My power steering started out notchy and now it’s actually sticking in some cases and I can hear noises when I turn the steering wheel when I’m at a stop. The problem started after my first oil change around 6500 miles and it’s actually getting worse where I can feel it more and more. I told the dealer and they said they have no fix for the problem with no updated parts and then I should complain on this website to make it known.

When I'd try to make small corrections to keep the car in the center of the lane, I'd apply pressure and get nothing. Then I'd apply more pressure and the wheel would "pop" and I'd get more correction than I wanted. I thought that was odd, so I googled it and found this thread. Sticky Integra steering; Starting feeling the steering wheel "stick", more prominent on freeways after driving straight. The wheel doesn't feel smooth when trying to adjust smaller turns. It feels like the wheel locked or stuck in a notch. But after moving it, it becomes smooth again before not turning the wheel again. This has been a continuous problem that frequently happens on the highways. It is particularly dangerous as it takes away driver attention and potentially causing crash as the steering needs to freed occasionally!

Around the 8,000 mile mark, a problem with “sticky/jerky” steering appeared. The problem is much more noticeable at speeds over 50 mph, but it can also be felt at lower speeds. The steering wheel does not rotate smoothly. Instead, it constantly gets stuck at various spots, and it requires additional driver force to angle it to the desired position. This constant adjustment causes the car to move in a noticeable zig zag fashion, and it much more apparent at highway speeds due to the amount of distance covered per every steering adjustment. At times, it feel dangerous since you are constantly fighting to stay within your lane. Countless reports have surfaced online, and it seems to be affecting the Acura Integra lineup as well as the 11th generation Honda Civic lineup. The flaw appears to be with a faulty worn gear in the steering shaft.

Sticky steering problem. The steering wheel will randomly require significant effort to move left or right the first 5 to 10 degrees. This results in uncommanded drifting into other lanes. When going in a straight line at interstate speeds, the steering wheel will randomly pick 5 to 10 degrees left or right as the new center point and require significant effort to override. When this randomly occurs, "sticky steering" overrides BOTH lane keep assist and road departure mitigation as they think the action has been manually commanded.

Experiencing "sticky steering". While driving highway speeds, common corrections to steering randomly require an extra effort due to a slight "sticky" feel on the steering wheel. Applying the extra force suddenly releases it, but it is concerning since you have to be ready to re-correct in case you applied more effort than needed (otherwise you can be in the risk of dangerously invading another lane). I would definitely consider this a drive safety risk. Additional Observations: - It has been more noticeable also in cold weather, up to the point that it also presents itself at low street speeds while doing turns. - Have been noticing a combination of "sticky" and "too loose" steering. According to dealer, there is nothing worn or loose in the steering components, nor an alignment or balancing issues on wheels/tires. - As the mileage increases, the issue becomes more noticeable and more concerning. - Started to experience this since around 9k miles in the odometer.

The steering wheel is sticky while driving at highway speeds and has significant resistance on speeds over 45 miles per hour. The car does not feel safe to drive during highway speeds, as it requires overcorrection. The Acura dealership has confirmed that the steering rack needs to be replaced and is significantly back ordered. There was no warning of this issue with any lamps, messages or vehicle systems at any point. The problem occurred in the summer of 2023, when the vehicle had approximately 3000 miles.

This vehicle has what's been described as "sticky steering". At highway speeds and going straight a steering wheel movement (such as repositioning in your lane) sticks on straight before driver's slight pressure on the wheel overcomes the "stickyness" and the car then responds to driver's steering command. Not sure if this defect is a safety problem but anything unusual in the steering mechanism concerns me. Is something in the steering mechanism in the process of failing? Am I about to lose control of the car? I've been driving for 62 years and never encountered anything like this Problem has been reproduced by the dealer.

Honda (American Honda Motor Co.) is recalling certain 2023-2025 Acura Integra, Civic Type R, CR-V Hybrid, CR-V, HR-V, 2022-2025 Civic, Civic Hatchback, 2024-2025 Acura Integra Type S, 2025 CR-V Fuel Cell EV, Civic Hybrid, and Civic Hatchback Hybrid vehicles. The steering gearbox assembly may have been manufactured incorrectly, which can cause excessive internal friction and lead to difficulty steering the vehicle.

