I AM THE OWNER OF A 2008 RAV4. I WAS TRAVELING WITH CRUISE CONTROL AT 50 MPH AS I APPROACHED A DOWN GRADE TOWARD A TRAFFIC LIGHT I MANUALLY TOOK THE CAR OUT OF CRUISE CONTROL EXPECTING TO SLOW SOME. I REALIZED THAT I NEEDED TO SLOW MORE AND APPLIED THE BRAKE PEDAL. HOWEVER, I COULD FEEL THE CAR FIGHTING THE BRAKES. I PUT THE CAR INTO NEUTRAL AND WAS ABLE TO STOP FOR THE LIGHTS. WHEN I DID THIS THE ENGINE WAS RACING WHILE STOPPED. WHEN THE LIGHT CHANGED I PUT THE RACING ENGINE INTO DRIVE. I JERKED FORWARD AND HAS BEEN OK SINCE. I REPORTED THIS TO THE DEALER. I WAS TOLD THAT ANOTHER OWNER OF THE SAME YEAR AND MODEL REPORTED A SIMILAR EVENT THAT DAY. THIS IS DIFFERENT THAN THE RUNAWAY CARS REPORTED IN THE NEWS, AS THE CAR DID NOT ACCELERATE TO MAX SPEED. TOYOTA SEEMS NOT TO BE RESPONDING TO CARS MADE BEFORE 2009. I THINK THIS IS A COMPUTER PROBLEM WHERE THE CRUISE CONTROL DID NOT TURN OFF AND THE STEPPING ON THE BRAKES DID NOT TAKE IT OUT OF CRUISE CONTROL EITHER. ON FEB 19 I REPORTED THIS TO THE TOYOTA DEALER AND WAS TOLD THAT ANOTHER PERSON HAD REPORTED THIS SAME TYPE OF THING THAT SAME DAY. THEY LOOK FOR ERROR CODES BUT FOUND NONE. *TR

ON FEB. 13TH 2010 I EXPERIENCED A NEAR ACCIDENT DUE TO AN UNINTENDED SUDDEN ACCELERATION ON A 2008 TOYOTA RAV4. I INITIALLY RELEASED BRAKE AND HIT IT AGAIN AND VEHICLE STOPPED JUST SHORT OF A TOLL BOOTH BARRICADE. I LATER INVESTIGATED AND UPON RELATED SEARCH ON INTERNET CAME ACROSS THE SUDDEN UNINTENDED ACCELERATION PROBLEM. IN MY CASE I WAS PAYING A TOLL WHEN CAR ACCELERATED, I BELIEVE I HIT THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL AND BRAKE AT SAME TIME. I AM VERY CONCERNED THAT THE NHTSA HAS NOT MANDATED A BRAKE OVERRIDE FOR ALL SMALL VEHICLES WHERE PEDAL ERROR CAN EASILY OCCUR. I BELIEVE THE MAJORITY OF SUA INCIDENTS I HAVE LOOKED AT THAT SERIOUS (SUDDEN), THAT PEDAL ERROR IS BEING UNDER REPORTED AS MOST DRIVERS DENY IT. I AM NOT. BUT IS SERIOUS HUMAN FACTORS ISSUE IN ALL SMALL CARS DRIVEN BY LARGE AMERICANS. *TR

