I CAN EVEN FEEL IT WHEN IT CHANGES GEARS WHEN DRIVING. SOMETIMES MORE SUDDEN THAN OTHER TIMES. THEY SAID THEY KNEW EXACTLY WHAT IT IS....SO THEY KEPT MY CAR FOR 6 HOURS TO TELL ME THAT I OWED THEM $89 FOR TELLING ME WHAT'S WRONG, AND THEN TOLD ME ITS $1,300 TO FIX IT. THEY SAID SORRY ABOUT YOUR LUCK, NO RECALL YET, SO YOU HAVE TO PAY FOR IT YOURSELF. I WOULD BE HAPPY TO PURSUE THIS FURTHER... THIS IS DANGEROUS, AND SHOULD BE ADDRESSED BY FORD BEFORE PEOPLE ARE HURT. *TR

I HAVE AN ISSUE WITH MY TRANSMISSION IN MY 2002 FORD EXPLORER. THE CAR HAS 76,000 MILES AND THE O/D LIGHT FLASHES AND 2ND GEAR IS A MESS. IT STARTED OUT OF NO WHERE. I GOOGLED THE PROBLEM AND CAME ACROSS THIS WEBSITE: HTTP://WWW.CARCOMPLAINTS.COM/FORD/EXPLORER/2002/TRANSMISSION/O_D_LIGHT_IS_BLINKING.SHTML IT IS A SHAME THAT OVER 100 PEOPLE HAVE COMPLAINED ABOUT THIS SAME ISSUE AND THAT'S JUST THE PEOPLE WHO FOUND THAT SITE. I AM A HARD WORKING SELF EMPLOYED MAN WHO TRY'S TO STAND BY AMERICAN MADE, BUT I AM ABSOLUTELY FURIOUS THAT FORD HAS LET THIS ISSUE GO. I HAVE OWNED THE VEHICLE FOR 2 YEARS AND THE TIRE ROD AND BARRING HAVE ALREADY WENT BAD. AS WELL AS THE TRANSFER CASE FOR THE 4X4 HAS WENT OUT AS WELL. BOTH OF THOSE ISSUES WHERE ALSO REPORTED BY OTHERS ON THE ABOVE WEBSITE. HOW IN THE WORLD CAN FORD ASK THE GOVERNMENT TO BAIL THEM OUT WHEN THE VERY PEOPLE WHO PURCHASED THEIR PRODUCT KEEP GETTING STUCK WITH THE BILL COMING AND GOING. I WILL TAKE THIS COMPLAINT TO MY STATE REPRESENTATIVE IN AN EFFORT TO HOLD FORD ACCOUNTABLE FOR THEIR ACTIONS BEFORE GETTING ONE TAX DOLLAR FROM HONEST HARD WORKING AMERICANS. *TR

I UNDERSTAND THERE ARE WORSE VEHICLE FAILURES OUT THERE, BUT THE SHEER FACT THAT SO MANY OWNERS OF MY VEHICLE, 2004 FORD EXPLORER (AND ITS RESPECTIVE BROTHERS: LINCOLN AVIATOR AND MERCURY MOUNTAINEER) ARE EXPERIENCING TRANSMISSION FAILURE HAS LED ME HERE. THE TRANSMISSION IN MY TRUCK IS GETTING PROGRESSIVELY WORSE AND AT THE MOMENT I AM ALMOST AFRAID TO HAVE MY WIFE AND OUR 2 CHILDREN RIDE IN IT. THE DELAY IN THE SHIFT CAUSES US TO SLOW SLIGHTLY IN TRAFFIC AND I FEAR (AS DO SO MANY OTHER FORD/MERCURY AND LINCOLN OWNERS EXPERIENCING THE SAME PROBLEM) THAT ITS INEVITABLE FAILURE MAY RESULT IN AN ACCIDENT OR WORSE. FORD REFUSES TO ACCEPT ANY RESPONSIBILITY FOR THIS EVEN THOUGH EVERY OWNER IS EXPERIENCING THIS AT THE SAME MILEAGE ON THE SAME MODEL VEHICLE. ONE RECALL, IN 2005 I BELIEVE, ADDRESSED A NEED FOR "SOLENOID ADDITIVE" TO THE TRANSMISSION. MANY FEEL THIS WAS JUST A BAND-AID PLACED OVER A BROKEN BONE FOR FORD AND MERELY DELAYED THE TRANSMISSIONS FAILURE. (PAST THE WARRANTY) COULD IT BE THAT SO MANY EXPLORER / MOUNTAINEER / AVIATOR OWNERS ARE SIMPLY RUNNING THEIR $30,000+ VEHICLES INTO THE GROUND? OR IS FORD REFUSING TO STAND BEHIND A FAULTY PRODUCT? JUST LIKE THE FIRESTONE TIRES SEVERAL YEARS BACK, FORD SHOULD BE HELD ACCOUNTABLE BEFORE A BAD SITUATION BECOMES DISASTROUS. *TR

26V402000 · Power Train:automatic Transmission

Jun 24, 2026

Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain 2018-2021 Navigator, Expedition, 2020-2021 Explorer, Lincoln Aviator, and 2021 F-150 vehicles. The transmission park pawl may engage while the vehicle is in motion, resulting in park system damage.

Consequence & remedy

Consequence: Park system damage may result in a vehicle rollaway, increasing the risk of a crash.

Remedy: Dealers will update the powertrain control module software, and inspect and replace any damaged transmission components as necessary, free of charge. Interim letters, notifying owners of the safety risk, were mailed July 10, 2026. Additional letters will be sent once the remedy is available, anticipated in April 2027. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Ford's number for this recall is 26S48. Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain 2020-2022 Explorer vehicles equipped with a 2.3L RWD, 3.3L GAS, 3.3L FHEV, or 3.0L ST powertrain. The previous powertrain control module (PCM) update completed under recall 22V-255 did not include the automatic electronic parking brake feature when the vehicle is shifted to park, as intended. In addition, the rear axle horizontal mounting bolt may fracture and cause the driveshaft to disconnect.

Consequence & remedy

Consequence: Without the electronic parking brake applied, the vehicle could rollaway if the driveshaft disconnects. A disconnected driveshaft can also result in a loss of drive power. Either of these scenarios can increase the risk of a crash.

Remedy: Dealers will update the PCM software, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed on May 31, 2023. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Ford's number for this recall is 23S16.
