IN MARCH 2010 WE TOOK THE VEHICLE TO A DEALERSHIP FOR A CHECK ENGINE LIGHT STAYING ON AND THE FUEL GAUGE MALFUNCTIONING. THE PROBLEMS DISCOVERED WERE A FUEL SENDING UNIT FAILURE AND AN EVAP AIR CONTROL VALVE FAILURE. ESTIMATED REPAIRS COST AROUND $1300. WE WERE TOLD THE FUEL SENDING ISSUE DID NOT EFFECT FUEL DELIVERY SO WE ELECTED TO WAIT AND SAVE UP FOR THE COSTLY REPAIR. ON OCT. 23, 2010 WHILE DRIVING THE POWER STEERING AND BRAKES STIFFENED AND THE VEHICLE DIED WHILE CROSSING TRAFFIC LEAVING A STOP SIGN. IT STARTED ROUGH AND WE PROCEEDED TO A FUEL STATION THINKING THE BROKEN FUEL GAUGE REPORTED FUEL IN AN EMPTY TANK. WHEN I ATTEMPTED TO FUEL THE VEHICLE IT ONLY TOOK ABOUT 4 GALLONS. THE TANK HAD PLENTY OF FUEL. THIS STALLING AND DIEING THEN HAPPENED MORE TIMES IN TRAFFIC CAUSING US TO BARELY MANEUVER OUT OF THE LANE TO SAFETY. EACH TIME IT DIED IT WAS ROUGH TO START, BUT STARTED. WE MADE A SERVICE APPOINTMENT FOR NOV. 12, 2010 TO HAVE THIS LOOKED AT AND GET THE FUEL SENDING UNIT REPAIRED UNDER THE NEW WARRANTY EXTENSION (THANK YOU NISSAN!). ON NOV 11, 2010 AFTER PULLING OUT OF A PARKING SPACE THE VEHICLE DIED AGAIN AND THIS TIME WOULD NOT START. AS A RESULT OF OUR LOCATION (NO LOCAL NISSAN DEALERSHIP), WE THEN HAD TO HAVE IT TOWED (AT OUR EXPENSE) 38 MILES TO THE NEAREST DEALER TO LOOK AT IT. WE ALSO HAD TO CANCEL OUR ORIGINAL APPOINTMENT FOR SERVICE AT ANOTHER DEALERSHIP. THEY INFORMED US THAT THE NEW NON-STARTING AND STALLING PROBLEM WAS A FAULTY IGNITION POWER DISTRIBUTION MODULE (IPDM). THIS IPDM IS A KNOWN RECALL ISSUE IN OTHER 2004-06 NISSANS BUT PATHFINDER WAS NOT LISTED. OUR NEW ESTIMATE TO REPLACE THE IPDM SO IT WILL START AND RUN IS APPROXIMATELY $700. THE IPDM FAILURE ALMOST CAUSED MULTIPLE ACCIDENTS, STALLING IN TRAFFIC. I CAN'T BELIEVE THAT NISSAN USED A DIFFERENT IPDM IN JUST THE PATHFINDER AND WILL OWN-UP AND RECALL THEIR MISTAKE.

2005 NISSAN PATHFINDER LE FUEL GAUGE READING FLUCTUATES AND READS EMPTY 90% OF THE TIME, CAUSING A POTENTIAL ACCIDENT DUE TO INACCURATE GAS READING. PURCHASED SUV BRAND NEW IN NOV '06, REPORTED ISSUE DURING WARRANTY PERIOD, BUT NEVER SEEMED TO ACT UP WHEN AT THE DEALERSHIP, UNTIL 51K MILES HIT AND THE PROBLEM BECAME PERMANENT AND OUT OF WARRANTY. I HAVE 2 SMALL CHILDREN AND HAVE RUN OUT OF GAS ONCE ON A MAJOR HIGHWAY 66 AND ONCE ON A BACK ROAD IN WINTER WITH NO RECEPTION. THIS IS A SERIOUS ISSUE THAT THOUSANDS OF PEOPLE ONLINE HAVE POSTED THE SAME SITUATION. NISSAN CLEARLY NEEDS TO ISSUE A RECALL FOR THE 2005 NISSAN PATHFINDER. I WAS LUCKY ENOUGH BOTH TIMES TO NOT BE RE-ENDED, BUT HAVE HAD MY INFANT WITH ME BOTH TIMES AND HAD TO HAVE CITIZENS PUSH ME TO THE SHOULDER. *TR