REPAIRS ARE: BRAKE SWITCH REPLACEMENT, IGY RELAY REPLACMENT. IN ADDITION THE CRUISE CONTROL WOULD NOT FUNCTION AND SOMETIMES THE TRANSMISSION WOULD BE STUCK IN REVERSE. UNABLE TO SHIFT OUT OF THIS GEAR POSITION. A LOCAL MECHANIC FOUND THE PROBLEM IN THAT THE CONNECTIONS IN THE WIRING HARNESS ARE FILLED WITH WATER. HE WAS UNABLE TO DETERMINE HOW THE WATER GOT THERE. A FEW DAYS LATER, THE SAME PROBLEM RETURNED.. I AM WRITING TO SHARE WITH YOU MY CONCERN OF THE ELECTRONIC PROBLEMS WITH THE 2008 RAV4 FROM TOYOTA. TOWN TOYOTA SERVICE MANAGER, WENATCHEE, WA TOLD US NOT TO WORRY ABOUTIT AS IT IS STILL SAFE TO DRIVEWITH ABS, BRAKE, AND EGF LIGHTS ILLUMINATED. I DID CONTACT TOYOTA (VIA EMAI) BUT NO RESPONSE. I QUESTION THE VALIDITY OF THAT STATEMENT IN LIGHT OF RECENT RECALL NEWS AND THOUGHT YOU SHOULD KNOW. *TR

I HAVE A 2008 RAV4, IT HAS BEEN ACCELERATING ON A SMALL SCALE FOR THE LAST THREE MONTHS. I TOOK IT IN TO MY DEALER AND WAS TOLD THAT MY PARTS WERE MADE IN JAPAN AND NOT NORTH AMERICA, AND THEY FOUND NOTHING. ABOUT A WEEK LATER MY HUSBAND, DAUGHTER-IN-LAW AND GRANDDAUGHTER WERE HEADED TO A HOCKEY GAME. I WAS DRIVING, WE WERE COMING UP ON A RED LIGHT WHEN I STARTED TO APPLY THE BRAKES, AT THE SAME TIME THE VEHICLE STARTED TO ACCELERATE. THIS WAS MUCH MORE THAN HAD HAPPENED BEFORE. I STOOD ON THE BRAKE AND FLEW THROUGH THE REDLIGHT, I SCREAMED FOR MY HUSBAND TO PUT IT IN NEUTRAL, HE HAD TROUBLE DOING SO. I THOUGHT WE WERE ALL DEAD. THE PERSON THAT HAD THE GREEN LIGHT MUST HAVE SEEN WE WERE HAVING A PROBLEM, AS HE STOPPED TO LET US RACE THROUGH. IT SLOWED AFTER A BIT, AND WENT BACK TO NORMAL. WHEN WE WERE ACCELERATING I NOTICED THE RPMS TO BE OVER 3, I COULDN'T WATCH IT THAT CLOSELY FOR FEAR I WOULD COMPLETELY LOSE CONTROL OF THE VEHICLE. WE RETURNED THE VEHICLE TO THE DEALER AND WAS TOLD THAT WE WOULD HAVE TO CALL CALIFORNIA AND PUT IN A COMPLAINT. WE DID THAT AND WERE GIVEN A CASE NUMBER. AFTER FOUR DAYS OF NO RETURN CALL WE CALLED THE DEALER AND ASKED FOR AN UPDATE AS TO WHAT WOULD GO ON NOW. THEY SAID THAT SOMEONE WOULD HAVE TO COME AND INSPECT THE VEHICLE, I ASKED IF WE COULD HAVE A LOANER AND I WAS TOLD NOT UNTIL TOYOTA DECIDES THERE IS A PROBLEM. MY CAR HAS BEEN IN THE DEALERS HANDS FOR A WEEK TODAY AND WE HAVE NO CAR. ALTHOUGH TOYOTA REPS HAVE BEEN PLEASANT, WE DON'T FEEL THAT THEY REALLY KNOW WHAT IS GOING ON. WE HAVE BEEN TOLD THAT IT WILL BE INSPECTED TOMORROW. WE WILL WAIT FOR THE CALL, BUT WILL NOT RECEIVE THE CAR UNTIL IT IS FIXED AND THERE IS A GUARANTEE THAT IT WON'T DO IT AGAIN. I WILL NOT KILL MYSELF OR ANYONE ELSE BECAUSE OF THIS ISSUE. *TR

