ON FRIDAY, 25 MARCH, 2011 AT ABOUT 4 PM, MY WIFE EXPERIENCED A SUDDEN DECELERATION EVENT ON OUR 2010 TOYOTA CAMRY. SHE MADE A RIGHT TURN & IN ABOUT A HALF MILE, THE CAMRY SUDDENLY SLOWED TO LESS THAN 10 MPH FROM ABOUT 40 MPH. SHE PULLED INTO THE FIRST PARKING LOT TO THE RIGHT AND SHUT OFF THE CAMRY. SHE SAID NO MATTER HOW MUCH SHE PRESSED ON THE ACCELERATOR, THE CAR WAS NOT RESPONDING TO THE ACCELERATOR. SHE SAID THE CHECK ENGINE AND THE STABILITY CONTROL LIGHTS WERE ON. SHE TRIED RESTARTING THE CAR AND DROVE A LITTLE IN THE PARKING LOT, THE 2 DASH LIGHTS WERE ON, BUT IT WAS DRIVING OK. SHE DROVE THE CAR SLOWLY APPROXIMATELY 5 MORE MILES TO OUR HOME. I ARRIVED SOON & I CHECKED THE CODES WITH MY DIAGNOSTIC TOOL, AND THE ECU WAS SHOWING AN ACTIVE P0121 (THROTTLE/PEDAL POSITION SENSOR A, CIRCUIT RANGE PERFORMANCE). SO WE DROVE THE CAR SLOWLY TO ATLANTA TOYOTA, 2345 PLEASANT HILL ROAD, DULUTH, GA 30096. DURING THE DRIVE TO THE DEALERSHIP, THE DASH LIGHTS WENT OFF. I REPORTED THE CODE P0121 TO THE SERVICE REP, AND THE DRIVING SYMPTOMS. THE NEXT DAY (SATURDAY, 26 MARCH 2011) ATLANTA TOYOTA CALLED ME REPORTING THAT THERE WERE NO CODES IN THE ECU. I REPEATED THE CODE THAT I HAD READ. THE REP STATED THEY WOULD CHECK AGAIN. AGAIN ATLANTA TOYOTA CALLED ME, STATING NO CODES FOUND, AND THEY HAD TEST DRIVEN THE CAR AND COULD NOT REPLICATE THE PROBLEM. THEY DID REPLACE THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL ASSEMBLY. ON THE DRIVE HOME FROM THE DEALERSHIP I NOTICED THAT THE CLOCK TIME HAD CHANGED ABOUT 30 MINUTES, AND ALL THE RADIO PRESETS WERE GONE, AS IF THE BATTERY HAD BEEN DISCONNECTED.I INQUIRED AND THE DEALERSHIP REP SAID THE BATTERY HAD NOT BEEN TOUCHED.MY CONCERN IS THIS TOYOTA MAY HAVE REPROGRAMMED MY CAR DUE TO THE SUDDEN DECELERATION ISSUE, (HENCE THE CLOCK & RADIO CHANGES), AND THEY ARE NOT BEING FORTHCOMING REGARDING REPAIRS. ALL THEY WILL SAY IS, THERE WERE NO CODES.

