2 OUT OF 5 BOLTS BROKE THAT HOLD THE REAR SPROCKET IN PLACE. ONE OF THE BOLT HEADS DID SIGNIFICANT DAMAGE TO THE FLYWHEEL AND EVEN BENT THE END OF THE SWINGARM. SOME HAVE STATED THAT THIS IS NOT UNCOMMON AND WAS LIKELY DUE TO THE POWDER-COATING ON THE SPROCKET WEARING OFF, ALLOWING ENOUGH PLAY/MOVEMENT TO RESULT IN THIS FAILURE. THE MOTORCYCLE IS COMPLETELY STOCK, HAS HAD NO MODIFICATIONS, AND THE REAR TIRE/WHEEL HAS NEVER BEEN OFF THE MOTORCYCLE. FORTUNATELY, THIS FAILURE HAPPENED ON A RIDE OF LESS THAN 5 MILES ON LOCAL ROADS. IF THIS WOULD'VE HAPPENED ON A LONGER RIDE AT SPEED AND ANY OF THE OTHER 3 BOLTS BROKE, IT COULD'VE RESULTED IN A CRASH.
Polaris is recalling certain model year 2012-2013 Victory motorcycles manufactured from January 3, 2012, through August 15, 2012. A torqueing procedure may have been missed on some throttle cable retention nuts. On certain motorcycles, the throttle cable retention nuts for either the pull or push throttle cable may have not been torqued correctly.
Consequence & remedy
Consequence: If the torqueing is missed and the retention nuts are loose, the retention nuts closest to the throttle body can become dislodged and interfere with the throttle function, increasing the risk of a crash.
Remedy: Victory will notify owners and dealers will correctly torque the fasteners free of charge. The safety recall began on October 4, 2012. Owners may contact Victory consumer service department by calling 1-888-704-5290.
