I HAVE BEEN TOLD TO HAVE TWO ADDITIVES PUT INTO THE TRANSMISSION FLUID AND REPLACE THE SOLENOID. THE ADDITIVES ARE NOT EVEN AVAILABLE FROM FORD IN AUSTRALIA. THEY SELL IT BUT NO PARTS. AMAZING. I EVEN HAD TO SOURCE THE PARTS FOR THE REAR DIFF MYSELF FROM THE U.S. FORD AUSTRALIA COULD NOT GIVE A PRICE, DATE ETC. THEY TOOK THE MONEY BUT DID NOT WARN ANYONE ABOUT THE FACT THAT YOU ARE DRIVING A TIME BOMB. WE BOUGHT THIS CAR USED FROM A FORD DEALER. I ONLY WISH THERE WAS A WAY TO PROVE THEY KNEW AND DID NOT DISCLOSE. IT WOULD BE AN INTERESTING CLASS ACTION AGAINST THE DEALERS IF FORD WILL NOT TAKE RESPONSIBILITY. I JUST WANT TO GET RID OF IT BUT CAN'T IN CLEAR CONSCIENCE DUMP IT ON SOME OTHER POOR BUGGER. THIS CAR HAS SUFFERED FROM EVERY PROBLEM FROM FLASHING ABS TO DIFF TO TRANSMISSION. THE LAST TIME THE TRANSMISSION SLIPPED THE CAR ROLLED. LUCKILY NO ONE WAS IN FRONT OF THE CAR CONSIDERING IT WAS PUT INTO REVERSE. *TR

TRANSMISSION FAILURE ON FORD EXPLORER 2004... THE TRANSMISSION FAILED ON MY EXPLORER, 3 OF THE 4 GEARS WERE GONE!.... THIS COST $7,000 TO BE REPLACED... I BELIEVE THIS IS UNACCEPTABLE FOR A 3 YEAR OLD CAR TO HAVE THIS TYPE OF PROBLEM AT THIS COST. NOT TO MENTION I WORKED WITH A GUY WHO HAD AN EXPLORER AND A MOUNTAINEER AND THE TRANSMISSION WENT ON BOTH OF THOSE VEHICLES.. THEY WERE AN 02 AND 04. THEN THIS PAST WEEK I HAD TO HAVE MY BRAKES DONE. AND THE REPAIR SHOP SAID I NEEDED A FEW OTHER MINOR THINGS DONE... BUT I TOLD THEM I HAD ALREADY SPENT $8,000 (ALL BALL BEARINGS REPLACED $1000 + 7000 FOR TRANSMISSION)ON THE VEHICLE RECENTLY AND CAN'T GET IT DONE RIGHT NOW. AND THEY ASKED IF THE PROBLEM WAS THE TRANSMISSION... I SAID, "YES WHY", THEY TOLD ME THEY HAD 5 EXPLORERS FROM THE AROUND THE SAME AGE AS MINE THAT HAD TRANSMISSION FAILURES. NOW THAT'S A TOTAL OF 8 EXPLORERS IN MY AREA AND I HAVE HEARD OF OTHERS FROM OTHER PEOPLE. FORD NEEDS TO MAKE GOOD ON THIS AND OFFER SOME DISCOUNT ON A FIX FOR THIS OR HAVE ALL THE EXPLORERS FROM THIS TIME PERIOD RECALLED. I BOUGHT A NEW TRANSMISSION EVEN THOUGH IS WAS $4000 MORE THAN A REBUILT ONE, BECAUSE IT CAME WITH A LIFE-TIME WARRANTY.... I WOULD APPRECIATE IT IF THERE WAS AN INVESTIGATION MADE INTO FORD'S EXPLORER SO, THAT PAST AND FUTURE PROBLEMS CAN BE RECTIFIED. *TR

