MY DAUGHTER WAS ON HER WAY TO SCHOOL ON THE MORNING OF 3/28/2012, WHEN OUR 1999 TOYOTA CAMRY STARTED TO ACCELERATE ON ITS OWN. MY DAUGHTER TRIED TO STOP THE VEHICLE BY PRESSING THE BRAKE AS HARD AS SHE COULD BUT THE CAR CONTINUED TO ACCELERATE. SHE PUT THE CAR IN NEUTRAL AND THE ENGINE'S RPM'S WENT TO THE MAXIMUM. THE CAR AT THAT POINT MUST HAVE BLOWN A PISTON ROD OR VALVE, OIL WAS SPRAYING INSIDE THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT. SHE MADE AN ATTEMPT TO BUMP THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL SEVERAL TIMES TO SEE IF IT WOULD RELEASE. THE CAR WAS STALLED ON A MAIN STREET WITH EMERGENCY FLASHERS ON. SHE AGAIN TRIED TO START THE CAR AND RPM'S WENT TO THE MAX AND THE AT THAT POINT SMOKE STARTED RISING FROM UNDER THE HOOD. SEVERAL PEOPLE CAME TO SEE WHAT WAS GOING ON AND TRIED TO HELP TRAFFIC MOVE AROUND THE VEHICLE. I ARRIVED AT MY DAUGHTERS LOCATION AND WITH THE HELP OF OTHERS PUSHED THE CAR SEVERAL HUNDRED FEET INTO A RESIDENTIAL DRIVE WAY. I HAVE NOW TOWED THE CAR BACK TO MY HOME AND NEED HELP TO DETERMINE WHAT THE ROOT CAUSE FOR THIS FAILURE WAS. I AM VERY RELUCTANT TO MAKE REPAIRS TO THIS VEHICLE KNOWING THAT THIS COULD HAPPEN AGAIN. AS I REVIEW OTHER VEHICLE ACCELERATION COMPLAINTS FOR THE SAME MAKE AND MODEL, I WANT OTHER 1999 CAMRY OWNERS TO BE AWARE THAT THIS TYPE OF ACCELERATION PROBLEM CAN AND DOES OCCUR. WE ARE VERY LUCKY OUR DAUGHTER DID NOT SUFFER ANY INJURIES OR CAUSE ANY DEATHS WITH THIS VEHICLE. THE FINAL MILEAGE IS AT AROUND 162,000. *TR

I AM REPORTING THE SAME SPEEDOMETER VARIANCES AS ORIGINALLY NOTED IN ODI CASE NUMBER: 10444688. MY SPEED REFLECTS 35 MPH ON MY SPEEDOMETER, WHEN IN FACT IT IS ONLY 33 MPH. ALSO, IF I AM GOING 55 - PER THE SPEEDOMETER, THE CAR IN FACT IS ONLY GOING 52 - 53 MPH. THIS DIFFERENCE IS CONSISTANT WITH AN ACTUAL SPEED BEING ABOUT 5% LESS THAN WHAT IT ACTUALLY DISPLAYS ON THE CAMEY'S SPEEDOMETER. I HAVE 'CHECKED' THE ACTUAL SPEED BY 1) A POLICE SPEED MONITORING SIGN/DISPLAY THAT IS PUT INTO VARIOUS LOCATIONS TO BOTH CHECK YOUR SPEED AND TO NOTIFIY YOU OF THAT ACTUAL SPEED IN THE HOPES THAT YOU WILL SLOW DOWN; AND 2) BY CHECKING MY TOMTOM GPS UNIT WHICH PROVIDES A TRUE READOUT OF MY ACTUAL SPEED MEASURED BY ITS 8 SATELITES IN THE SKY. IT LIKEWISE ALWAYS SHOWS A LOWER 'ACTUAL' READING THAN WHAT MY SPEEDOMETER SHOWS. IT IS BETTER TO HAVE THE 'INACURRACY' OF THE READ SPEED TO BE ON THE LOWER END OF THINGS - I.E., YOU ARE GOING SLOWER THAN YOU THINK YOU ARE, THAN TO HAVE IT REVERSED - WHICH WOULD BE BOTH MORE UNSAFE AND CAUSE YOU TO GET SPEEDING TICKETS. HOWEVER, IN THIS DAY-AND-AGE, WITH 'DIGITIAL' INSTRUCTMENTS/CHIPS'; YOU WOULD THINK THAT 'MEASURING SPEED' CORRECTLY WOULD BE VERY SIMPLE TASK! ...MAKES YOU WONDER, IF THEY CAN'T DO THIS CORRECTLY - WHAT ELSE, OF A MORE SERIOUS NATURE, IS NOT WORKING CORRECTLY. *JS

