"DRIVER DOOR AJAR" LIGHT WILL NOT GO OUT WHEN DOOR IS TIGHTLY CLOSED. THIS KEEPS DOORS FROM AUTO-LOCKING WHILE IGNITION IS ON. HAPPENED FIRST TIME IN JUNE 2012, AT 41K MILES,4 MOS AFTER I BOUGHT CERTIFIED USED CAR. DOOR LATCH WAS REPLACED BY DEALER UNDER WARRANTY. IT HAS BEEN HAPPENING AGAIN NOW AT 85K MILES, AUGUST 2014. ALSO DOME LIGHTS WILL NOT GO OUT. BATTERY RAN DOWN LAST NITE, COULD NOT START CAR THIS MORNING EVEN THO DOME LIGHTS WENT OUT AT SOME POINT. I WAS IN NORTH GA MTNS WHERE THERE IS NO CELL RECEPTION. FORTUNATELY THERE WAS STILL ONE CAR AT THE SITE WHO COULD JUMP THE BATTERY OR I WOULD HAVE BEEN STRANDED THERE. I AM A RETIRED 69 YR OLD WOMAN; IT IS NOT SAFE FOR ME TO DRIVE WITHOUT DOORS LOCKED OR FOR THE BATTERY TO DIE WHEN THERE IS NO REASON FOR THAT TO HAPPEN. THERE ARE MANY MANY REPORTS OF THIS PROBLEM ON FORD EDGE INTERNET SITES. WHY HASN'T THERE BEEN A RECALL BY FORD? ARE THEY WAITING FOR SOMEONE TO GET HURT/KILLED? WHEN I GO TO THE DEALERSHIP TOMORROW, I ANTICIPATE A $400 REPAIR ESTIMATE. I HOPE THERE IS A BETTER RESULT THAN THAT. *TR

DOOR AJAR SENSOR APPEARED, TOOK VEHICLE BACK TO DEALER, REPLACED DOOR LATCH AND DOOR AJAR ICON DISAPPEARED. AUTOMATIC DOOR LATCHES ARE WORKING PROPERLY; HOWEVER, ONE WEEK LATER, AS I WAS DRIVING A WRENCH ICON APPEARED AND MY CAR LOST POWER. IMAGINE THE DANGER INVOLVED IN DRIVING AND LOOSING POWER. CALLED THE DEALER, LEFT THE CAR AGAIN FOR ANOTHER REPAIR SESSION. IT IS MY UNDERSTANDING THAT THE DOOR AJAR SENSOR HAS BEEN VERY PROBLEMATIC FOR THE FORD EDGE MODEL AND THERE HAS NOT BEEN A RECALL. ADD MY COMPLAINT TO THE LIST OF MANY AND HOPEFULLY SOMETHING WILL BE DONE FOR THE CONSUMER. I AM DISAPPOINTED BECAUSE THE VEHICLE STILL SMELLS NEW AND ONLY HAS 40,200 MILES ON IT BUT IS ALREADY HAVING PROBLEMS. ACRONYM FOR FORD=FIX OR REPAIR DAILY, AND I SURE HOPE NOT! FORD HAS ANOTHER ACRONYM, BUT I WILL NOT POST IT AT THIS TIME. TRYING TO REMAIN PATIENT, BUT DILIGENT. *TR

THE TREAD ON THE TIRE WAS STILL GOOD, THE ROAD WAS OK, A LITTLE ROUGH BUT I DIDN'T SEE ANY NEED FOR 2 FLATS. THE STEERING ALSO MAKES A LOUD NOISE WHEN I TURN IT TO THE RIGHT AND TO THE LEFT. I HAD IT LOOKED AT BUT OF COURSE THE DEALER SAYS NOTHING IS WRONG. ITS NOT MAKING A LOUD NOISE FOR NOTHING. *TR

