THIS MAY NOT BE SOMETHING THAT WILL JUST AIR OUT AND MAY BE AN INHERENT PROBLEM DIRECTLY FROM HYUNDAI, WE WANT ACTION. THIS MAY BE THE REAL REASON WHY THE PREVIOUS OWNER TURNED IT IN. IT IS AWFUL AND I DON'T FEEL COMFORTABLE SITTING MYSELF OR MY FAMILY IN OUR NEWLY PURCHASED VEHICLE. WE FEEL HYUNDAI SHOULD REPLACE OR REPAIR THIS PROBLEM WITH A RECALL!

PE24021 · Inadvertent Seat Belt Unlatch

Opened Aug 7, 2024 · Closed Dec 12, 2025

Status: closed (inferred from source dates) · Seat Belts

On August 7, 2024, the Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) opened PE24021 to investigate complaints alleging inadvertent unlatching of seat belts in model year (MY) 2020-2023 Hyundai Palisade vehicles manufactured by Hyundai Motor America. The complaints alleged that, without warning, the seat belts sometimes inadvertently unlatch, increasing the risk of injury due to full loss of seat belt protection in the event of a crash. As a result of information exchanged as part of the investigation, on April 3, 2025, Hyundai initiated a warranty extension policy for seat belt buckles on model year 2020-2025 Palisade vehicles in the U.S. and Canada.  Hyundai subsequently initiated a request for warranty parts returns to support further analysis by the buckle supplier, ZF Lifetec. The warranty extension (reference “Z06”) noted that certain 2020 – 2025 model year Palisade vehicles may experience abnormal seat belt buckle(s) operation.   Hyundai extended the warranty coverage for the seat belt buckle under this condition to 15 years/150,000 miles (whichever occurs first) from the date of original retail delivery or date of first use.  This action is valid for original and subsequent owners. On September 11, 2025, Hyundai filed recall 25V-607 for certain 2020-2025 Hyundai Palisade vehicles.  Hyundai explained in its recall filing that the subject vehicles are equipped with seat belt buckle assemblies in the front row and second row outer seating positions that may contain out-of-specification components manufactured by the supplier.  These components can cause interference within the latch channel, potentially increasing friction, particularly under cold ambient temperatures. Improperly produced seat belt buckles, combined with slow insertion of the seat belt tongue plate, may prevent the seat belt buckle from fully latching. The recall remedy is currently under development. In view of Hyundai’s recall action, ODI is closing this Preliminary Evaluation, but will continue to monitor the issue as a remedy is developed and implemented. ODI will take additional action if warranted by future circumstances. To review the reports cited in the Closing Resume ODI Report Identification Number document, go to NHTSA.gov.