THIS IS TYPICALLY OCCURRING AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS OR LIGHT ACCELERATION ABOVE ~25MPH. THIS HAS BEEN OCCURRING SINCE RIGHT AFTER WE PURCHASED THE VEHICLE IN OCTOBER 2008. DEALER COULD NOT VERIFY PROBLEM AND NO ERROR CODES WERE FOUND. THE ANTI-SKID CONTROL COMES ON RANDOMLY AND APPLIED THE BRAKES ALSO, USUALLY WHILE VEHICLE IS STOPPED. WHEN FOOT IS REMOVED FROM BRAKE, VEHICLE STAYS STOPPED UNTIL ACCELERATOR IS PUSH AND THEN SYSTEM RELEASES THE BRAKES AND ANTI-SKID LIGHT GOES OUT. DEALER COULD NOT FIND ANY ERROR CODES FOR THIS EITHER. THIS IS A VEHICLE WITH A VIN NUMBER BEGINNING WITH J, WHICH HAS BEEN EXCLUDED FROM RECENT RECALLS. *TR

Aug 12, 2016

Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing (Toyota) is recalling certain model year 2006-2011 Toyota RAV4 vehicles manufactured October 31, 2005, to September 7, 2010, and 2010 Lexus HS250h vehicles manufactured July 6, 2009, to August 26, 2010. The affected vehicles have rear suspension arms (rear tie rods) with adjusting lock nuts that may have been improperly tightened after servicing. As a result of being loose, the arm may have thread damage and may rust, possibly leading to the failure of the arm and an abrupt change in the vehicle's alignment.

Consequence & remedy

Consequence: Failure of the rear tie rod could cause a loss of vehicle control, increasing the risk of a crash.

Remedy: Toyota will notify owners and dealers will replace both rear suspension arms and encapsulate the locknuts, free of charge. The recall began on September 30, 2016. Owners may contact Toyota customer service at 1-800-331-4331. Toyota's numbers for this recall are G0V for Toyota vehicles and GLK for Lexus vehicles. Note: This recall supersedes recall 13V-383, in which some vehicles were only inspected, sealed, and did not have both arms replaced. The affected vehicles were previously recalled under 13V-383, but did not have both rear suspension arms replaced at that time. Those vehicles need to have both arms replaced as part of this recall remedy.

Apr 9, 2014

Toyota is recalling certain model year 2006-2008 RAV4, 2006-2010 Yaris, 2008-2010 Highlander, and 2009-2010 Tacoma, Corolla, Corolla Matrix and General Motors Pontiac Vibe vehicles. In the affected vehicles, the steering column assembly contains electrical connections to the driver's airbag module housed in a spiral cable assembly, which includes a Flexible Flat Cable (FFC). Due to the shape and location of the FFC's retainer, the FFC could become damaged when the steering wheel is turned.

Consequence & remedy

Consequence: If the FFC is damaged, connectivity to the driver's air bag module could be lost and the air bag deactivated. The failure of the driver's air bag to deploy in the event of a crash that typically necessitates deployment increases the risk of injury to the driver.

Remedy: Toyota will notify the Toyota vehicle owners, and General Motors will notify the Pontiac Vibe owners. Toyota sent owners an interim notification letter in May 2014 to advise owners of the recall. Toyota will mail owners a second letter when remedy parts are available. General Motors sent Pontiac Vibe owners an Interim letter on June 20, 2014 notifying them that parts are currently unavailable. General Motors sent notices to the Pontiac Vibe owners on September 15, 2014, that a remedy is available. The recall began on October 27, 2014. Owners may contact Toyota at 1-800-331-4331. Owners may contact General Motors at 1-800-762-2737.

Aug 28, 2013

Toyota is recalling certain model year 2006 through 2011 RAV4 and 2010 Lexus HS250h passenger vehicles manufactured from October 2005 through September 2010. If the nuts for adjusting the rear wheel alignment are improperly tightened during service, the rear suspension arm (rear tie rod) may develop unwanted movement and rust leading to thread damage and eventual failure. Failure of the rear tie rod will cause an abrupt change in the vehicle's alignment.