AT SPEEDS BETWEEN 40 AND 75, WHEN THE ENGINE IS LIGHTLY LOADED, THE COMPUTER CONTROLLED THROTTLE CANNOT DECIDE IF IT OUGHT TO BE SLIGHTLY OPEN OR COMPLETELY CLOSED. THE WORST CASE IS WHEN TRYING TO MAINTAIN SPEED DOWN A GENTLE HILL. THE THROTTLE CYCLES INTERMITTENTLY BETWEEN OFF AND ON. WHEN THE THROTTLE SHUTS, THE TACH WILL SUDDENLY DROP ABOUT 150 RPM AND THE CAR NOTICEABLY DECELERATES. OFTEN, AFTER A FEW SECONDS, THE COMPUTER SEEMS TO REALIZE THAT THE THROTTLE SHOULDN'T BE ALL THE WAY OFF, AND COMMANDS THE ENGINE TO SPEED UP. ENGINE SPEED THEN JUMPS ABOUT 200 RPM, WITH AN ANNOYING SURGE AND DROPS BACK ABOUT 50 RPM A SECOND OR SO LATER. OCCASIONALLY THE SYSTEM WOULD NOT 'WAKE UP' AND I WOULD HAVE TO APPLY THROTTLE TO GET THE CAR TO RETURN TO THE DESIRED SPEED, AT WHICH POINT IT WOULD ACCELERATE THROUGH MY TARGET SPEED AND I WOULD BACK OFF, ONLY TO HAVE THE CYCLE REPEAT. OCCASIONALLY WHEN ATTEMPTING TO DECELERATE, WITH MY FOOT COMPLETELY OFF THE THROTTLE, THE CAR WOULD CONTINUE TO HOLD SPEED AS IF ON CRUISE CONTROL. AT ONE POINT, I PROCEEDED ABOUT A HALF MILE AT 60 MPH WITH MY FEET FLAT ON THE FLOOR. SEVERAL TIMES, I HAD TO STEP ON THE BRAKES TO KEEP FROM OVERRUNNING TRAFFIC AHEAD WHEN THE ENGINE DID NOT RESPOND TO REDUCED THROTTLE. WHEN DECELERATING TO A STOP FROM CRUISING SPEED (ABOVE 50 MPH), PARTICULARLY DOWN A HILL, AFTER THE THROTTLE HAD INITIALLY CLOSED, THE VEHICLE WOULD DECELERATE NORMALLY TO ABOUT 40 MPH, AT WHICH POINT ENGINE SPEED WOULD SUDDENLY INCREASE ABOUT 200 RPM AND THE VEHICLE WOULD BEGIN TO GENTLY ACCELERATE. THESE UNCOMMANDED THROTTLE EXCURSIONS WERE MILD. WHEN THE VEHICLE DID NOT DECELERATE AS COMMANDED, SPEED COULD ALWAYS BE REDUCED WITH LIGHT BRAKE APPLICATION. BUT, THE PROBLEM IS CONSISTENTLY ANNOYING AND IS A SYMPTOM THAT THE COMPUTER CONTROLLED THROTTLE SYSTEM IS NOT WORKING PROPERLY IN THIS VEHICLE. THIS RENTAL CAR EXHIBITED THE PROBLEM CONSISTENTLY FOR A WEEK. NO CHECK ENGINE LIGHT. *TR

ON TUESDAY, DECEMBER 28, 2010, AT APPROXIMATELY 8:30 PM, (AZ-GMT) I WAS DRIVING MY 2002 TOYOTA CAMRY SE 4-DR IN A ROAD CONSTRUCTION ZONE AT 15 MILES PER HOUR. I CAME TO A STOP AT A RED SIGNAL LIGHT WHEN I SMELLED THE ODOR OF AN ELECTRICAL FIRE. I STARTED CHECKING THE DASHBOARD FOR ANY WARNING LIGHTS ON, WHICH THERE WERE NONE LIT. A/C AND HEATER SWITCHES WERE IN THE OFF POSITION. AS THE LIGHT TURNED GREEN, I WENT THROUGH THE INTERSECTION AND PULLED OVER IMMEDIATELY. I STARTED LOOKING AROUND THE INTERIOR TO SEE IF SOMETHING WAS BURNING. AS I WAS CHECKING THE BACK SEAT, I SAW BLACK SMOKE BILLOWING OUT OF THE REAR BOTTOM OF THE CAR, THINKING THAT IT WAS SOMETHING BURNING IN THE TRUNK. I USED THE TRUNK LEVER TO OPEN IT, GOT OUT OF THE CAR AND NOTICED THAT NOTHING WAS BURNING THERE, AND WENT BACK TO THE DRIVERS DOOR. I THEN NOTICED FLAMES COMING FROM THE BOTTOM OF THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT. I REALIZED THAT THE ENGINE WAS STILL RUNNING. I TURNED THE CAR OFF AND RAN A SAFE DISTANCE AWAY FROM IT. I DIALED 911 TO REPORT THE FIRE. I WAS LESS THAN A HALF MILE FROM HOME AND CALLED MY HUSBAND, WHO RESPONDED IN LESS THAN 5 MINUTES WITH A LARGE FIRE EXTINGUISHER. HE DID NOT OPEN THE HOOD, BUT TRIED TO EXTINGUISH THE FLAMES FROM THE FRONT END, BUT WAS UNSUCCESSFUL. THE FIRE SPREAD RAPIDLY INTO THE FRONT SEAT AREA BEFORE THE FIRE DEPT ARRIVED. THE CAR WAS A TOTAL LOSS. THERE WAS NOTHING WRONG WITH THE TOYOTA AS IT WAS IN GOOD OPERATING CONDITION AND SERVICED REGULARLY. PREVIOUSLY THAT DAY, I HAD DRIVEN THE CAR APPROXIMATELY 10 MILES WITHOUT ANY ISSUES OR PROBLEMS. JUST BEFORE THE FIRE, I HAD DRIVEN THE CAR FOR APPROXIMATELY 4 MILES ON SURFACE STREETS AT 25 MILES PER HOUR. THE CAR WAS RUNNING JUST FINE, AND THERE WERE NO INDICATIONS OF PROBLEMS LIKE A LOSS OF POWER, AND NO WARNING LIGHTS HAD COME ON AT ALL. I WAS THE SECOND OWNER OF THE CAR. MY MOTHER BOUGHT THE CAR BRAND NEW IN 2002 IN MESA, AZ FROM SUPERSTITION SPRINGS TOYOTA. THE CAR WAS ALWAYS MAINTAINED. *TR

