SEE FORD MOTOR CO TSB 04B22 OR NHTSA ITEM NUMBER 10013306, FORD EXPLORER 2004. SUBJECT VEHICLE'S TRANSMISSION, TO A LESSER DEGREE, HAD STARTED TO EXHIBIT THE CHARACTERISTICS DESCRIBED THEREIN PRIOR TO RECEIPT OF THE 04B22 PROGRAM NOTICE. RANDOM VIOLENT TRANSMISSION OPERATION. CAUSES VEHICLE TO LURCH WHEN ACCELERATOR IS DEPRESSED AFTER PLACING TRANSMISSION IN GEAR WITH VEHICLE STATIONARY, OCCURS MOST OFTEN IN REVERSE , BEFORE OR AFTER VEHICLE STARTS TO MOVE, MOST OFTEN BEFORE VEHICLE HAS STARTED MOVING. I CONSIDER THIS A SAFETY ISSUE AND SHORTENING SERVICE LIFE OF DRIVE LINE COMPONENTS. FIVE TIMES TO DEALERSHIP IN ATTEMPT TO HAVE PROBLEM CORRECTED UNDER WARRANTY, DEALERSHIP FINE; MANUFACTURER'S REPS. VERBALLY ADVISED ME THAT TRANSMISSION OPERATION IS "NORMAL", I REQUESTED THEY PUT IT IN WRITING, THEY REFUSED. IT IS MY UNDERSTANDING, VERBALLY, THEY WILL NOT DO ANYMORE TO CORRECT THE PROBLEM. THE VEHICLE IS UNDER WARRANTY. FORD RETAINED ALL ORIGINAL PARTS REMOVED FROM TRANSMISSION (WARRANTY WORK). AFTER FILING THIS COMPLAINT AND I RECEIVE CASE NUMBER I WILL FORWARD TO ODI COPIES OF ALL DOCUMENTS FROM MY FILES ON THIS ISSUE. PLEASE NOTE THAT THE FAILURE MILEAGE(7500) LISTED ELSEWHERE HEREIN IS ONLY AN ESTIMATE OF THE MILEAGE AT WHICH THIS RANDOM MALFUNCTION OCURRED; IT STARTED SUBTLY AND INCREASED IN MAGNITUDE OVER A PERIOD OF TIME.

THE "O/D" LIGHT OF MY 2002 FORD EXPLORER LIT UP WITHOUT WARNING WHILE I WAS TURNING. ENGINE "REVVED" BUT DIDN'T ACCELERATE. ONCOMING CARS SWERVED TO AVOID ME. THIS WAS AN UNSAFE SITUATION, AS I EXPECTED THE VEHICLE TO FUNCTION PROPERLY. I TOOK THE CAR TO THE DEALER AND WAS TOLD THE TRANSMISSION HAD TO BE TOTALLY REBUILT, FOR $2,400, SINCE I WAS 4000 MI OUT OF WARRANTY, EVEN THOUGH <3 YEARS. I ASKED THE SERVICE MANAGER IF FORD WOULD COVER IT. THE ZONE PERSON, ADVISED NO. I PHONED CUSTOMER ASSISTANCE, AND WAS TOLD THERE WERE DEALER/FIELD DISCRETIONARY FUNDS TO PAY FOR REPAIRS OUTSIDE OF WARRANTY, BUT ONLY FOR "LOYAL" CUSTOMERS. I WAS TOLD THAT I SHOULD HAVE PURCHASED THE VEHICLE NEW AND HAD MY MAINTENANCE DONE AT THE DEALER. I ASKED WHAT MAINTENANCE SHOULD BEEN DONE ON THE TRANSMISSION. I WAS TOLD THAT THERE WAS NONE. I SPOKE WITH A GENTLEMAN IN THE QUALITY DEPARTMENT AT A LOCAL TRANSMISSION PLANT, WHO SAID THIS WAS A COMMON FAILURE, BUT THAT FORD WOULDN'T OFFER ANY HELP BECAUSE "MONEY IS TIGHT". HE SAID THAT THE BANDS IN MY TRANSMISSION HAD BEEN SUPERCEDED TWICE DUE TO THIS PROBLEM, AND A TECH BULLETIN EXISTED, EXPLAINING THIS TO DEALERSHIPS. I READ MANY OTHER COMPLAINTS ON THIS WEBSITE! I FAIL TO UNDERSTAND WHY FORD HONORS A SECRET WARRANTY FOR "LOYAL" CUSTOMERS YET OFFERS NO RECOURSE FOR CUSTOMERS WHO WERE PUT IN THE SAME UNSAFE SITUATION, JUST BECAUSE THEY BOUGHT THE VEHICLE USED. I HAD THE REPAIR DONE AT AN INDEPENDENT REPAIR FACILITY. FORD ADVISES THEY WILL NOT TAKE ANY FINANCIAL RESPONSIBILITY BECAUSE THE REPAIR WAS DONE AT AN INDEPENDENT. I AM ONE OF MANY CONSUMERS WHO MUST DRIVE IN A DEFECTIVE AND DANGEROUS VEHICLE, DUE TO THIS TRANSMISSION PROBLEM. IT FAILED ME ONCE WITHOUT WARNING, I PAID $1,200 FOR REPAIR, AND APPROACH INTERSECTIONS WITH TREPIDATION DUE TO THE POSSIBILITY OF MY TRANSMISSION UNEXPECTEDLY SLIPPING AGAIN. I WOULD WELCOME CONTACT AT 248.808.1279 TO DISCUSS RESOLUTION OF THIS DANGEROUS ISSUE.

