SAME 2-3 SHIFT PROBLEM. ESPECIALLY WHEN COLD...GAS IT ON THE ON-RAMP, ALL OF A SUDDEN IT "POPS" OUT OF GEAR AND YOU'RE HOPING SOMEONE DOESN'T SLAM INTO THE SIDE OF YOUR VEHICLE. AFTER MY LAST NEAR DEATH EXPERIENCE, I TOOK IT TO THE DEALER, THEY SAID IT WAS A VALVE BODY GASKET THAT WAS MISSING? (WHERE DID IT GO?) THEY SAID THEY INSTALLED THE UPGRADE KIT AND PUT IN A NEW GASKET, SAID IT WORKED BETTER. ABOUT 4 MONTHS LATER (WHEN IT GOT COLD), IT STARTED AGAIN. WORK & PARTS ARE SUPPOSED TO BE UNDER WARRANTY, BUT THE DEALER "THINKS" IT MIGHT BE SOMETHING ELSE. MY COMPLAINT IS, 4 MONTHS AGO I PAID $900 FOR THEM TO FIX WHAT IS A COMMON PROBLEM WITH THEIR PRODUCT, THE EXACT SAME PROBLEM IS HAPPENING AGAIN AND THEY ARE LOOKING FOR WAYS TO GET MORE MONEY OUT OF ME, OR WORM THEIR WAY OUT OF FIXING WHAT I'VE ALREADY PAID THEM TO FIX. THE TECHNICIAN SUGGESTED IT MIGHT BE AN INTERNAL LEAK, THE TORQUE CONVERTER, THEN SUGGESTED I MIGHT WANT TO REPLACE THE TRANNY. MY RESPONSE WAS YOU HAD IT TORN APART LAST TIME, YOU DIDN'T FIX THE PROBLEM, WHY SHOULD I TRUST YOU NOW? I DON'T SUBSCRIBE TO THE THEOLOGY OF "REPAIR THROUGH ATTRITION". THIS IS A SERIOUS PROBLEM THAT FORD SHOULD ADDRESS OR BE SUED FOR. *TR

AT 85K MILES, UNDER NORMAL DRIVING USE/CONDITION, THE TRANSMISSION AND REAR DIFFERENTIAL HAVE FAILED ON MY 2002 EXPLORER. THERE ARE FORD TSBS THAT IDENTIFY AND ACKNOWLEDGE THESE PROBLEMS AS EVIDENT IN MANY OF THEIR VEHICLES, YET REFUSE TO ABSORB ANY COST OF THE $3200 IT WILL TAKE TO REPAIR THEM. THE WHEEL BEARINGS ALSO CONTINUALLY FAIL AT A COST OF $500 EACH, AND HAVE BEEN REPAIRED AT LEAST 3 TIMES AT MY OWN EXPENSE. THE TORQUE CONVERTER AND BUSHINGS NEED REPLACED, AND THE TRANSMISSION COOLER IS WORN. MY MECHANIC EXPLAINED THESE SHOULD NOT WEAR AS QUICKLY AS 85K MILES, AND FROM THE CURRENT STATE OF ITS CONDITION, RECOMMENDED A COMPLETE TRANSMISSION REBUILD/REPLACE, ALONG WITH A NEW REAR DIFFERENTIAL GEAR SET. I HAVE COME INTO CONTACT WITH HUNDREDS OF FORD OWNERS, OF NEW AND USED VEHICLES ALIKE, WITH THE EXACT SAME PROBLEM AND AM SEEKING ALL RESOURCES AVAILABLE TO INITIATE A SUIT AGAINST FORD FOR ITS EVIDENT MANUFACTURE DEFECTS. *TR

WE TOOK IT TO OUR MECHANIC AND IT WAS DIAGNOSED THAT THE TRANSMISSION NEEDED REPLACED. AFTER LOOKING AT YOUR WEB SITE, AND OTHER SITES, THIS IS A VERY COMMON AND DANGEROUS PROBLEM. I ALSO HAVE AN ISSUE WITH THE RIGHT FRONT WHEEL THAT HAS A SERIOUS RUBBING NOISE WITH A SERIOUS VIBRATION AND IT WAS DIAGNOSED AS A BAD WHEEL BEARING. THIS IS ANOTHER ISSUE WITH THE EXPLORER THAT IS POSTED NUMEROUS TIMES ON YOUR SITE. BOTH OF THE ISSUES SHOULD BE HONORED BY FORD DUE TO THE EXPENSE AND POSSIBLE CHANCE OF INJURY. *TR