DEC 2008 THE BATTERY DIED AND MY LOCAL GARAGE TRACED IT TO THE ALARM- THEY DISCONNECTED THE MODULE. AAA REPLACED THE BATTERY. NOV 15, -2010-, BATTERY DIED AGAIN AND THE CAR WAS TOWED TO MY LOCAL STATION. THEY LOCATED ANOTHER DRAW ON BATTERY BUT COULD NOT REPAIR IT AND SENT IT TO BALISE IN WARWICK RI. I HAD PURCHASED IT THERE.AFTER 2-3 DAYS ON THEIR COMPUTER, THEY LOCATED IT IN THE INSTRUMENT CLUSTER IN THE ODOMETER. THE CAR HAS NO SERIOUS RECALLS ON IT AND I NOTE THAT THOUGH 2005, 2007-2010 HAVE BEEN RECALLED THE 2006 HAS NOT. I WISH TO REPORT THIS SO IT IS ON RECORD IN THE EVENT THERE IS A RECALL. THE CAR HAS 25,000 MILES ON IT AND THE REPAIR THIS TIME WILL COST ABOUT $1100. I HAVE BEEN WITHOUT A CAR FOR 7 DAYS AS BALISE HAD TO ORDER THE PART LAST FRIDAY NOV. 19TH. IT WILL ARRIVE, HOPEFULLY, MON NOV 22ND.

13V442000 · Air Bags; Electrical System; Equipment:appliance:air Conditioner

Oct 17, 2013

Toyota is recalling certain model year 2012-2013 Avalon, Avalon HV, Venza, Camry, and Camry HV vehicles. In the affected vehicles, the drain hose for the air conditioning condenser may become clogged causing water to accumulate at the bottom of the air conditioning condenser unit housing. The accumulated water may then leak through a seam in the housing onto the air bag control module potentially resulting in a short circuit of the module.

Consequence & remedy

Consequence: A short circuit may cause the air bags to become disabled or inadvertently deploy. An inadvertent airbag deployment can increase the risk of injury or the possibility of a crash. An inoperative airbag can increase the risk of injury in a severe crash. The power steering assist could also become inoperable resulting in increased steering effort and can increase the risk of a crash at low speeds.

Remedy: Toyota will notify owners, and dealers will seal the air conditioning condenser unit housing and install a protective cover on the airbag control module, free of charge. The recall began on February 5, 2014. Owners may contact Toyota at 1-800-331-4331.
