The actual component or system is UNKNOWN. The vehicle is available for inspection. The safety issue is that the vehicle will drift into another lane even though both green lane indicators are illuminated posing a risk to myself and other drivers. The dealer mechanics stated that they could not verify or reproduce the problem. I reported the issue to Honda USA but they stated that they had no technical staff available that could provide information on the subject and that I would have to go back to the dealer. The dealer mechanics were unable to detect or resolve any problems with either system despite multiple attempts. Both the LKA and LDW error lights with instructions to "see dealer" had come on multiple times before the safety incidents. On a possibly related note, the Back Up Guidance System does not work on occasion and when that happens, the navigation system is very slow to come on. The navigation system comes on eventually after about 2 blocks of driving. I asked the dealership if they could check the software or perhaps any RAM memory that may exist as the problem seems to be related to a slow system response which would explain why the system checks out OK when analyzed by the dealer mechanics because the systems may seem to be working properly when the vehicle is parked but not working within their design parameters. They stated that there was no way to check the software or memory. The problem has occurred several times to date but I am only able to list one date on the form so I used 11/17/2023.

While diving on my first long trip in this vehicle, the steering seems to be hard or sticky when trying to keep the car in the middle of the road. I’m a smaller female and after long trips, it begins to be uncomfortable and I feel like I’m fighting to keep the vehicle in the middle of the road. I took the vehicle to the dealer and they evaluated the problem. They indicated that it was within specifications even without actually driving the vehicle as I had requested. The technician did say that the lane keeping system is causing the issue. It’s always on, so you are fighting it. The tech said Honda should have made it with an off position and that would have solved the issue. My concern is, during the end of a long road trip and being worn down, I may over or under compensate the and crash.

On or about October 18, 2023, while backing out of driveway, I heard a warning beep and a meesage popped up on the instument panel- Lane Keeping assist System malfunction, see your dealer. about that same time, my steering began to get a "sticky" feeling to it, as if the steering was hesitant to respond to slight movement of the steering wheel. This occurs after the vehicle has been on the road for 10 to 15 minutes. It will also stick whenever the vehicle is stopped for more than a few seconds (i.e, at a traffic light or stop sign). While driving on a highway in a straight line, the steering is also hesitant, as if momentarily "stuck". This will cause a "jerk" in the steering wheel. The problem has been persistent for a month now,and prio to this, the steering was very smooth and consistent for the first 9 months of operation. I bought this vehicle brand new from the dealer. I took it to the dealer I purchased it from, and they claimed they could not duplicate the problem. As soon as I departed the dealership, the problem was still there.

Steering becomes sticky while driving at any speed. The steering wheel freezes or locks making it harder to control. Added pressure to turn the wheel can cause the steering to unstick and jerk the vehicle suddenly. Th sticking does not occur immediately after the car has been parked for a long period of time (overnight) and only happens once the vehicle has warmed and has been driven for around 10-15 minutes after starting. In addition to the sticking, there is a noticeable clicking sound coming from the wheels when turning at low speeds. Currently awaiting feedback from dealership.

I am really going through a very rough patch after buying the Honda CRV in May end 2023 EX-L model , 23/HONDA/CR-V/ AWD EX-L : Warnings Concerns / VIN: [XXX] . Following up from the 3 -month , I purchased the vehicle , but no respite from Honda Dealer & Honda Company, even filed the case with American Honda : Case # [XXX] but they are not providing any solution and referring to Honda dealer and Honda dealer referring to Honda company and I m missed as no body is taking the responsibility. I am seeing an unwanted warning, when I unpark my car, and there is no resolution at the Honda dealer and Honda company itself. warnings which abruptly came when my new Honda CRV got unparked . Details as below "LKAS: lane keeping assist system problem. See your dealer.". "road departure mitigation system problem. See your dealer.", Please help me to reolve this issue, If we paid out what is the intended price, but we are not getting the benefits/comfort what is expected and causing us the multiple trips to Honda showroom and mental agony giving me sleepless nights, if I spend too much for a new vehicle, still getting these kind of discomfort and uneasiness. It seems that customers should be compensated for all these unnecessary troubles and unwanted warnings giving an illusion which makes the driver unformatable which can lead to accidents. EA23003 · Momentary Increased Steering Effort

Opened Nov 29, 2023 · Closed Jan 28, 2025

Status: closed (inferred from source dates) · Steering

On November 29, 2023, the Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) opened this Engineering Analysis (EA23003) to assess allegations of momentary increase in steering effort in model years (MY) 2022-2023 Honda Civic, 2023MY Honda CR-V, and 2023MY Acura Integra vehicles (subject vehicles). The complaints received by ODI alleged that the subject vehicles experienced a momentary increase in required steering effort (described as “sticky steering”) occurring mostly at highway speeds after driving for an extended amount of time; these complaints could not be duplicated during dealer service technicians’ quick test drives.  The complaints had been received over the previous two years with most occurring with low vehicle mileage. The steering gear of these vehicles is aided by an electrical power assist unit. This power assist unit inputs force on the steering rack via a worm gear and worm wheel assembly. During PE23005, Honda stated this condition of momentary increase in steering effort occurs due to two factors within this power assist unit. First, during manufacturing, the steering worm wheel goes through annealing and component conditioning processes. These processes cause internal stress and strain within the steering worm  wheel. This strain is slowly released over the first few months of the vehicle life. Over time, the released strain causes deformation of the teeth on the worm wheel, causing the worm gear to catch on the worm wheel. This catching results in the driver’s momentary increased steering effort. Second, the manufacturing process did not guarantee consistent grease application and, therefore, some subject vehicles received insufficient grease which contributed to the momentary increase in steering effort. During EA23003, ODI further analyzed the potential safety related consequences of the momentary increase in steering effort. NHTSA’s Vehicle Research and Test Center (VRTC) duplicated the allegations of increased steering effort. In addition, VRTC discovered the steering worm wheel and worm gear tended to push grease out of the meshing area, resulting in large amounts of grease resting on top of the worm wheel. Information Request responses collected and reviewed by ODI showed Honda had also discovered this additional root cause during NHTSA’s EA. In addition, Honda discovered the preload of the worm wheel gear spring was set too high, increasing the gear slide load and resulting in higher friction and increased torque fluctuation when steering. The number of consumer complaints made to ODI continued to increase with the expansion of scope from the PE to the EA. Additionally, during EA23003, ODI received ten complaints alleging a crash, in addition to the 13 complaints ODI had received as of the time it opened EA23003. In total, 23 crashes have been reported to ODI due to this alleged defect. On October 3, 2024, Honda filed NHTSA Recall No. 24V-744 to address this defect. The recall will provide consumers with a new steering worm wheel gear spring with a decreased load. Additionally, dealerships will add additional grease and relocate any grease sitting on top of the worm wheel back into the meshing area. The scope of this recall includes all Honda vehicles that were manufactured with this specific improperly produced steering worm wheel and spring. In view of the recall action being taken by Honda, ODI is closing EA23003. NHTSA reserves the right to take additional action if warranted by future circumstances. To review the ODI reports cited in the Closing Resume ODI Report Identification Number document, go to NHTSA.gov.