Consequence & remedy

Consequence: Difficulty steering can increase the risk of a crash.

Remedy: Dealers will replace the worm gear spring and redistribute or add grease as necessary, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed November 18, 2024. Owners may contact Honda Customer Service at 1-888-234-2138. Honda's numbers for this recall are SJS, MJU, QJT and VJV.

Honda (America Honda Motor Co.) is recalling certain 2023 Civic, Acura RDX, Acura Integra, and 2022 Honda Accord vehicles. A ball valve in the vehicle stability assist (VSA) modulator may leak brake fluid, which can result in unintended vehicle movement when the brake hold feature is engaged or an unexpected increase in brake pedal travel.

Consequence & remedy

Consequence: Unintended vehicle movement or an unexpected increase in brake pedal travel can increase the risk of a crash or injury.

Remedy: Dealers will replace the VSA modulator, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed July 24, 2023. Owners may contact Honda customer service at 1-888-234-2138. Honda's numbers for this recall are OEJ, XEK, AEY, XEX and OEW.

EA23003 · Momentary Increased Steering Effort

On November 29, 2023, the Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) opened this Engineering Analysis (EA23003) to assess allegations of momentary increase in steering effort in model years (MY) 2022-2023 Honda Civic, 2023MY Honda CR-V, and 2023MY Acura Integra vehicles (subject vehicles). The complaints received by ODI alleged that the subject vehicles experienced a momentary increase in required steering effort (described as “sticky steering”) occurring mostly at highway speeds after driving for an extended amount of time; these complaints could not be duplicated during dealer service technicians’ quick test drives.  The complaints had been received over the previous two years with most occurring with low vehicle mileage. The steering gear of these vehicles is aided by an electrical power assist unit. This power assist unit inputs force on the steering rack via a worm gear and worm wheel assembly. During PE23005, Honda stated this condition of momentary increase in steering effort occurs due to two factors within this power assist unit. First, during manufacturing, the steering worm wheel goes through annealing and component conditioning processes. These processes cause internal stress and strain within the steering worm  wheel. This strain is slowly released over the first few months of the vehicle life. Over time, the released strain causes deformation of the teeth on the worm wheel, causing the worm gear to catch on the worm wheel. This catching results in the driver’s momentary increased steering effort. Second, the manufacturing process did not guarantee consistent grease application and, therefore, some subject vehicles received insufficient grease which contributed to the momentary increase in steering effort. During EA23003, ODI further analyzed the potential safety related consequences of the momentary increase in steering effort. NHTSA’s Vehicle Research and Test Center (VRTC) duplicated the allegations of increased steering effort. In addition, VRTC discovered the steering worm wheel and worm gear tended to push grease out of the meshing area, resulting in large amounts of grease resting on top of the worm wheel. Information Request responses collected and reviewed by ODI showed Honda had also discovered this additional root cause during NHTSA’s EA. In addition, Honda discovered the preload of the worm wheel gear spring was set too high, increasing the gear slide load and resulting in higher friction and increased torque fluctuation when steering. The number of consumer complaints made to ODI continued to increase with the expansion of scope from the PE to the EA. Additionally, during EA23003, ODI received ten complaints alleging a crash, in addition to the 13 complaints ODI had received as of the time it opened EA23003. In total, 23 crashes have been reported to ODI due to this alleged defect. On October 3, 2024, Honda filed NHTSA Recall No. 24V-744 to address this defect. The recall will provide consumers with a new steering worm wheel gear spring with a decreased load. Additionally, dealerships will add additional grease and relocate any grease sitting on top of the worm wheel back into the meshing area. The scope of this recall includes all Honda vehicles that were manufactured with this specific improperly produced steering worm wheel and spring. In view of the recall action being taken by Honda, ODI is closing EA23003. NHTSA reserves the right to take additional action if warranted by future circumstances.