I WAS DRIVING DOWN A BUSY CITY STREET WITH MY DAUGHTER WHEN MY CAR STARTED TO LOSE POWER AND PROCEEDED TO STALL IN THE MIDDLE OF THE ROAD. A WARNING LIGHT (THE WRENCH) POPPED UP WHILE THIS HAPPENED. I WAS LUCKILY IN THE RIGHT HAND LANE AND WAS ABLE TO STEER THE VEHICLE OFF OF THE ROAD INTO A PRIVATE DRIVE. THE VEHICLE THEN COMPLETELY LOST POWER. I WAS ABLE TO START THE VEHICLE AND TRIED TO DRIVE DOWN THE PRIVATE ROAD WHEN THE VEHICLE AGAIN STARTED TO LOSE POWER AND STALL. I THEN CALLED AAA AND HAD A TOW TRUCK PICK UP MY VEHICLE AND TOW IT TO A LOCAL FORD DEALERSHIP. I WAS TOLD THE NEXT DAY BY THE DEALERSHIP THAT IS WAS A FAULTY THROTTLE BODY AND THAT THE PART JUST HAPPENED TO NOT BE COVERED UNDER MY EXTENDED WARRANTY. WHY IS A PART THAT CAN CAUSE A CAR TO STALL OUT WHILE DRIVING NOT COVERED UNDER AN EXTENDED WARRANTY THAT THE FORD DEALERSHIPS ARE SELLING TO THEIR CUSTOMERS? FURTHERMORE, AFTER SEEING SO MANY POSTS ABOUT THIS PARTICULAR PART ON THIS WEBSITE AS WELL AS NUMEROUS OTHERS WHY IS THERE NOT A RECALL ON THESE FAULTY THROTTLE BODIES? THIS A LOT LIKE WHAT CHEVY DID WITH THEIR IGNITION SWITCHES (WHICH WE HAPPEN TO OWN A COBALT AND ARE GOING THROUGH THAT MESS RIGHT NOW) ALLOWING FAULTY PARTS TO BE PLACED INTO THESE VEHICLES WHICH CAN CAUSE THE POTENTIAL FOR SERIOUS ACCIDENTS. I JUST THANK GOD THAT WE WERE NOT ON A MAJOR HIGHWAY IN THE MIDDLE OF RUSH HOUR TRAFFIC. SOMETHING NEEDS TO BE DONE ABOUT THESE PARTS AND FORD NEEDS TO LOOK INTO THE "EXTENDED WARRANTIES" THAT THEY ARE ALLOWING THEIR DEALERSHIPS TO SELL. I AM FURIOUS WITH MY DEALERSHIP RIGHT NOW AND HAVE A CALL INTO THE EAST COAST REGIONAL OFFICE REGARDING THIS SITUATION. *TR

AS I WAS DRIVING OUT OF MY NEIGHBORHOOD, I PRESSED THE ACCELERATOR, FELT A JERK, AND THEN NO RESPONSE FROM THE ACCELERATOR. THE CAR WAS JUST IN IDLE, WITH NOTHING I COULD DO. THE "WRENCH" LIGHT (CHECK ENGINE) CAME ON. LUCKILY, I COULD EASILY PULL OVER, SINCE I HAD NO CONTROL OVER MY SPEED, EXCEPT FOR BRAKING. I SHUT THE VEHICLE OFF, AND TURNED IT BACK ON, AND IT SEEMED TO BE FINE. 5 MINUTES LATER, DRIVING ON A FOUR LANE ROAD, THE ACCELERATOR WENT UNRESPONSIVE AGAIN. I WAS ABLE TO PULL ONTO A SIDE STREET WITH MY EXISTING MOMENTUM (THERE WAS NO SHOULDER OR SPACE ON THE MAIN ROAD). I CONTACTED MY DEALERSHIP AND MADE AN APPOINTMENT FOR THE NEXT DAY. THE NEXT MORNING, THE SAME THING OCCURRED WHILE DRIVING MY DAUGHTER TO SCHOOL (I WAS ABLE TO PULL OFF THE ROAD), AND AGAIN, ABOUT 50 FEET FROM THE FORD DEALERSHIP. AFTER EVALUATION, THEY SAID THAT THE THROTTLE BODY NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE PART WOULD TAKE 2-3 DAYS TO ORDER. THEY DID NOT OFFER ME A RENTAL TO USE INSTEAD OF MY UNSAFE VEHICLE, BUT AFTER I PUSHED, I WAS ABLE TO OBTAIN A RENTAL VEHICLE. I WAS NOT ABOUT TO SPEND 5 DAYS DRIVING A VEHICLE I COULD NOT TRUST TO BE RESPONSIVE WHEN I NEEDED IT. NUMEROUS OTHER FORD VEHICLES HAVE HAD ISSUES WITH THE ELECTRONIC THROTTLE BODY, RESULTING IN AN EXTENSION OF THE WARRANTY FOR THIS PART. AFTER DOING MORE RESEARCH, I BELIEVE FORD NEEDS TO ADD THE EDGE TO THIS LIST: HTTP://WWW.FORDPROBLEMS.COM/PROBLEMS/ELECTRONIC-THROTTLE-BODY.SHTML. *TR