Consequence & remedy

Consequence: Failure of the rear tie rod could cause a loss of vehicle control, increasing the risk of a crash.

Remedy: Toyota will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the tie rods and replace any that have rust or corrosion on the alignment adjustment threads. All of the rear tie rods will then be encased in an epoxy to prevent future environmental damage. Due to limitations in parts, the recall remedy will be launched in phases from September 2013 through mid-April 2014. All owners will receive notification of the recall, with most receiving second notifications when parts are available in their area. IMPORTANT: This recall supersedes Toyota and Lexus recall 12V-373. All vehicles that have been inspected and remedied under the previous recall need to be re-inspected and have the appropriate remedy applied.

Toyota is recalling certain model year 2007-2009 Camry, Camry Hybrid, RAV4, Corolla, Corolla Matrix, Tundra, Sequoia, Highlander, Highlander Hybrid, Yaris, Scion xB, Scion xD and Pontiac Vibe vehicles. The power window master switch assemblies in some of these vehicles were built using a less precise process for lubricating the internal components of the switch assemblies. Irregularities in this lubrication process may cause the power window master switch assemblies to malfunction and overheat.

Consequence & remedy

Consequence: If the switch overheats, it may melt, possibly resulting in a fire.

Remedy: Toyota will notify its owners, and dealers will inspect the switch and apply a special grease that inhibits heat build up or replace any switch damaged by the defect, free of charge. Toyota owners that experience a problem with a switch should not attempt to make repairs, but should contact their Toyota dealer or the Toyota Customer Experience Center at 1-800-331-4331. General Motors will contact the Pontiac Vibe owners affected by this recall and GM dealers will inspect and repair switches as necessary. Those owners may contact Pontiac Customer Care at 1-800-762-2737.

Status: closed (inferred from source dates) · Suspension; Suspension:rear

In a letter dated August 1, 2012 Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing North America, Inc. (Toyota) submitted a Defect Information Report (NHTSA Recall No. 12V-373) to the NHTSA identifying a safety defect regarding possible separation of the Rear Suspension Arm No. 1 Assembly (arm) at the threaded portion (shaft and turn buckle) of the component in MY 2006 through MY 2011 Toyota RAV4 vehicles built from October 2005 through September 2010 and in MY 2010 Lexus HS250h vehicles manufactured from July 2009 through August 2010.According to Toyota, if the adjustment nuts for the rear wheel alignment are improperly tightened when alignment is performed in service, backlash may develop at the threaded portion of the arm, followed by rust formation. The threads may then wear causing the arm to separate, which may result in a loss of vehicle control. In analysis of both Vehicle Owner Questionnaire (VOQ) data submitted to the Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) and consumer complaint data submitted to Toyota, ODI identified 131 non-duplicative reports alleging failure of the subject rear suspension arm (Note:some of the complaints and related service records refer to the arm as a rear tie rod).Six of the complainants allege the failure resulted in some loss of vehicle control. For purposes of this analysis, loss of control events involve alleged complete or partial departure from the intended lane of travel. An additional four complaints reported difficulty maintaining control of the vehicle when the arm failed.Recalled vehicles will be inspected for proper torque of the adjustment nuts and replaced as necessary. In addition, Toyota will take several actions to reduce the potential for improper torque in future alignment procedures. This includes:(1) providing proper tightening sequence and torque specification information to two major wheel alignment equipment manufacturers, who would disseminate the information to alignment shops using their equipment; (2) installation of a clip on each arm with an instructional label showing proper tightening sequence and torque specification (the clip must be removed to perform a wheel alignment); (3) installation of additional labels on the front and back vertical surfaces of the Rear Suspension Arm No. 2 assemblies; and (4) providing an instruction booklet to owners to place in the glove box. This investigation is closed.