I PULLED UP INTO THE DRIVE AND PUT THE CAR INTO PARK. I EXITED MY 2002 FORD EXPLORER AND OPENED THE BACK DOOR, UNSTRAPPED MY GRANDSON FROM HIS SAFETY SEAT. HE WENT INTO THE HOUSE TO GET A GAME BOY SO I RE-ENTERED THE FRONT SEAT TO WAIT FOR HIM. I SAT THERE A FEW MINUTES AND WHEN HE CAME OUT OF THE HOUSE, I WAS EXITING MY 2002 FORD EXPLORER WHEN I HEARD A NOISE. THE CAR ENGAGED ITSELF INTO REVERSE. I TRIED TO PLACE MY RIGHT FOOT BACK INTO THE CAR AND PRESS ON THE BRAKE, BUT THE DOOR KNOCKED ME DOWN. I WENT UNDER THE DRIVERS DOOR AND THE FRONT LEFT TIRE BEGAN TO RUN OVER ME. I GRABBED THE UNDERNEATH OF THE DOOR AND TRIED TO HANG ON BUT THE TIRE WAS RUNNING OVER MY PELVIC AND MY LEFT LEG. THE CAR DRUG ME ON THE CONCRETE , THEN IT STOPPED. I WAS PINNED UNDER THE FRONT DRIVER'S TIRE. BEFORE THIS INJURY,I HAD PROBLEMS WITH THIS CAR AT 26,000 MILES SENT IT FOR REPAIRS BUT THE DEALER KEPT TELLING ME IT WAS OK. THE CAR WOULD JERK DURING TAKE OFF AND HESITATE WHEN PLACED IN REVERSE. AFTER THE ACCIDENT I TOOK IT TO OTHER DEALERS AND FINALLY ONE PUT IT ON THE TEST RACK AND TOLD ME IT HAD TRANSMISSION PROBLEMS. NOT SURE WHAT FORD HAS DONE WITH THE PARTS. *TR

I PURCHASED A 2004 FORD EXPLORER 30JUN08, IN MARCH 2009, IN LESS THAN A YEAR I HAVE HAD TO REPLACE THE MODULE/ENGINE CONTROL, THE BATTERY AND THE ALTERNATOR AT THE WILLOWBROOK FORD DEALERSHIP. I PAID A TOTAL OF 2033.60 IN REPAIRS. WHEN I GOT HOME LAST FRIDAY NIGHT AND WAS PARKING MY CAR, AS I WENT INTO REVERSE I FELT A JOLT IN SHIFTING FROM THE TRANSMISSION. YESTERDAY DRIVING TO WORK AGAIN I FELT THE TRANSMISSION SLIPPING AND HARD SHIFTING. THE O/D LIGHT BEGIN TO FLASH AND I COULDN'T ACCELERATE OVER 40MPH. ON MY WAY HOME FROM WORK, AGAIN I COULD NOT ACCELERATE OVER 30MPH BUT NOW ITS MAKING A HORRIBLE NOISE AND THE SERVICE ENGINE AND O/D LIGHTS ARE FLASHING. THIS IS A WELL KNOWN PROBLEM AS I HAVE READ NUMEROUS COMPLAINTS ABOUT IT ONLINE. WHY HASN'T FORD RECALLED THESE FAULTY TRANSMISSION? I HAVE UNTIL JUL10 BEFORE THIS CAR IS PAID OFF AND STILL OWE OVER 6000.00. THIS IS THE FIFTH FORD I'VE OWNED AND I AM TOTALLY DISGUSTED BY THIS WHOLE SITUATION. AS A SINGLE MOM OF 3, I DON'T HAVE ANY THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS SITTING AROUND WAITING TO THROW IT AWAY IN FORD REPAIRS. SOMEONE HAS TO STEP IN FOR US CONSUMERS WHO ARE BEING RIPPED OFF. PLEASE HELP US. *TR

This investigation is being closed based on several considerations.By the most inclusive counting of all alleged rollaway incidents (i.e., counting all alleged rollaway incidents and assuming a singular failure mechanism), the incident rate is low, however during EA09-013, ODI identified a number of different failure mechanisms in 180 incidents related to the alleged defect. The highest rate for any particular failure mechanism, the failure of the Automatic Transmission Parking System, was 4.4/100K.The next-highest failure rate was for the BSI System, at 3.4/100K.For all identified failure mechanisms there has been a drastically declining trend including very few incidents occurring in recent years.Accordingly, this investigation is closed. The closing of this investigation does not constitute a finding by NHTSA that a safety-related defect does not exist. For additional information regarding this investigation, see the complete closing resume in the document file for EA09-013.