ON 12/26/11, I WAS DRIVING MY CAR ALONG WITH THREE PASSENGERS AND BEGAN TO SEE BLACK SMOKE THROUGHOUT THE CAR. I DETERMINED THAT THE SMOKE WAS COMING FROM THE DRIVER SIDE MASTER CONTROL PANEL ON THE DOOR. SHORTLY THEREAFTER, THE SMOKE IMMEDIATELY TURNED INTO FLAMES, WHICH CAUSED POOR VISIBILITY AND COMPLETE PANIC. LUCKILY, I PULLED TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD AND HAD ALL PASSENGERS IMMEDIATELY EXIT THE VEHICLE. PRIOR TO EXITING THE VEHICLE, THE FLAMES CAUGHT THE LEFT SIDE OF MY ARM AND STARTED TO BURN MY COAT. DURING THIS ORDEAL, I NOTICED THAT THE FRONT PASSENGER SIDE WINDOW IMMEDIATELY DROPPED UNEXPECTEDLY. AFTER EXITING THE VEHICLE THE FLAMES QUICKLY INCREASED AND BEGAN SHOOTING INTO THE AIR UNCONTROLLABLY. ON INSTINCT, I DECIDED TO LEAVE THE CAR DOOR OPEN FACING THE STREET AS I WAS FEARFUL TO CLOSE THE DOOR, WHICH WOULD FURTHER EXACERBATE THE FIRE. MY HUSBAND WAS ABLE TO RETRIEVE A PIECE OF CLOTHING FROM THE TRUNK OF THE CAR AND USED IT TO PUT OUT THE FIRE WHILE SUSTAINING A BURN ON HIS HAND. I IMMEDIATELY CALLED 911 AS THEY DISPATCHED THE FIRE DEPARTMENT TO THE SCENE. THE FIRE DEPARTMENT COMPLETELY EXTINGUISHED THE FIRE AND INDICATED THAT IT MAY HAVE BEEN CAUSED DUE TO ELECTRICAL PROBLEMS. OVERALL, IT WAS A FRIGHTENING EXPERIENCE FOR MYSELF AND FAMILY MEMBERS AS I STRONGLY FEEL THAT NO ONE HAS A CLEAR EXPLANATION AS TO THE CAUSE OF THE FIRE AND FAILS TO ENSURE MY FAMILY'S SAFETY AND WELL BEING. I IMMEDIATELY CONTACTED MY INSURANCE AGENT, THE DEALERSHIP AND EXPLAINED THE INCIDENT IN DETAIL ALONG WITH FILING A COMPLAINT WITH TOYOTA MOTOR CORPORATION. THIS IS A SIGNIFICANT INCIDENT THAT OCCURRED AND FURTHER INVESTIGATION AND CONSIDERATION SHOULD BE TAKEN. THIS INCIDENT FORTUNATELY DID NOT LEAD TO ANY SERIOUS PHYSICAL INJURIES, HOWEVER THE EMOTIONAL TRAUMA AND DISTRESS CAUSED BY THE ORDEAL IS LONG-LASTING. *TR UPDATED 07/24/12

IT WAS AT NIGHT SO I COULD NOT SEE WHERE IT WAS COMING FROM SO I PULLED OVER AND NOTICED SMOKE WAS COMING FROM THE FRONT LEFT DRIVER SIDE DOOR AND EVEN THROUGH THE WINDOW SWITCH. I TURNED AROUND AND WENT BACK HOME SO I CAN TURN THE CAR OFF AND LET THE SMOKE ESCAPE THE CAR. IT STOPPED SMOKING AFTER AWHILE BUT NOW I CANT USE NONE OF MY WINDOWS EXCEPT THE DRIVER SIDE. THE OTHER SWITCHES ARE STUCK THEY WONT MOVE SEEMED LIKE THAT WHAT WAS BURNING. THIS DEFINITELY NEEDS TO BE INVESTIGATED BECAUSE WITH A CAR ONLY 4 YEARS OLD, THIS SHOULD NOT BE HAPPENING. THE CAR HAS BEEN WELL MAINTAINED. CALLED TOYOTA AND THE MAIN POWER WINDOW SWITCH IS 350, SOMETHING THAT I SHOULD NOT BE RESPONSIBLE FOR. *TR

13V442000 · Air Bags; Electrical System; Equipment:appliance:air Conditioner

Oct 17, 2013

Toyota is recalling certain model year 2012-2013 Avalon, Avalon HV, Venza, Camry, and Camry HV vehicles. In the affected vehicles, the drain hose for the air conditioning condenser may become clogged causing water to accumulate at the bottom of the air conditioning condenser unit housing. The accumulated water may then leak through a seam in the housing onto the air bag control module potentially resulting in a short circuit of the module.

Consequence & remedy

Consequence: A short circuit may cause the air bags to become disabled or inadvertently deploy. An inadvertent airbag deployment can increase the risk of injury or the possibility of a crash. An inoperative airbag can increase the risk of injury in a severe crash. The power steering assist could also become inoperable resulting in increased steering effort and can increase the risk of a crash at low speeds.

Remedy: Toyota will notify owners, and dealers will seal the air conditioning condenser unit housing and install a protective cover on the airbag control module, free of charge. The recall began on February 5, 2014. Owners may contact Toyota at 1-800-331-4331.
