While shifting into and out of 3rd gear it began to clunk and now is almost useless. Yamaha is aware that they had a defective gears and replaced the gears with a new kit part number. They refuse to replace the parts and do the repair at their cost well knowing it is a manufacturing defect and can cause serious damage to the motor and transmission This motorcycle only has 13000 miles and the transmission is to the point of being dangerous to ride, if even ridable at all. Their are so many reports of this same issue, Yamaha should recall these motorcycles and repair this manufacturing defect their cost before someone gets killed.

I WAS RIDING HOME FROM COLLEGE AND I DOWN SHIFTED FROM 4TH GEAR TO THIRD AND HEARD A NOISE AND THE BIKE STALLED. I WAS ABLE TO GET IT INTO NEUTRAL AND IT STARTED BACK UP AGAIN HOWEVER IF I SHIFT INTO THIRD IT MAKES A HORRIBLE TAPPING NOISE. SO, I HAVE BEEN RIDING THE BIKE WITHOUT USING 3RD GEAR. I AM A DISABLED VETERAN WHO LIVES ON VERY LITTLE VET BENEFITS WHICH DO NOT ALLOW FOR ME TO PAY FOR A TOP END REBUILD WHICH IS REQUIRED TO CHANGE THE GEAR. NOR CAN I PAY FOR YAMAHAS NEW THIRD GEAR ( WHICH IS NOT THE SAME PART OR PART # THAT THE BIKE WAS ORIGINALLY BUILT WITH ) THAT THEY CAME UP WITH TO FIX THE PROBLEM. *TR

3RD GEAR MAKES A LOT OF NOISE EVEN IN IDLE. PEOPLE ON LINE SAY IT'S A DEFECTIVE GEAR PIN THAT YAMAHA KNOWS ABOUT BUT WON'T RECALL.

ON MARCH 21ST OF 2012, AROUND 2PM, I LEFT MY HOUSE TO HEAD TO WORK. WHEN I APPROACHED THE STOP LIGHT (RED) RIGHT OFF MCKINLEY BRIDGE ON MISSOURI SIDE, I DOWN SHIFTED FROM 4TH TO 3RD GEAR WHEN I NOTICED THE BIKE LUNGED FORWARD A BIT AND STARTED MAKING A GRINDING NOISE. THE NOISE SOUNDS LIKE THE BELT IS NOT GRABBING ONTO THE SPROCKET OR SOMETHING LIKE THAT. I WAS TOLD THAT THERE IS ALOT OF ROADLINER'S AND STRATOLINERS XV1900'S HAS THIS PROBLEM. THE PROBLEM IS WITH THE 3RD GEAR PINION P/N 1D7-17131-01-00. YAMAHA KNOWS ABOUT THIS PROBLEM WITH THE MODEL BIKE IN QUESTION BUT HAS NOT HAD A RECALL ON THIS PART YET. I WAS TOLD THAT THIS PROBLEM COULD CAUSE A CATASTROPHIC CRASH FROM THE TRANSMISSION LOCKING UP AT HIGH SPEEDS. THE REPLACEMENT PART HAS A NEW P/N (99999-03864.00). *TR
