MY 06 EXPLORER HAS BEEN LURCHING EXTREMELY HARD FROM 1ST TO 2ND AND VICE VERSA. IT'S TO THE POINT THAT WHEN STOPPING, I AM COMING LITERALLY WITHIN AN INCH OF HITTING ANOTHER CAR. THE SUV STOPS AND THEN LURCHES FORWARD. I AM SERIOUSLY CONCERNED ABOUT THE SAFETY OF MY FAMILY AND THE SAFETY OF OTHERS WHILE DRIVING MY SUV. THE WEBSITE CARCOMPLAINTS.COM SHOWS THERE ARE 73 OTHER COMPLAINTS ABOUT THE SAME EXACT PROBLEM WITH THE 2006 EXPLORER MODELS. FORD IS NOT TAKING ANY PROCEDURES INTO GETTING THE VEHICLES RECALLED. I DON'T FEEL SAFE DRIVING MY TRUCK; I DON'T UNDERSTAND WHY THERE ISN'T A RECALL. THE TRUCKS ARE STILL CONSIDERED VERY NEW AND YET THEY ARE LURCHING AND HAVING A HUGE TRANSMISSION PROBLEM. WHEN I TOOK MY TRUCK TO THE FORD DEALER, THEY TOLD ME THERE IS NO PROBLEM, EVERYTHING IS WAS FINE! SOMETHING HAS GOT TO BE DONE TO GET THESE TRUCKS OFF THE ROAD. WE ARE DRIVING HAZARDS JUST WAITING TO CAUSE AN ACCIDENT!! I FEEL THAT IT WILL TAKE ANOTHER INCIDENT (LIKE THE FIRESTONE TIRE ONE) BEFORE FORD WILL COME OUT AND DO SOMETHING!!! MY TRUCK IS JOLTING WORSE THAN EVER AND I AM SERIOUSLY CONCERNED. *TR

I OWN A 1995 FORD EXPLORER 4X4. I PURCHASED IT NEW AND DID NOT HAVE ANY PROBLEMS WITH THE TRANSMISSION UNTIL LAST YEAR WHEN I HAD IT FLUSHED. I STARTED TO WORK THE NEXT MORNING AND THE TRANSMISSION BEGAN TO SLIP COMING OUT OF FIRST GEAR. I TOOK IT INTO AAMCO AND THEY TOLD ME THE TRANSMISSION NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THEY ALSO INFORMED ME THE ENGINE WAS STRONG, BUT THE TRANSMISSION WOULD HAVE TO BE REPLACED. I HAVE NO PROBLEM AFTER IT GETS TO SECOND AND THIRD GEAR. IT IS REALLY UNSAFE TRYING TO MERGED INTO TRAFFIC, BECAUSE OF THE HESITATION TRYING TO GET OUT OF FIRST. IF FORD KNOWS THIS IS A MAJOR PROBLEM WITH THIS YEAR VEHICLE, THEY SHOULD AT LEAST AGREE TO RECALL THESE TRANSMISSIONS. I AM SURE MOST PEOPLE HAVE JUNKED THERE TRUCKS BY NAME, BUT I AM STILL HANGING IN STRONG 237,000 MILES AND COUNTING, WITH THE SAME SLIPPING TRANSMISSION. IF ANYONE KNOWS A SOLUTION TO THIS ISSUE, PLEASE LET THE REST OF US KNOW HOW TO RECTIFY OUR PROBLEMS WITH THE 1995 FORD EXPLORER TRANSMISSION. *TR