IN FEB. 2004 I PURCHASED A BRAND NEW EXPLORER. ABOUT 6 MONTHS INTO OWNERSHIP THERE WERE SOME PROBLEMS WITH A DELAY IN SWITCHING FROM PARK TO REVERSE. I TOOK THE EXPLORER TO THE DEALER. THEY STATED IT WAS THE THROTTLE POSITION SENSOR, WHICH THE DEALER DID REPLACE. APPROXIMATELY A YEAR LATER, THE SAME PROBLEM STARTED TO HAPPEN AGAIN. I TOOK THE EXPLORER BACK TO THE DEALER AND THEY REPAIRED THE SAME PART AGAIN. THE PROBLEM CONTINUED AND PROGRESSIVELY GOT WORSE SO I WAS FORCED TO TAKE IT BACK AGAIN IN DECEMBER OF 2006 TO THE DEALER. THEY PROCEED TO TELL ME THAT THE PROBLEM IS THE SAME EXACT PROBLEM WHICH HAS ALREADY BEEN FIXED, TWICE. THIS TIME THEY TELL ME MY WARRANTY HAS EXPIRED AND I WILL HAVE TO PAY FOR THE REPAIRS. WELL IT SEEMS TO ME IF IT WAS REPAIRED CORRECTLY THE FIRST OR SECOND TIME THEN IT WOULDN'T BE HAPPENING JUST ABOUT EVERY YEAR. I WOULD DRIVE MY TRUCK LOCALLY AND IT NORMALLY WOULD NOT WANT TO MOVE. ONE DAY ON MY LUNCH HOUR, I TRIED TO CROSS A MAJOR 4 LANE HIGHWAY AND THIS 2004 FORD EXPLORER, LEFT ME STRANDED IN THE MIDDLE OF THIS LUNCH RUSH HOUR TRAFFIC, TO BE T-BONED BY ON COMING TRAFFIC. TALK ABOUT, EMOTIONAL DISTRESS; I WAS SO UPSET THAT I HAD TO GO HOME FOR THE REST OF THE DAY. IT IS JUST AS SCARY TO THINK MY TRUCK WOULD BREAK DOWN DUE TO MANUFACTURING PROBLEMS WITH MY KIDS IN THE TRUCK. THIS HAPPENED SO OFTEN AND MOST TIMES AT NIGHT. THE THROTTLE POSITION SENSOR AND TRANSMISSION FLUID COST ME $550.00 AT 80K MILES. THE DEALER INFORMED ME THAT YOU ARE NOT SUPPOSED TO SERVICE THE TRANSMISSION UNTIL 100K BUT THE DEALER SUGGESTED IT DUE TO MY MANY PROBLEMS. I AM AT THE POINT WHERE I JUST WILL NEVER BUY ANOTHER FORD VEHICLE. NOTHING HAS BEEN DONE MY TRUCK HAS SAT AT THE DEALER SINCE DEC 2007, I CAN NOT AFFORD THE REPAIRS. IT SEEMS THERE SHOULD BE A CLASS ACTION SUIT FILED AGAINST FORD FOR FAULT TRANSMISSIONS. *TR

This investigation is being closed based on several considerations.By the most inclusive counting of all alleged rollaway incidents (i.e., counting all alleged rollaway incidents and assuming a singular failure mechanism), the incident rate is low, however during EA09-013, ODI identified a number of different failure mechanisms in 180 incidents related to the alleged defect. The highest rate for any particular failure mechanism, the failure of the Automatic Transmission Parking System, was 4.4/100K.The next-highest failure rate was for the BSI System, at 3.4/100K.For all identified failure mechanisms there has been a drastically declining trend including very few incidents occurring in recent years.Accordingly, this investigation is closed. The closing of this investigation does not constitute a finding by NHTSA that a safety-related defect does not exist. For additional information regarding this investigation, see the complete closing resume in the document file for EA09-013.