GOING DOWN A BUSY ROAD AT 45MPH, MY 2011 FORD EDGE DID A SLIGHT JERK AND I LOST THE ABILITY TO ACCELERATE. I WAS NEARLY REAR ENDED! THIS INCIDENT HAS HAPPENED 3 TIMES IN 3 WEEKS. THEY OCCUR AT RANDOM AND WITHOUT WARNING. A WRENCH ICON WILL DISPLAY ON THE DASH WHEN IT OCCURS. I HAD TO COAST TO THE SHOULDER OF THE ROAD TO STOP SINCE I COULD NOT ACCELERATE, NOR DID THE MOTOR REV WHEN I PRESSED THE GAS. ONCE STOPPED ON SHOULDER, I CUT THE VEHICLE OFF AND BACK ON. IT TOOK LONGER THAN NORMAL TO CRANK. ONCE IT FINALLY STARTED UP I WAS ABLE TO CONTINUE DRIVING WITH NO PROBLEMS. I BROUGHT THE VEHICLE IN TO A FORD DEALER TO SEE WHAT THE ERROR MESSAGES READ AND THEY WERE UNABLE TO FIND ANY MESSAGES ON MY CAR. THIS FACT MADE IT SO I COULD NOT USE MY WARRANTY COVERAGE TO COVER REPAIR COST. THIS IS LUDICROUS! SINCE THIS ISSUE IS RECURRING AND ,AFTER RESEARCH, FOUND TO BE PREVALENT IN MANY FORD MODELS, FORD SHOULD STEP UP AND RECALL THIS ISSUE BUT THEY WON'T. THIS IS A DANGEROUS ISSUE AND COULD CAUSE INJURIES! *TR

ABOUT 35 MINUTES INTO MY TRIP, ON A VERY RURAL MISSOURI HIGHWAY, MY CAR HAD NO POWER ACCELERATING AND THE "WRENCH LIGHT" CAME ON. LUCKILY, A CHURCH PARKING LOT WAS NEAR, SO I COASTED THERE AND SHUT OFF THE CAR. I STARTED IT, IT WAS RUNNING OK AND THE LIGHT WENT OFF. I MADE THE REST OF MY TRIP. WHEN I GOT BACK HOME, I LEFT THE NEXT DAY ON AUGUST 6TH TO HEAD TO AURORA, MO TO HELP MY DAUGHTER. ABOUT 1 1/2 HOURS INTO MY TRIP, THE CAR DID EXACTLY THE SAME THING. NO POWER, WRENCH LIGHT ON. I WAS SO NERVOUS SINCE I WAS ON INTERSTATE 44 WITH HEAVY TRAFFIC. I GOT OFF THE INTERSTATE AND RESTARTED THE CAR AND MADE IT TO AURORA. I TOOK MY CAR TO THE FORD DEALER THERE. THEY CHECKED IT AND STATED NO CODES CAME UP SO THEY COULDN'T DO ANYTHING. I CALLED HUTCHESON FORD IN ST. JAMES (WHERE I PURCHASED EDGE) AND THEY WANTED ME TO BRING IT IN. JULY 28TH, I TOOK IT TO ST. JAMES WITH THE SAME RESULTS. NO CODES, NO HELP. I CAME HOME AND HAD A LOCAL MECHANIC DRIVE IT. HE DID AND SAID THERE WAS SOMETHING WRONG & TO CHECK THE INTERNET FOR COMMON PROBLEMS. I COULDN'T BELIEVE THE NUMBER OF PEOPLE THAT HAD THE SAME PROBLEM ON THEIR 2011 EDGE AND STATED IT WAS THROTTLE BODY. I DRIVE A LOT BY MYSELF ON ROADS WITH NO SHOULDER SO I HAD TO HAVE IT TAKEN CARE OF. TODAY I JUST PICKED UP THE EDGE WITH A NEW THROTTLE BODY OF $710. *TR

