WHEN WE PURCHASED THE VEHICLE IT WENT INTO GEAR ROUGH AND I ASKED THE SALES PERSON ABOUT IT AND HE SAID THAT IS HOW THIS VEHICLE GOES INTO GEAR. WE STARTED TO NOTICE HESITATION WHEN WE ACCELERATED FROM EITHER A STOP OR WHILE DRIVING. WE BROUGHT IT IN AND THEY SAID THEY CALIBRATED THE COMPUTER. THEN WE STARTED TO GET REAR END LEAKS AND HAD TO BE REPAIRED 3 TIMES. THE TRANSMISSION PROBLEMS CONTINUED AND WE BROUGHT IT TO ANOTHER DEALER BECAUSE OF THE POOR SERVICE AT THE PURCHASING DEALERSHIP. THEY REPLACED A SOLENOID VALVE AND OVERHAULED MAIN CONTROL. THIS DID NOT HELP AND THEN THE PROBLEM BEGAN TO SHOW NEW SYMPTOMS. NOW WHEN WE BACK UP IT LOCKS UP AND THEN JERKS BACK INTO GEAR GOING BACKWARDS. I HAVE TOLD BOTH DEALERSHIPS OF MY CONCERNS ABOUT RESIDUAL DAMAGE TO THE TRANSMISSION AND WAS ASSURED THAT IT WOULD NOT HAPPEN. IT HAS. OUR LAST COUPLE OF VISITS WE HAVE BEEN LIED TO AND THE WORK ORDER HAS NOT BEEN CORRECTLY REFLECTING WHAT WE SAID AND WHAT WAS FOUND BY THE TECH'S. THERE IS NO MENTION ON THE REPORT THAT TWO OF THEN HAD THE REVERES PROBLEMS HAPPENING TO THEM. I DID NOT WANT TO LEAVE WITH IT LIKE THAT BUT THEY WOULD NOT CHANGE IT. I DO HAVE A TECH'S STATEMENT WRITTEN ON IT AND SIGNED. NOW THEY REPLACED THE REAR END ABS SENSOR AND FOLLOWED THE 05-3-8 RECALL 4X4 CONTROL MODULE PER HOTLINE. THEY SAID THEY DID TWO ROAD TESTS BUT I CHECKED MY MILEAGE AND THEY ONLY DROVE 1.9 MILES. HOW CAN YOU DO TWO TRANSMISSION ROAD TESTS WITHIN 1.9 MILES? WE ARE VERY CONCERNED AND AFRAID TO DRIVE THIS VEHICLE AND INJURE OR KILL OUR FAMILY AND POSSIBLE SOMEONE ELSE. AFTER DOING SOME RESEARCH WE HAVE FOUND OUT THAT THIS IS AN ON GOING PROBLEM WITH THE 2004 FORD EXPLORER AND THAT THERE ARE HUNDREDS OF PEOPLE IN THE SAME SITUATION WITH NO RESOLUTION IN SIGHT. THIS AT THE VERY LEAST WILL COST US ALL THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS FOR FORDS MISTAKE AND LACK OF RESPONSIBLE ACTION. BUT IN TRUTH OUR FAMILIES WILL END UP EITHER INJURED OR DEAD FIRST. WHY WILL NO ONE HELP US WITH THIS PROBLEM? R.S. *NM

THE COMPLAINT IS DIRECTED AT A WIDELY KNOWN MANUFACTURING DEFECT IN 2002 FORD EXPLORERS INVOLVING THE DRIVE TRAIN. THE PROBLEM SURFACES JUST BEFORE THE 36K WARRANTY PERIOD AND BEGINS AS A WHINE IN THE REAR DIFFERENTIAL. THE WHINE GETS WORSE OVER TIME AND AT THIS WRITING MY LOCAL FORD DEALERSHIP HAS HAD PARTS ON ORDER FOR 3 WEEKS WITH NO DEFINITIVE DELIVERY DATE. MY EXPLORER HAS 40K MILES AND JUST RAN OUT OF THE 3YR WARRANTY IN MAY 2005. EVEN WITH NEW PARTS INSTALLED THESE 2002 MODELS HAVE THE SAME RESULTS RE-OCCUR IN 10-20K MILES. THIS IS, BY ALL ACCOUNTS, NOT A DEFECT THAT WILL LIKELY RESULT IN PERSONAL INJURY TO ANY THING BUT YOUR WALLET, BUT IT IS OF SUCH PROPORTION IN THE MARKETPLACE THAT THE CONSUMER SHOULD HAVE SOMEBODY TO GO TO BAT FOR THEM. THESE FORD EXPLORERS ARE LEMONS IF YOU CAN'T GET 40K OUT OF THE DRIVE TRAINS. I HAVE A 1993 EXPL THAT HAS 200K AND NO ISSUE. A RECALL SHOULD BE A MANDATE FOR THE CONSUMER. AT THIS WRITING I HAVE PARKED THE VEHICLE TO AVOID ANY MORE MILES AND I AM WAITING FOR ARRIVAL OF PARTS. PLEASE LISTEN TO US, THE INDIVIDUAL, AND HELP US AS WE FIGHT FOR WHAT IS RIGHT WIT THE CORPORATION AND IT'S CLOUT. *NM

