CAR SURGING WHILE DRIVING AND RADIO WOULD CUT OUT AND THE TOYOTA EMBLEM AND WORD TOYOTA APPEARS ON SCREEN. 1ST VISIT DEALER STATED A COMPUTER CHIP NEEDED UPDATE. THIS FIXED THE SURGING WHILE DRIVING BUT DID NOT FIX THE RADIO FROM CUTTING OUT. DEALER COULD NOT DUPLICATE RADIO SHUT DOWN. SECOND VISIT BACK TO DEALER, HAD THE CAR 10 DAYS AND WAS ABLE TO DUPLICATE RADIO SHUTTING OFF. DEALER REPLACED THE EXTENSION MODULE. CAR RETURNED AND STILL RADIO WAS CUTTING OUT. 3RD TIME DEALER REPLACED THE ENTIRE RADIO UNIT, WITHIN 30 MINUTES OF DRIVING THE RADIO WAS DOING IT AGAIN.FOURTH VISIT BACK TO DEALER. DEALER DISCONNECTED EXTENSION MODULE, RADIO STILL CUT OUT, REPLACED RADIO AND AMPLIFIER FROM NEW CAR SITTING ON THE LOT, RADIO STILL CUT OUT. SERVICE MANAGER DROVE CAR HOME FOR SEVERAL DAYS AND RADIO WAS STILL CUTTING OUT. TRAVELING SERVICE REP WAS CALLED IN ON 2 OCCASIONS TO DIAGNOSE. TRAVELING SERVICE REP IS DRIVING A TOYOTA TACOMA THAT DOES THE SAME THING BUT IS UNABLE TO IDENTIFY THE PROBLEM. THE DEALER RETURNED THE CAR AND SAID IT WAS NOT THEIR ISSUE AND IT IS A HD RADIO SIGNAL BEING SENT OUT BY 98.9, A ENTERCOM BROADCASTING COMPANY AND THAT THEIR EQUIPMENT WAS WORKING IS NOT AN ISSUE WITH THE INSTALLED EQUIPMENT. TALKING WITH TOYOTA CUSTOMER SERVICE THEY STATED THE PROBLEM WAS A KNOWN ISSUE. I CONTACTED 5 TOYOTA DEALERSHIP SERVICE DEPARTMENTS AND NONE OF THEM HAVE HEARD OF THIS ISSUE OR HAD A CUSTOMER BRING THEIR CAR IN FOR THE SAME ISSUE. TALKING WITH TOYOTA CUSTOMER SERVICE THEY STATED THEY WERE ONLY DEALING WITH MY CAR AND NOT CONCERNED WITH OTHER CARS HAVING THIS ISSUE. I AM HAVING TROUBLE UNDERSTANDING HOW THIS IS NOT A SERIOUS SAFETY ISSUE. I CANNOT SEE A HD RADIO SIGNAL SHUTTING THE ENTIRE RADIO DOWN AND THEN RESTARTING. WHEN THE INCIDENT OCCURS IT CAUSES THE LIGHTS ON THE SIDE DISPLAY BUTTONS OF THE RADIO TO ALSO GO OUT AND COME BACK ON. *TR

IN PARKING GARAGE I WANTED TO BACK UP FROM POST. I PUT CAR IN REVERSE AND HAD FOOT ON BRAKE. WHEN I RELEASED BRAKE SLIGHTLY, THE ENGINE ROARED AND THE CAR LUNGED BACK AND EVEN WITH MY FOOT MASHING ON THE BRAKE, THE CAR JUMPED A CURB IN THE GARAGE AND DID NOT STOP UNTIL IT HIT AN SUV AND KNOCKED IT INTO A BRICK WALL. MY PASSENGER SUFFERED A SUBDURAL HEMATOMA AND WAS HOSPITALIZED IN PORTLAND, OR DURING CHRISTMAS VACATION. SHE HAD TO REMAIN IN PORTAND 30 DAYS UNTIL SHE HAD A CLEAR CTSCAN. JANUARY 21, 2013 I WAS STOPPED FOR STOP SIGN WITH FOOT ON THE BRAKE, WHEN SAME VEHICLE LUNGED FORWARD AT ABOUT 30 MPH. I HAD A REPEAT WHEN I WAS BRAKING TO SLOW DOWN FOR A TURN, AND VEHICLE JUST LUNGED FORWARD AND IT TOOK ME HALF A BLOCK TO GET THE CAR TO STOP. ON JANUARY 26, 2013 I HAD A REPEAT OF THE STOP SIGN INCIDENT. I HAD FOOT ON BRAKE AND WAS AT A COMPLETE STOP, WHEN CAR LUNGED FORWARD. FORTUNATELY THERE WERE NO CARS COMING AND I SAFELY MADE A LEFT TURN AS IT WAS A DEAD END STREET. AGAIN IT TOOK ME ABOUT HALF A BLOCK TO GET THE CAR TO COME TO A STOP AGAIN. I DO NOT FEEL SAFE TO DRIVE THIS CAR AND HAVE LEFT IT WITH A LOCAL TOYOTA DEALER AND HAD BRAKES REPAIRED. I HAVE SPOKEN TO SERVICE MANAGER, RICK, AND AT HQ, [XXX], ABOUT MY ISSUES. TOYOTA HAS POLITELY BRUSHED ME OFF LIKE A PIECE OF LINT BOTH FOR THE ACCIDENT IN 2007 AND MY CURRENT ISSUES. I HAVE JOINED THE CLASS ACTION SUIT AGAINST TOYOTA AND AM REQUESTING THE BRAKE OVERRIDE AS A STOP-GAS MEASURE. I CURRENTLY HAVE 82,700 MILES ON VEHICLE AND HAD PLANNED TO DRIVE IT FOR SEVERAL MORE YEARS. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6). *TR

