Power lift-gate lowered on its own as I was putting groceries in the back compartment. My hands were nowhere near the button you press to lower the lift-gate. If I hadn't quickly ducked out of the way, I could have been seriously injured or killed. This has never happened before. Now I'm reluctant to use the back compartment for fear the lift-gate may lower on its own again. This incident happened this morning in a Target parking lot about 9:30 AM.

The contact was also informed by the dealer that the failure was a result of the vehicle's design and that no other repairs could be made to address the failure. The contact owns a 2022 Toyota Rav4. The contact stated that while rolling down the driver's side window, the window made an abnormal sound. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, who removed plastic debris and tightened unknown screws on the driver's side door; however, the failure recurred. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and informed the contact that it was a common failure in similar vehicles. The failure mileage was approximately 600.
Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing (Toyota) is recalling certain 2022 Rav4, Rav4 Hybrid, and Rav4 Prime vehicles. The front passenger seat may have been assembled with interference between internal parts that may cause the Occupant Classification System (OCS) sensor to incorrectly detect the occupant. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 208, "Occupant Crash Protection."
Consequence & remedy
Consequence: Incorrect detection of an occupant may result in improper air bag deployment during a crash, increasing the risk of injury.
Remedy: Dealers will inspect and repair the front passenger seat, as necessary, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed September 2, 2022. Owners may contact Toyota's customer service at 1-800-331-4331. Toyota's number for this recall is 22TA08.