I OWN A 2002 FORD EXPLORER 4X4 AND WHILE DRIVING THE VEHICLE THE O/D LIGHT BEGIN TO FLASH AND AT A STOP LIGHT THE VEHICLE WOULD NOT ENGAGED TO DRIVE. FINALLY AFTER TURNING OF THE VEHICLE AND RE STARTING IT AND PROCEEDED TO GO. TOOK IT INTO THE DEALERSHIP WHERE THEY INFORMED ME THAT THEY WOULD HAVE TO DROP THE PAN AND IF THERE WAS METAL IN IT I WOULD NEED A WHOLE NEW TRANSMISSION. THEY CALLED ME A FEW HOURS LATER TO INFORM ME THAT THE TECHNICIAN SAW LOTS OF METAL AND THE COST OF A NEW TRANSMISSION WOULD BE 3400.00 DOLLARS. I SAID ARE YOU SURE THAT THE PROBLEM HAS BEEN DIAGNOSED PROPERLY WITH A TRANSMISSION WITH 50,000 MILES AND HE SAID THE TESTS DON'T LIE. WELL, I SAID I WOULD BE UP TO THE DEALERSHIP TO SEE THIS METAL AND 2 MINUTES LATER HE CALLED SAYING THAT THE TECH. DIDN'T ACTUALLY PULL THE PAN DOWN. I PICKED UP MY EXPLORER AND THEY WERE SO VERY NICE TO GIVE ME THE TECHNICAL SERVICE BULLETIN ON IT TOO; THINK THAT WAS A MISTAKE. TOOK IT TO COTTMANS TRANSMISSION RIGHT DOWN FROM THE DEALERSHIP AND THEY HOOKED IT UP TO A COMPUTER AND CODES P0733 AND P0745 WERE FLASHING: PROBLEM A BROKEN INTERMEDIATE BAND AND O/D BAND. THEY SAID THAT IT COULD HAVE MORE DAMAGE BUT WOULD SEE WHEN TRANSMISSION WAS DOWN. THEY WEREN'T SURPRISED BY THE DEALERSHIPS CLAIM; IT IS ALL ABOUT MONEY TO THEM. AFTER 2 DAYS THEY INFORMED ME THAT THE 2 BANDS WOULD HAVE TO BE REPLACED, A TORQUE CONVERTER, TRANSMISSION REBUILD KIT AND A LITTLE THING CALLED A PLANET GEAR WAS CAUSING THE WHOLE PROBLEM IT SEEMS. THE BEARING IN THE GEAR WAS DESTROYED. THEY ORDERED THE PLANET GEAR FROM THE KENTUCKY PLANT AND LOW AND BEHOLD THAT BEARING IN THE GEAR WAS DESTROYED AS WELL. I BELIEVE THAT THE TRANSMISSION PROBLEMS THAT PEOPLE ARE EXPERIENCING IS COMING FROM THE DEFECT. THE COST OF THIS LITTLE REPAIR WAS 1500.00 DOLLARS MORE THAN HALF OF WHAT THEY SAID AND THEY HAVE THE SAME TSB REPORT ON THE PROBLEM. CROWN FORD IS THE DEALER. *JB

This investigation is being closed based on several considerations.By the most inclusive counting of all alleged rollaway incidents (i.e., counting all alleged rollaway incidents and assuming a singular failure mechanism), the incident rate is low, however during EA09-013, ODI identified a number of different failure mechanisms in 180 incidents related to the alleged defect. The highest rate for any particular failure mechanism, the failure of the Automatic Transmission Parking System, was 4.4/100K.The next-highest failure rate was for the BSI System, at 3.4/100K.For all identified failure mechanisms there has been a drastically declining trend including very few incidents occurring in recent years.Accordingly, this investigation is closed. The closing of this investigation does not constitute a finding by NHTSA that a safety-related defect does not exist. For additional information regarding this investigation, see the complete closing resume in the document file for EA09-013.
