MY MOM OWNS A 2006 FORD FREESTYLE. IT HAD A THROTTLE BODY FAILURE THAT COST HER $835 TO REPLACE ON 7-21-2011. THIS IS OUTRAGEOUS!!!! IT'S UNDERSTANDABLE THAT MECHANICAL THINGS WILL FAIL BUT THIS IS AN OBVIOUS SAFETY ISSUE. THE CAR BEGAN TO "SURGE" AND LURCH FORWARD, MAINLY WHEN PARKING. MY MOM ACTUALLY BUMPED THE FRONT OF THE CAR PORT!!! THE VEHICLE ALSO DIED MULTIPLE TIMES WHILE SITTING AT RED LIGHTS OVER THE COURSE OF ABOUT 3 WEEKS... WHEN SHE NEEDED TO TAKE OFF, IT STALLED AND WOULD NOT ACCELERATE... THIS IS AN EXTREME SAFETY HAZARD AND FORD NEEDS TO MAKE THIS RIGHT! REIMBURSE MY MOM! SHE'S ON A FIXED INCOME AND CAN'T AFFORD TO PAY FOR FORD'S MISTAKES, NOT TO MENTION SHE COULD HAVE HAD AN ACCIDENT CAUSING DAMAGE TO HER VEHICLE OR SOMEONE ELSE, OR WORSE YET PERSONAL INJURY TO HER OR SOMEONE ELSE!!!!!! DO THE RIGHT THING... STEP UP AN RECALL THIS THROTTLE BODY... THERE IS ALREADY A TSB OUT ON IT.. (05-25-13) SO IT'S A KNOWN ISSUE. WHAT WILL IT TAKE TO GET THIS FIXED?... DOES SOMEONE HAVE TO GET HURT OR KILLED???? *TR

CAR ACCELERATED UNEXPECTEDLY, TO THE POINT OF HAVING TO HOLD THE BRAKE WHILE THE TIRES WERE STILL SPINNING IN THE GRAVEL. AFTER THIS THE DASHBOARD WRENCH AND CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON. CAR ALSO STOPPED WHILE IN TRAFFIC SEVERAL TIMES. AFTER TAKING CAR TO FORD DEALERSHIP FOR SERVICE, WE WERE TOLD THE THROTTLE BODY WAS MALFUNCTIONING AND CAUSED THIS PROBLEM. WHILE THE CAR IS STILL UNDER WARRANTY WE WERE ADVISED THIS PART WAS NOT COVERED UNDER THE WARRANTY AT A COST OF $700.00 TO US. WE HAVE NO PROBLEM WITH THE DEALERSHIP, OUR PROBLEM IS WITH FORD MOTOR COMPANY. WHY IS THERE NO RECALL!! THIS IS A DANGEROUS SITUATION.

WHEN I RUN MY A/C IN MY 2006 FORD FREESTYLE AND WILL BE TRYING TO BACK UP MY CAR WILL SHUT OFF AND MY CHECK ENGINE LIGHT WILL COME ON. TODAY WHILE DRIVING FORWARD MY CAR SPUTTERED AND THE ORANGE WRENCH LIGHT CAME ON. ONCE I STOPPED I TURNED OFF THE CAR AND IT TURNED BACK ON AND THE LIGHTS STAYED OFF. I DROVE HOME WITHOUT ANY PROBLEMS BUT I WAS NOT USING THE A/C. I ONLY NOTICE IT WHEN I DRIVE WITH THE A/C ON WHICH IT IS SUMMER SO IT HAS BEEN HAPPENING QUITE FREQUENTLY. SOMETIMES WHEN I AM DRIVING THROUGH TOWN WITH STOP LIGHTS IT WILL LURCH FORWARD AND I AM AFRAID I AM GOING TO HIT THE CAR IN FRONT OF ME OR EVEN SOMEONE WALKING IN FRONT OF ME. I TOOK THE CAR TO WALMART WITH THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT ON BEFORE WHILE GETTING MY OIL CHANGED AND THEY RECOMMENDED ME TO USE FUEL INJECTION CLEANER AND IT SEEMS TO MAKE THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT GO OFF BUT DOES NOT HELP MY BACKING UP AND SHUTTING OFF PROBLEM OR MY GOING FORWARD AND THE CAR LURCHING. I AM AFRAID THAT DRIVING WITH 4 CHILDREN UNDER THE AGE OF 10 THAT SOMETHING WILL HAPPEN WITH THEM IN THE CAR. *TR

PUT TRANSMISSION INTO'D' TO PULL BACK INTO SPACE AND TRANSMISSION DASH INDICATOR ILLUMINATED AND THE CAR DIED. VARIOUS ITERATIONS OF RESTARTING THE ENGINE, PUTTING THE CAR IN GEAR AND THEN EITHER SURGING UNDER FULL POWER OR DYING UNTIL WE GOT TO AN AUTO PARTS STORE TO SEE IF THEY COULD READ ANY CODES FOR THE PROBLEM. THE SHOP WAS VERY NICE BUT UNABLE TO DETERMINE ANYTHING CONCLUSIVE SO WE LIMPED ALONG TO THE NEAREST FORD DEALERSHIP WHERE WE LEARNED THE THROTTLEBODY HAD FAILED. *TR