WHEN I ACCELERATE FROM A STOP POSITION, OR WHEN I AM APPROX. ONLY A FEW MILES PER HOUR THE VEHICLE WILL JUMP AND IT WILL FEEL THE VEHICLE JUMP AND IT FEELS LIKE I AM REAR-ENDED. I ASKED MY DEALER ABOUT THIS AND WAS TOLD THEY NEVER HEARD OF IT. IT WAS ALL OVER THE INTERNET. MANY, MANY OWNERS HAD THE SAME PROBLEM. I FOUND TSB 11-5-6 AND BROUGHT IT WITH ME TO MY DEALER AND HAD IT FIXED. AGAIN, THEY NEVER EVEN HEARD OF THE TSB, WHICH I DO NOT BELIEVE BECAUSE IT SEEMS LIKE IT IS SUCH A COMMON PROBLEM. THE VEHICLE SEEMED FINE BUT STARTED HAPPENING AGAIN. I EMAILED, AND SPOKE ON THE PHONE, TO THE DEARER AND TO FORD. THEY SPECIFIED THEY WOULD HAVE TO TAKE THE VEHICLE AND SEE WHAT IS HAPPENING. I EXPLAINED TO THEM THAT IT DOESN'T HAPPEN ALL THE TIME, JUST LIKE THE LAST TIME. THEY SAID IF THEY CAN REPRODUCE IT, THEY CAN'T FIX IT. PLUS I WOULD BE CHARGED FOR IT EVEN THOUGH IT HAS BEEN AN ONGOING PROBLEM. THERE IS NO WAY FOR THEM TO REPRODUCE IT AT WILL, AS IT ONLY HAPPENS ABOUT 1 TIME PER MONTH. WHEN IT DOES HAPPEN, IT IS VERY SCARY BECAUSE IT FEELS LIKE SOMEONE HIT YOU. I FOUND TSB 13-3-18 WHICH IS ANOTHER REPAIR FOR THE SAME PROBLEM. FORD TOLD ME IT DOESN'T PERTAIN TO ME. ACCORDING THE WORDING IN THE TSB, I AM NOT SO SURE. FORD IS FULLY AWARE OF THIS PROBLEM. IT IS ALL OVER THE INTERNET. THEY SHOULD BE OBLIGATED TO FIX IT. *TR

PE16012 · Door Ajar Warning Light Always On

Opened Sep 28, 2016 · Closed Mar 20, 2017

Status: closed (inferred from source dates) · Interior Lighting; Latches/locks/linkages; Latches/locks/linkages:doors:latch

The Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) opened this investigation on September 28, 2016 based on allegations that the door ajar light located on the instrument cluster stays on all of the time even when all doors are closed and fully latched on 2011-2013 model year Ford Edge vehicles. When the light is illuminated continuously, vehicle occupants cannot be certain if any of the doors are properly latched.Reported safety consequences as a result of this issue include doors opening while driving (because doors were initially not latched properly), doors cannot be locked while driving, and the interior dome lights staying on continuously. Ford data received from the Information Request letter corresponding to this investigation indicates the failures were caused by contamination of the electrical contacts on the switch located within each door latch that tells the vehicle if the door is open or closed. All four doors contain the same latch design and switch.According to Ford, the Body Control Module (BCM) monitors the position of the switch and continuously samples it to detect a state of change. After a closed door state is detected, a continuous wetting current designed to keep the electrical contacts clean is sent from the BCM to the switches as long as the BCM is active.Beginning with the 2011 model year Edge vehicles, a change in BCM strategy resulted in a reduction of the wetting current sent out to clean the switch contacts by more than 75%.Over time, this low level of current is not sufficient to keep the switch contacts clean and contamination build up causes them to fail as described above.During the course of this investigation, ODI has identified a total of 1,983 complaints related to the door ajar light.Of these complaints, 14 indicated that a door opened while driving.Twelve of the 14 door opening events were situations where an occupant of the vehicle (often a child) opened a passenger door because the doors were not locked. The remaining two complaints involved a door opening on its own because the driver was unaware that the door was unlatched. There were no accidents but one complainant reported that a shoulder injury was caused by the driver having to repeatedly slam the door in an effort to get the door ajar light to turn off. After reviewing all available data, an unreasonable risk to motor vehicle safety has not been identified. The door latches themselves continue to function properly, remaining securely latched until acted upon by a driver or passenger.Child safety locks on the rear doors continue to function properly and can be used to prevent the rear doors from opening via the inside door handles.Vehicle crashworthiness is not affected by the lock condition of the doors and all active safety systems continue to function normally even if the vehicle BCM believes one or more doors is open.In addition, no accidents or accident related injuries have been reported.A safety-related defect trend has not been identified at this time and further use of agency resources does not appear to be warranted.Accordingly, the investigation is closed. The closing of this investigation does not constitute a finding by NHTSA that a safety-related defect does not exist. The agency will monitor the issue and reserves the right to take future action if warranted by the circumstances.ODI numbers for the reports cited above are shown in the attached document.