MY WIFE'S 2002 FORD EXPLORER HAD A WHINE IN THE REAR END SINCE IT WAS NEW AND IT CONTINUED TO GET WORSE WITH TIME. AT ABOUT 55K MILES IT WAS SO BAD THAT WE HAD TO HAVE THE ENTIRE DIFFERENTIAL REBUILT AT A COST OF OVER $1,000. AT 65K MILES THE ENGINE HAD BEGUN TO MAKE NOISE AND IT BECAME MUCH LOUDER RAPIDLY. THE ENTIRE CAM DRIVE (TIMING CHAIN, SPROCKETS, TENSIONERS) HAD BEEN GROUND UP. THE TENSIONER PADS HAD 3/8" DEEP GROOVES WORN INTO THEM AND THERE WERE METAL SHAVINGS EVERYWHERE. THE BILL THIS TIME WAS ALMOST $1,300. IT IS INTERESTING THAT ALL THE PARTS THAT WERE REPLACED WERE A DIFFERENT DESIGN THAN THE ORIGINALS. IF THERE WAS NOTHING WRONG WITH THE ORIGINAL DESIGN, WHY SPEND THE MONEY TO CHANGE THEM? OF COURSE FORD WOULD NOT ADMIT THAT THEY HAD A PROBLEM WITH THE TIMING CHAIN FOR THE CAMS. AFTER THE TIMING CHAIN WAS FIXED THERE WAS STILL A NOISE SO WE TOOK IT BACK TO THE SHOP THAT DID THE WORK. WITH A STETHOSCOPE THE NOISE WAS ISOLATED TO THE BELLHOUSING/TORQUE CONVERTER AREA. WE TOOK IT TO A TRANSMISSION SHOP WE TRUST AND HE THOUGHT IT WAS A CRACKED FLEX PLATE BECAUSE THAT HAPPENS FREQUENTLY ON THESE VEHICLES AND IT CAUSES THAT KIND OF NOISE. THE FLEX PLATE WAS FINE AS WAS THE FRONT PUMP ON THE TRANSMISSION AND THE STARTER DRIVE. THE ONLY THING LEFT IN THAT AREA WAS THE TORQUE CONVERTER SO WE REPLACED THAT. THE NOISE WAS STILL THERE. HE SAID THAT THE NOISE HAD TO BE COMING FROM THE TRANSMISSION AND THAT WOULD BE A $2,000 REPAIR. I'VE HAD IT WITH FORD AND THEIR "QUALITY IS JOB ONE" OR WHATEVER THEIR CURRENT ADVERTISING LIE IS. THIS CAR IS A LEMON AND THEY WON'T ADMIT TO A SINGLE THING BEING WRONG WITH IT. EVERY DRIVELINE COMPONENT HAS HAD TO BE FIXED AND IT ONLY HAS 67K MILES ON IT. FORD SHOULD BE ASHAMED OF THE WAY THEY HANG THEIR CUSTOMERS OUT TO DRY. EVEN THOUGH I HAD TO IDENTIFY A PARTICULAR DATE BELOW, THIS CAR HAS HAD MAJOR PROBLEMS SINCE IT WAS NEW IN 2002. *TR

OUTSTANDING RE-BUILD AND THAT IS WHEN I FOUND OUT THAT I NEVER HAD A LOW(EST) GEAR BUT DID AFTER THE TRANSMISSION WAS REBUILT. FAITHFUL CHANGE AND CLEANING OF TRANS FLUID, NO TOWING EVER, AND EXCELLENT MAINTENANCE RECORD DID NOT PREVENT A TRANSMISSION FAILURE WHICH IS EVIDENCE OF FORD POOR QUALITY CONTROL AT THE MANUFACTURING OR ASSEMBLY LEVEL. OBVIOUSLY NO ONE EVER PICKED UP THE FACT THAT THE LOW GEAR NEVER WORKED, NOT AT THE FORD FACTORY, AT THE DEALERSHIP, BY SALES, OR SERVICE, AND WAS NEVER PROPERLY ROAD TESTED. Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain 2020-2022 Explorer vehicles equipped with a 2.3L RWD, 3.3L GAS, 3.3L FHEV, or 3.0L ST powertrain. The previous powertrain control module (PCM) update completed under recall 22V-255 did not include the automatic electronic parking brake feature when the vehicle is shifted to park, as intended. In addition, the rear axle horizontal mounting bolt may fracture and cause the driveshaft to disconnect.

Consequence & remedy

Consequence: Without the electronic parking brake applied, the vehicle could rollaway if the driveshaft disconnects. A disconnected driveshaft can also result in a loss of drive power. Either of these scenarios can increase the risk of a crash.

Remedy: Dealers will update the PCM software, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed on May 31, 2023. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Ford's number for this recall is 23S16.

This investigation is being closed based on several considerations.By the most inclusive counting of all alleged rollaway incidents (i.e., counting all alleged rollaway incidents and assuming a singular failure mechanism), the incident rate is low, however during EA09-013, ODI identified a number of different failure mechanisms in 180 incidents related to the alleged defect. The highest rate for any particular failure mechanism, the failure of the Automatic Transmission Parking System, was 4.4/100K.The next-highest failure rate was for the BSI System, at 3.4/100K.For all identified failure mechanisms there has been a drastically declining trend including very few incidents occurring in recent years.Accordingly, this investigation is closed. The closing of this investigation does not constitute a finding by NHTSA that a safety-related defect does not exist. For additional information regarding this investigation, see the complete closing resume in the document file for EA09-013.