I HAVE A 2006 FORD FREESTYLE I PULLED OFF THE INTERSTATE STOPPED AT A STOP SIGN WHEN I WENT TO PULL AWAY THE CAR LUNGED FORWARD ALMOST HITTING ANOTHER CAR AND DIED 3 TIMES THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON. I WENT TO PULL BACK ON THE INTERSTATE AND HAD NO POWER HAD MY FOOT TO THE FLOOR AND COULD BARELY GET TO 30 MPH. I AM AN AUTOMOTIVE TECH TOOK THE CAR TO WORK AND PULLED THE CODES PO61B INTERNAL CONTROL TORQUE CALCULATION AND P2106 THROTTLE CONTROL SYSTEM. AFTER RESEARCHING THE CODES I FOUND THAT ALOT OF PEOPLE HAVE EXPERIENCED THE SAME PROBLEM WITH THE SAME CODES AND HAD TO REPLACE THE THROTTLE BODY. I AM REPLACING THE THROTTLE BODY BUT REALIZE THIS IS A COMMON AND DANGEROUS PROBLEM THAT FORD IS NOT TAKING CARE OF OR EVEN ACKNOWLEDGING THERE IS A PROBLEM. KNOWING THAT THE THROTTLE BODIES WERE ON BACK ORDER NOT LONG AGO MEANS TO ME THEY ARE IN BIG DEMAND SO THERE MUST BE A PROBLEM. *TR

PE11018 · Idle Instability

Opened May 11, 2011 · Closed Feb 7, 2013

Status: closed (inferred from source dates) · Vehicle Speed Control

On November 29, 2012, Ford Motor Company (Ford) initiated Customer Satisfaction Program 12N03 to extend warranty coverage terms for repair of engine idle RPM surge caused by throttle body deposits in all model year (MY) 2005 through 2007 Ford Freestyle, Five Hundred and Mercury Montego vehicles. The program extends the coverage for up to 10 years of service or 150,000 miles from the warranty start date of the vehicle (all vehicles are eligible for the program through May 31, 2013, regardless of mileage).Dealers will repair vehicles exhibiting the condition by removing and cleaning the throttle body and reprogramming the PCM with software containing an updated idle speed control strategy.According to Ford, some of the affected vehicles may experience momentary, intermittent engine idle RPM surge (idle flare) when stopped or during low speed driving maneuvers such as in a parking lot or driveway.Unstable idle speed control (dips and flares) around the target engine speed (700 rpm) can occur in vehicles with deposit build-up in the throttle body when the system adjusts engine speed in response to changes in engine load, typically from power steering application or air-conditioner compressor cycling.Idle speed control logic is only active at vehicle speeds below 3.5 mph and when the accelerator pedal is not applied.Ford testing of a vehicle with a worst case throttle body measured a maximum idle flare of 1360 RPM lasting approximately 1 second, which Ford indicated was consistent with system design to limit vehicle speed and acceleration in idle control mode.Ford indicated that the test vehicle was held in place with normal brake effort and that vehicle speed remained under 4 mph without the brake pedal applied. In addition to throttle body deposit accumulation, symptoms associated with the condition may include Check Engine lamp illumination and diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) P0505, P0506 or P061B.Ford attributed the surge condition to changes in idle air flow resulting from the progressive buildup of deposits in the throttle body from normal Positive Crankcase Ventilation (PCV) system operation. This condition was not adequately compensated for in the original Powertrain Control Module (PCM) calibration.Ford issued a technical service bulletin on August 15, 2011 (TSB 11-8-5), releasing an updated powertrain control calibration for vehicles with CVT transmissions. On October 19, 2011, Ford issued a second bulletin (TSB 11-10-21) superseding TSB 11-8-5 and including updated powertrain control calibration for vehicles with 6-speed transmissions.Prior to Ford issuing the TSB?s, owner?s experiencing the alleged defect either received no repairs, if dealers could not duplicate the condition, or had the throttle body cleaned or replaced, which only provided temporary correction until the throttle deposit build-up returned.Ford?s revised powertrain calibrations appear to be effective remedies for the idle instability caused by build-up of throttle body deposits. However, even after the TSB?s were released, many owners experiencing the condition continued to have difficulty with proper diagnosis and repair as dealers were often either unable to duplicate the condition or were unfamiliar with the new repair procedures.Ford's new program addresses those concerns.NHTSA's testing and complaint analysis indicate that the idle speed control issue in the subject vehicles can only occur at very low speeds, are very brief events, are easily controlled by moderate brake pedal forces and result in minor increases in vehicle speed even with no braking. This investigation is closed. The closing of this in
