Suspension

CONSUMER WAS TRAVELING ON HIGHWAY AND LEFT REAR AXLE BEARING BROKE. THEN, RIGHT AXLE BEARING BROKE, AND DUAL WHEEL SHOT OUT LIKE A WEAPON ON THE ROAD. DUAL WHEEL WAS PUT TOGETHER WRONG, AND IT CAUSED STRESS WHEN HITTING PAVEMENT. DEALERSHIP WAS AWARE OF THE PROBLEM. *AK

91V062000 · Power Train:axle Assembly

REAR AXLE BEARINGS MAY FAIL DUE TO A BENDING MOMENT CREATED BY THE AFTERMARKET DUAL REAR WHEELS FROM A VARIETY OF FACTORS AND ESPECIALLY WHEN OVERLOADED. FAILURE OF THE BEARINGS CREATE STRESSES ON THE THE REAR AXLE, RESULTING IN BREAKAGE OF THE AXLE.

Consequence & remedy

Consequence: A BROKEN AXLE WILL CAUSE SEPARATION OF THE DUAL REARWHEEL ASSEMBLY FROM THE MOTORHOME, CAUSING LOSS OF CONTROL WHICH COULD RESULT INAN ACCIDENT.

Remedy: REPLACE REAR AXLE ASSEMBLIES WITH FULL-FLOATING REAR AXLE ASSEMBLIES.

SUMMARY:INFORMATION WAS REQUESTED AND RECEIVED FROM THE FOLLOWING:MANUFACTURER CONTACT RECEIVED TOYOTA MOTOR CORPORATION 8/18/8611/10/86 NISSAN MOTOR CORPORATION 8/20/8610/31/86 GENERAL MOTORS CORPORATION 8/20/8610/31/86 FORD MOTOR COMPANY 8/20/8610/28/86 CHRYSLER CORPORATION12/11/86 2/06/87ANALYSIS: THE INFORMATION RECEIVED FROM THE VARIOUS CHASSIS SUPPLIERS INDICATES THAT THEY DO NOT SUPPORT LOADING A CHASSIS IN EXCESS OF THEIR ESTABLISHED GVWR AND WILL NOT NORMALLY WARRANT REPAIR.THE OEM MANUFACTURERS WOULD NOT ENDORSE THE MODIFICATIONS TO THEIR VEHICLES BY THE MICRO-MINI MOTORHOME MANUFACTURERS WITHOUT EXTENSIVE TESTING.PROPOSED ACTION: CLOSE THE PE, INFORMATION USED IN EXISTING EAS.===
