I own a 2024 Honda Hybrid Sport CR-V. The automatic emergency brake will engage only after seatbelts have been engaged. If you have not engaged seatbelts and turn the engine off, the emergency brake will not turn on creating a roll away hazard. This happened to me. I jumped in my car, realized that I left something in the house, turned the vehicle off, and without realizing, left the vehicle in neutral. The vehicle rolled out of our garage and struck another car in the neighborhood resulting in at least six thousand dollars in damages. Fortunately, there were no injuries. This needs to be standard in vehicles that do not utilize ignition keys as I am sure I am not alone in that my protocol has long been to take the key out an ignition anytime I exit a vehicle and this is the first time I have owned a vehicle of this type. Our Honda Pilot will automatically place the vehicle in park if someone turns off the ignition, there is no reason for this or, at the very least, an auto emergency brake not to be an option in CR-V regardless of seatbelt actions. This should be a simple software fix.

I was driving back home from work where suddenly as I was driving the car started popping up a whole bunch of error messages saying power reduced go see your dealer, electric power steering assist problem go see your dealer, emissions system problem go see your dealer and much more. The care went into a limp mode where I couldn’t go faster than 30-40km/h if I recall correctly. This was very dangerous as I was on the highway and this was during winter. My drive to work in the morning there was no problem at all.

I was driving back Thorne to Illinois on the highway from Florida vacation. My car shut off and could not continue to accelerate, at this point I’m in Georgia on [XXX] . I pulled over to the shoulder my car would not start. I towed it to Honda and they didn’t find the issue because there were no codes coming up and let us go home. Car turned on next morning and we continued to drive home. Well before we got to Nashville Tennessee the car shut off on the Highway again. We towed it to Honda again in Tennessee this time. We had to catch a ride home because Honda said it was unsafe to drive the car and they kept it to repair it. They said Both fuel pumps were not working and that they were going to order those parts and replace them. And go from there. And now they have called me saying they have replaced the fuel pump but the car is still having the same issues and the engineers says to start replacing thing and to start with the PCM and go from there. Currently the car is still at Honda Tennessee and they’re awaiting to get the PCM delivered to replace it in the car. On and off, the steering briefly feels like "manual steering" (no power), then feels normal. The driver (me) has to be constantly vigilant and use extra effort to keep the car under control. It's worse a higher speeds and is not as bad at lower speeds. Safety is at risk when it's hard to control the direction of the car! The Honda dealer has test driven twice and has not been able to reproduce the problem. The brief on & off heavy steering is worse when the car has been driven for a while - 45 minutes to an hour. The dealer never tested that long. No warning lights or special dash lights showing.

Recently, I had a flat tire. Our 2024 CR-V Hybrid does not have a spare. The tire inflator/sealant did not repair the flat. We were two hours away from home on a Saturday afternoon, and no tire repair shops were open. We had the car towed to the nearest tire repair shop and left for the rest of the weekend since no repair places were open Sunday. Monday we drove two hours to get the car. The tire was able to be repaired. If the tire could be repaired why wasn't the sealant able to repair the tire? We live in Utah, and we were lucky to have been as close to a repair shop as we were. Without a spare tire and an inflator/sealant that is unable to repair the tire with a simple hole, this car is unsafe to drive.

It's becoming more of a problem and dealerships do not know how to correctly diagnosis it. I've taken my car to the dealership twice and still the problems occur. EA23003 · Momentary Increased Steering Effort
Opened Nov 29, 2023 · Closed Jan 28, 2025
Status: closed (inferred from source dates) · Steering
On November 29, 2023, the Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) opened this Engineering Analysis (EA23003) to assess allegations of momentary increase in steering effort in model years (MY) 2022-2023 Honda Civic, 2023MY Honda CR-V, and 2023MY Acura Integra vehicles (subject vehicles). The complaints received by ODI alleged that the subject vehicles experienced a momentary increase in required steering effort (described as “sticky steering”) occurring mostly at highway speeds after driving for an extended amount of time; these complaints could not be duplicated during dealer service technicians’ quick test drives. The complaints had been received over the previous two years with most occurring with low vehicle mileage. The steering gear of these vehicles is aided by an electrical power assist unit. This power assist unit inputs force on the steering rack via a worm gear and worm wheel assembly. During PE23005, Honda stated this condition of momentary increase in steering effort occurs due to two factors within this power assist unit. First, during manufacturing, the steering worm wheel goes through annealing and component conditioning processes. These processes cause internal stress and strain within the steering worm wheel. This strain is slowly released over the first few months of the vehicle life. Over time, the released strain causes deformation of the teeth on the worm wheel, causing the worm gear to catch on the worm wheel. This catching results in the driver’s momentary increased steering effort. Second, the manufacturing process did not guarantee consistent grease application and, therefore, some subject vehicles received insufficient grease which contributed to the momentary increase in steering effort. During EA23003, ODI further analyzed the potential safety related consequences of the momentary increase in steering effort. NHTSA’s Vehicle Research and Test Center (VRTC) duplicated the allegations of increased steering effort. In addition, VRTC discovered the steering worm wheel and worm gear tended to push grease out of the meshing area, resulting in large amounts of grease resting on top of the worm wheel. Information Request responses collected and reviewed by ODI showed Honda had also discovered this additional root cause during NHTSA’s EA. In addition, Honda discovered the preload of the worm wheel gear spring was set too high, increasing the gear slide load and resulting in higher friction and increased torque fluctuation when steering. The number of consumer complaints made to ODI continued to increase with the expansion of scope from the PE to the EA. Additionally, during EA23003, ODI received ten complaints alleging a crash, in addition to the 13 complaints ODI had received as of the time it opened EA23003. In total, 23 crashes have been reported to ODI due to this alleged defect. On October 3, 2024, Honda filed NHTSA Recall No. 24V-744 to address this defect. The recall will provide consumers with a new steering worm wheel gear spring with a decreased load. Additionally, dealerships will add additional grease and relocate any grease sitting on top of the worm wheel back into the meshing area. The scope of this recall includes all Honda vehicles that were manufactured with this specific improperly produced steering worm wheel and spring. In view of the recall action being taken by Honda, ODI is closing EA23003. NHTSA reserves the right to take additional action if warranted by future circumstances.
