TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2012 BMW 528I. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE DRIVING AT AN UNKNOWN SPEED, THE VEHICLE STALLED WITH THE FUEL SUPPLY ERROR WARNING LIGHT ILLUMINATED. THE CONTACT WAS ABLE TO RESTART THE VEHICLE. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE FAILURE RECURRED AND THE CONTACT WAS UNABLE TO RESTART THE VEHICLE. TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2012 BMW 528I. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE FUEL SUPPLY WARNING INDICATOR ILLUMINATED WHILE DRIVING VARIOUS SPEEDS. AFTER THE WARNING, THE VEHICLE STALLED AND THEN ABRUPTLY STOPPED. THE VEHICLE WAS ABLE TO BE RESTARTED. THE CONTACT TOOK THE VEHICLE TO BMW OF TULSA (9702 S MEMORIAL DR, TULSA, OK 74133, (918) 663-4444) WHERE IT WAS DIAGNOSED THAT THE FUEL PUMP NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. ON TWO OCCASIONS VEHICLE SUDDENLY OFFERS AN ALERT AND STOPS ACCELERATING AND STALLS ON THE FREEWAY LEAVING US STRANDED. THE CAR WAS TAKEN TO THE BMW DEALER AND CORPORATE WAS MADE AWARE OF THE SITUATION AFTER THE FIRST INCIDENT AND DIDN'T FIX IT. THEY KEPT IT FOR ABOUT APPROX10 DAYS AND ONLY REPLACED THE BATTERY. THREE WEEKS LATER THE SECOND INCIDENT HAPPENED. THIS TIME WE TOOK A PICTURE OF THE ALERT ON DASH SCREEN WHICH SAID FUEL SUPPLY PROBLEM. THEY REPLACED THE FUEL PUMP BUT OBVIOUSLY THEIR PARTS ARE FAULTY. THEY DIDN'T CONVEY TO ME THAT THEY FIXED THE PROBLEM WITH THE PUMP BUT ONLY THAT THEY PUT IN A NEW ONE. THE CAR PLACED US IN LIFE THREATENING SITUATIONS AND WE ARE NOT SECURE DRIVING IT. I ASKED FOR BMW TO REACQUIRE THE VEHICLE BUT THEY REFUSED. THERE IS NO GUARANTEE THE CAR WILL NOT SO THE SAME THING. I IMAGINE THOUSANDS OF CUSTOMERS HAVE EXPERIENCED THE SAME PROBLEM YET ,BMW DIDN'T CATCH AND DID MY CAR AFTER THE FIRST INCIDENT. WHILE DRIVING IN METRO DETROIT LAST NIGHT MY 2012 BMW 528I XDRIVE SUDDENLY FLASHED A "FUEL SYSTEM MALFUNCTION" MESSAGE, LURCHED AND CAME TO A DEAD STOP JUST PAST THE INTERSECTION OF NOVI ROAD AND 10 MILE. I WAS TWO MILES FROM THE EXPRESSWAY AND MY WIFE AND CHILDREN WERE WITH ME IN THE CAR. HAD I MADE IT TO I-96 - JUST TWO MILES UP THE ROAD - AND THIS HAPPENED, WE VERY LIKELY WOULD HAVE BEEN INVOLVED IN A MAJOR ACCIDENT. POLICE WERE CALLED BECAUSE I WAS IN THE MIDDLE OF THE STREET. THE CAR WAS ELECTRONICALLY LOCKED. I COULD NOT PUT THE CAR IN NEUTRAL TO MOVE IT OUT OF THE ROADWAY. BMW SERVICE FINALLY MANAGED TO GET THE CAR TOWED 8 HOURS LATER BECAUSE FEW TOW TRUCKS LACKED THE EQUIPMENT NEEDED TO MOVE THE CAR WITHOUT DAMAGE. THERE IS NO MANUAL OVERRIDE TO ALLOW YOU TO PUT THE CAR IN NEUTRAL, IT CAN ONLY BE ACCESSED BY A SERVICE TECH UNDERNEATH THE CAR. MY SERVICE ADVISOR WAS WELL AWARE OF THE PROBLEM. THIS IS A MAJOR HAZARD AND HUGE DESIGN FLAW. THERE IS NO MECHANICAL LINKAGE TO EITHER THE START/STOP BUTTON OR THE SHIFTER. IT'S ALL ELECTRONICALLY CONTROLLED. An improperly sealed electrical connector on the water pump may be exposed to water and short circuit.

Consequence & remedy

Consequence: An electrical short increases the risk of a fire.

Remedy: Dealers will inspect and replace the water pump and plug connector as necessary, and install a protective shield, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed on March 28, 2025. Owners may contact BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417.

The affected vehicles have in-tank fuel pumps that may have insufficiently crimped wire contacts.

Consequence & remedy

Consequence: The loose wires may cause the connector to melt, resulting in a fuel leak. Additionally, the fuel pump may stop working, possibly causing an engine stall and increase the risk of a crash.

Remedy: BMW will notify owners, and dealers will replace the fuel pump module, free of charge. The recall began February 2017. Owners may contact BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417.

Due to insufficient lubrication, the vacuum pump that supplies brake power assistance may fail. Note: This recall is an expansion of recall 13V-454.

Consequence: A failure of the brake vacuum pump results in a reduction in braking power that could increase the risk of a crash.

In a letter dated September 26, 2013, BMW Group submitted a safety recall notice to NHTSA identifying a defect condition in the vacuum pump oil supply that may result in loss of power assist braking in 76,191 model year (MY) 2012 through 2014 BMW 3-Series, 5-Series, X1 SAV, X3 SAV, and Z4 vehicles equipped with 4-cylinder engines (NHTSA Recall 13V-454).According to BMW, movement of the seal disk within the camshaft may result in blocking of the oil supply to the vacuum pump, resulting in improper pump operation and loss of power assist braking.On July 11, 2013, BMW initiated a change to the camshaft geometry that prevented the seal disk from blocking the oil port.BMW has not received any braking complaints related to loss of power assist after the design change was implemented in production.The owners of all affected vehicles will be contacted by mail and asked to take their vehicle to a BMW dealer who will install a locking ring into the camshaft to keep the seal disk in its proper location.BMW expects to begin dealer and owner notification in November 2013 and complete dealer and owner notification in December when the remedy is expected to be available.Based on the actions taken by BMW, this investigation is closed.