DEAR NHTSA: IN OCTOBER 2003 I PURCHASED THE NBX - V8 VERSION OF THE FORD EXPLORER WITH AN UPGRADED TOW PACKAGE FOR MY WIFE. SHE NEVER USES THE TOW PACKAGE AND I, VERY OCCASIONALLY PULL A 300LB UTILITY TRAILER. I GET THE OIL CHANGED RELIGIOUSLY AND RECENTLY HAD THE 30,000 MILE 4WD LUBRICATION PACKAGE FROM GOODYEAR FOR APPROX. $500. AT 34,000MI MY WIFE BEGAN TO NOTICE A NON-DESCRIPT NOISE IN THE REAR END, A RUMBLE AT SLOW SPEEDS WHILE TURNING. SHE CARRIES THINGS IN THE BACK AND THOUGHT THEY WERE ROLLING AROUND. I DROVE THE CAR AT 36,600 MI AND ALSO NOTICED THE NOISE BUT WE HAD A LOW REAR TIRE AND I THOUGHT IT WAS THE TIRE PRESSURE. THE TIRE ACTUALLY PICKED UP A NAIL AND WENT FLAT AND I BROUGHT THE TIRE TO GOODYEAR FOR REPAIR. AFTER THE REPAIR THE REAR END NOISE PERSISTED ONLY AT LOW SPEEDS AND WE FINALLY GOT THE CAR IN TO GOODYEAR FOR EVALUATION AT 38,000 MILES. THEY REPLACED THE REAR DIFFERENTIAL FLUID AGAIN AND THE NOISE PERSISTED. THEY THEN WENT ON LINE AND PULLED A TECHNICAL SERVICE BULLETIN TSB 04-17-5 WHICH WAS FOR LIMITED SLIP AXLE CHATTER, SHUDDER, BINDING SENSATION OR VIBRATION DURING LOW SPEED TURNING MANEUVERS IN 2002-2004 FORD EXPLORERS, 2003-2004 EXPEDITIONS AND 2004 F-150S. THIS WAS EXACTLY WHAT I WAS EXPERIENCING. SINCE THIS VEHICLE IS NOT USED OFF ROAD, IS NOT USED TO TOW ANYTHING HEAVY, IS PAMPERED BUT DOES GET A FAIR AMOUNT OF HIGHWAY MILES 38,000MI IN 19 MONTHS, I FELT THAT HAVING A TRANSMISSION PROBLEM AT THIS STAGE WAS UNUSUAL. WELL, AFTER TALKING TO MY MANAGER AT WORK, HALF THE FORD EXPLORER FLEET IN BOSTON WAS HAVING THIS PROBLEM, WITH ONE VEHICLE IN THE SHOP 3 MONTHS AND ONE NEVER SEEING THE LIGHT OF DAY YET. THE TSB NOTED PROBLEMS WITH THE ENTIRE TRANSMISSION. WHAT ABOUT NEXT TIME?? MY VEHICLE. VEHICLE # [XXX] FORD EXPLORER SILVER V8 NBX VERSION? THEY ALSO KNOW THEY HAVE A REAL PROBLEM WITH THEIR TRANSMISSIONS AND THE CONSUMER WILL END UP EATING IT. IS FORD QUALITY JOB 1?? *JS INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA),

This investigation is being closed based on several considerations.By the most inclusive counting of all alleged rollaway incidents (i.e., counting all alleged rollaway incidents and assuming a singular failure mechanism), the incident rate is low, however during EA09-013, ODI identified a number of different failure mechanisms in 180 incidents related to the alleged defect. The highest rate for any particular failure mechanism, the failure of the Automatic Transmission Parking System, was 4.4/100K.The next-highest failure rate was for the BSI System, at 3.4/100K.For all identified failure mechanisms there has been a drastically declining trend including very few incidents occurring in recent years.Accordingly, this investigation is closed. The closing of this investigation does not constitute a finding by NHTSA that a safety-related defect does not exist. For additional information regarding this investigation, see the complete closing resume in the document file for EA09-013.
