2007 TOYOTA CAMRY. INITIALLY WHEN THE CAR WAS TURNED ON THE BRAKE LIGHT, AND ABS LIGHT WOULD COME ON ALONG WITH THE TACHOMETER, SPEEDOMETER WOULD BEGIN RACING WHILE IN PARK. AT THIS TIME THE ENGINE COOLING SYSTEM WOULD GO DOWN TO "C" THIS HAPPENED HALF A DOZEN TIMES AND IT WAS TAKEN TO TOYOTA DEALERS. I SPENT 618.00 FOR REPAIRS AND I WAS TOLD THE CAR WAS FIXED. TOYOTA DEALER ALSO STATED I WAS ABLE TO DRIVE THE CAR AND THERE WOULD BE NO PROBLEMS. AFTER SPENDING MONEY FOR REPAIRS WITHIN 24 HOURS THE PROBLEM BEGAN AGAIN. NOW THIS TIME NOT ONLY WHEN YOU WERE IN PARK WOULD THE LIGHTS COME ON THE BEGAN COMING ON WHILE I WAS DRIVING. SO I COULD NOT TELL WHAT SPEEDS I WAS DOING AND UNABLE TO TELL IF I HAD BRAKES WHEN THE LIGHT CAME ON. SO IT WAS TAKEN BACK TO THE SAME DEALERSHIP AND THIS TIME THEY WANT TO REPLACE SKID CONTROL ECU/ACTUATOR PER TECH LINE AND WANT ME TO SPEND OVER 2000.00 TO FIX THE PROBLEM EVEN THOUGH I HAVE A BILL OF SALE THAT STATES PROBLEM WAS FIXED JUST DAYS BEFORE. *TR

THE DIAGNOSIS WAS THE DIGITAL THROTTLE WAS BAD. YOU COULD PUSH THE PEDDEL ALL THE WAY TO THE FLOOR WITH NO RESPONSE. IMAGINE BEING OUT ON THE INTERSTATE AND THIS HAPPENS. I ONLY HAVE 84,500 ON THIS CAR AND THIS HAPPENS. VERY CONCENED ABOUT THIS ON THE CAMRY. THERE SHOULD BE A RECALL ON THIS AS WELL. DIAGNOSIS CHECK WAS RAN AND THE REPAIR SHOP WILL BE GLAD TO PROVIDE ANY INFORMATION YOU MAY NEED. JUST GLAD THAT I WAS NOT KILLED. *TR

ONE OF TWO ELECTRONIC ACCELERATOR POSITION SENSORS MALFUNCTIONED ON MY 2002 TOYOTA CAMRY. I EXPERIENCED A SLUGGISH RESPONSE TO PEDAL ACTION (I.E. I HAD TO PUSH THE PEDAL FARTHER THAN NORMAL TO GAIN ANY ACCELERATION - CHECK ENGINE LIGHT WAS ALSO ILLUMINATED). I IMMEDIATELY DROVE TO MY MECHANIC'S SHOP FOR EVALUATION AND REPAIR. AFTER RUNNING DIAGNOSTICS, HE DETERMINED THAT THE SENSOR HAD MALFUNCTIONED AND ADVISED ME NOT TO DRIVE THE CAR ANY FURTHER UNTIL IT WAS REPAIRED. AS I UNDERSTAND IT, FROM MY MECHANIC'S EXPLANATION, THE SENSOR DETERMINES THE POSITION OF THE ACCELERATOR AND SENDS A REQUEST FOR ACCELERATION AS A VOLTAGE RANGING FROM 0-5V, WHERE 0V IS NO ACCELERATION AND 5V IS FULL-THROTTLE. THROUGH FURTHER TESTING, HE DETERMINED THAT THE SENSOR THAT HAD MALFUNCTIONED WAS READING 5V. I FIND IT VERY CONCERNING THAT IN THE EVENT OF FAILURE THE SENSOR DOES NOT "FAIL SAFE" (I.E. FAIL TO 0V, RATHER THAN 5V). THE TECHNICIAN EXPLAINED THAT THE SECOND SENSOR WAS THERE AS A SAFETY REDUNDANCY, BUT EITHER WAY, "FAIL SAFE" IS ONE OF THE MOST BASIC DESIGN CONCEPTS IN AN APPLICATION WHERE SAFETY IS CRITICAL AS IS THE CASE HERE. IN MY CONVERSATION WITH TOYOTA, THEY WOULD NOT STAND BEHIND THE PART (MY WARRANTY HAD EXPIRED AND IT WAS NOT ON RECALL), NOR COULD THEY GIVE ME ANY ASSURANCE THAT THE REPLACEMENT PART HAD BEEN REDESIGNED IN SUCH A WAY THAT IT WOULD "FAIL SAFE." I AM A WIFE, MOTHER OF TWO SMALL CHILDREN, AND THE PRIMARY INCOME GENERATOR FOR OUR FAMILY. I DO NOT FEEL GOOD ABOUT WHAT I NOW KNOW ABOUT THE SAFETY OF MY CAR AND DO NOT FEEL THAT TOYOTA TOOK MY CONCERNS TO HEART. I WOULD APPRECIATE ANYTHING YOU COULD DO TO HELP. I SUSPECT I MAY NOT BE THE ONLY ONE TO EXPERIENCE THIS SAFETY FAILURE. *TR

AFTER PULLING THE CAR OFF OF THE TRAVEL LANE AND INTO A SAFE LOCATION, IT WAS NOTED THAT THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT WAS ON. THE CAR COULD BE DRIVEN VERY SLOWLY (APPROXIMATELY 2-4 MILES PER HOUR) WITH THE ACCELERATOR DEPRESSED COMPLETELY. AFTER ABOUT 45 SECONDS THE CAR WOULD ACCELERATE TO 35-40 MILES PER HOUR AND STAY AT THAT SPEED WITH THE ACCELERATOR COMPLETELY DEPRESSED. THE CAR WAS UNSAFE TO OPERATE WITH THESE ACCELERATOR PROBLEMS. WE HAD THE CAR TOWED TO A TOYOTA DEALER WHO INFORMED US THAT THE ELECTRONIC THROTTLE CONTROL COMPUTER HAD FAILED, AND THAT THE ENTIRE ELECTRONIC THROTTLE CONTROL COMPUTER MUST BE REPLACED. *TR

13V442000 · Air Bags; Electrical System; Equipment:appliance:air Conditioner

Oct 17, 2013

Toyota is recalling certain model year 2012-2013 Avalon, Avalon HV, Venza, Camry, and Camry HV vehicles. In the affected vehicles, the drain hose for the air conditioning condenser may become clogged causing water to accumulate at the bottom of the air conditioning condenser unit housing. The accumulated water may then leak through a seam in the housing onto the air bag control module potentially resulting in a short circuit of the module.

Consequence & remedy

Consequence: A short circuit may cause the air bags to become disabled or inadvertently deploy. An inadvertent airbag deployment can increase the risk of injury or the possibility of a crash. An inoperative airbag can increase the risk of injury in a severe crash. The power steering assist could also become inoperable resulting in increased steering effort and can increase the risk of a crash at low speeds.

Remedy: Toyota will notify owners, and dealers will seal the air conditioning condenser unit housing and install a protective cover on the airbag control module, free of charge. The recall began on February 5, 2014. Owners may contact Toyota at 1-800-331-4331.