SYMPTOMS: 1. REAR LIGHTS OFF WARNING COMES ON THE DASHBOARD 2. CHECK WARNING LIGHT COMES ON WITH CODE 1780. (NEUTRAL SWITCH ON THE AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION HAS A PROBLEM) 3. NO BRAKE LIGHTS OR REVERSE LIGHT ON IN THE TRUNK AREA ONLY WHEN APPLYING THE BRAKES. 4. BRAKES VIBRATE WHEN SLOWING DOWN AROUND 10MPH TO STOP LIKE YOUR TIRES ARE RIDING A VERY ROUGH SURFACES. 5. REVERSE LIGHT COMES ON IN THE SHIFT GEAR INDICATOR WHEN APPLYING BRAKES TO SHIFT FROM PARK POSITION. INITIAL ATTEMPT TO FIX THIS PROBLEM: CHANGING THE REVERSE LIGHT BULBS AND BRAKE LIGHT BULBS, BUT PROBLEMS CONTINUE TO REMAIN AS DESCRIBE IN THE SYMPTOMS. 2ND ATTEMPT BY MIKE GERBER FROM WEBSITE WWW:\\AUTOMOTIVEFORUMS.COM. HE REPORTED THERE IS A LOOSE WIRES CONNECTION OR FRAYED WIRES AT THE HINGE OF THE TRUNK ON THE DRIVER SIDE. AFTER CAREFUL INSPECTION ON THE WIRE HARNESS AT THE HINGE CONNECTION OF THE TRUNK, DISCOVERED AT LEAST ONE WIRE THAT WAS ABOUT THE BREAK OFF FROM OPENING AND CLOSING THE TRUNK OF THE CAR FOR MANY YEARS. AFTER FIXING THESE WIRES, ALL THE SYMPTOMS WERE RESOLVED. AMAZING!!! COULDN'T HAVE SOLVED THIS PROBLEM SO FAST WITHOUT THE READING THE ARTICLE FROM MIKE GERBER. THANKS!!!!! REASON FROM WRITING THIS COMPLIANT: TOYOTA MANUFACTURE SHOULD RECALL ALL THESE VEHICLES WITH THIS COMPLIANT WITHOUT ANY CHARGES TO THEIR OWNERS..... THIS IS A SAFETY ISSUE BECAUSE IT AFFECTED THE PERFORMANCE OF THE BRAKING SYSTEM CAUSING A VIBRATION EVERYTIMES YOU APPLY THE BRAKES LIKE THE ABS SYSTEM IS ACTIVATED. IN ADDITION, THE BRAKE LIGHTS AREN'T WORKING CORRECTLY EVEN AFTER CHANGING ALL THE BULBS IN THE TRUNK AREA. *TR

Oct 17, 2013

Toyota is recalling certain model year 2012-2013 Avalon, Avalon HV, Venza, Camry, and Camry HV vehicles. In the affected vehicles, the drain hose for the air conditioning condenser may become clogged causing water to accumulate at the bottom of the air conditioning condenser unit housing. The accumulated water may then leak through a seam in the housing onto the air bag control module potentially resulting in a short circuit of the module.

Consequence & remedy

Consequence: A short circuit may cause the air bags to become disabled or inadvertently deploy. An inadvertent airbag deployment can increase the risk of injury or the possibility of a crash. An inoperative airbag can increase the risk of injury in a severe crash. The power steering assist could also become inoperable resulting in increased steering effort and can increase the risk of a crash at low speeds.

Remedy: Toyota will notify owners, and dealers will seal the air conditioning condenser unit housing and install a protective cover on the airbag control module, free of charge. The recall began on February 5, 2014. Owners may contact Toyota at 1-800-331-4331.