THE TRANSMISSION FAILED AT 52,800 MILES. NO "SLAMMING" OF GEARS OR SHUDDERING OR DIFFICULTY IN SHIFTING THAT WOULD INDICATE AN ISSUE. TRANSMISSION SERVICED AT 40,000 MILES AND OIL CHANGE/FLUID CHECK AND STATE INSPECTION PASSED 8 WEEKS PRIOR TO FAILURE. WHEN SHIFTED INTO REVERSE, GEAR WOULD NOT ENGAGE FOR SEVERAL SECONDS. BECAUSE ACCELERATION/GAS HAD BEEN GIVEN, WHEN THE GEAR DID ENGAGE, THE ENGINE WOULD REV AND REVERSE AT APPROXIMATELY 20 MPH CAUSING NEAR ACCIDENTS WITH OTHER VEHICLES AND PEDESTRIANS IN VICINITY. BROUGHT TO NISSAN DEALER AND WAS INFORMED TRANSMISSION FLUID WAS BURNED. I REQUESTED THE RADIATOR BE EXAMINED AND ALTHOUGH THE DEALER SAID THEY DID IT DOES NOT SHOW ON MY SERVICE RECEIPT. DEALER STATED IT WAS A FAULTY TRANSMISSION ONLY, NO RADIATOR INVOLVEMENT. I WAS 3 MONTHS OUTSIDE OF THE DRIVETRAIN WARRANTY. AFTER 7 DAYS OF NEGOTIATION, NISSAN DECIDED TO PAY FOR PART OF THE REBUILT TRANSMISSION AND LABOR. OVER $2000 OUT OF POCKET FOR TRANS AND RENTAL CAR. ALL SERVICE PERFORMED AT REGULAR INTERVALS, ALL SERVICE RECORDS KEPT. ALL SERVICES WERE PERFORMED AT DEALER THE VEHICLE WAS PURCHASED FROM. SAFETY RECALLS SHOULD NOT BE BUSINESS DECISIONS BASED ON SAVING LARGE COMPANIES THE MILLIONS THEY ARE CHEATING THEIR CUSTOMERS OUT OF ON UNUSUAL REPAIRS ABOVE AND BEYOND NORMAL MAINTENANCE. THEY SHOULD BE BASED ON SAVING LIVES AND PREVENTING ACCIDENTS. I NEARLY HIT A PEDESTRIAN DUE TO THIS SUDDEN TRANSMISSION FAILURE. *TR

BOUGHT A NISSAN PATHFINDER SE 2005... IT HAS OVER 70,000 MILES ON IT NOW. I WAS DRIVING IT DOWN THE HIGHWAY, WITH MY HUSBAND AND 12 MONTH OLD BABY GIRL, SURROUNDED IN WALL TO WALL RUSH HOUR TRAFFIC AND ROAD CONSTRUCTION. THE NISSAN STARTED MAKING A GRINDING NOISE THEN STARTED SLIPPING 4TH GEAR. SUDDENLY WITHOUT ANY NOTICE 4TH GEAR WAS COMPLETELY OUT. I HAD TO STOP THE CAR, PUT IT IN 3RD GEAR MANUALLY AND DRIVE BEFORE GETTING REAR ENDED. MIRACULOUSLY IT DROVE IN 3RD GEAR SO WE TOOK IT TO THE NISSAN DEALERSHIP WHO EXPLAINED TO US THAT THE PROBLEM WITH THE RADIATOR. THE RADIATOR WAS CAUSING COOLANT TO LEAK INTO THE TRANSMISSION, MIXING WITH THE TRANSMISSION OIL AND DESTROYING OUR TRANSMISSION. HE KNEW THIS PROBLEM WELL SINCE HE'S FIXED THEM MANY TIMES. WE CHECKED ON THE INTERNET AND FOUND COUNTLESS MORE INDIVIDUAL SUCH AS OURSELVES EXPERIENCING THE SAME PROBLEM. THE MECHANIC ALSO EXPLAINED THE NEW PATHFINDERS ARE NOT USING THESE FAULTY RADIATORS, SO NISSAN KNOWS THERE IS A PROBLEM. TO FIX THE TRANSMISSION USING A USED ONE WILL BE $4,000. THAT'S INCLUDING THE USED TRANSMISSION, LABOR, SHIPPING COSTS, TAX, AND FLUIDS. I UNDERSTAND THAT THINGS BREAK AND WEAR OUT, BUT IF A COMPANY SAYS THAT YOU SHOULD BUY THERE VEHICLE BECAUSE THEY WILL STAND BEHIND IT, AND THAT THEY BELIEVE THAT THEY HAVE A QUALITY PRODUCT THAT YOU CAN COUNT ON, THEN THEY SHOULD DO AS THEY SAY AND STAND BEHIND THERE NISSAN. WE ARE ONE CAR SHORT WITH NOT MUCH MONEY TO PAY FOR SUCH A EXPENSIVE REPAIR. A RECALL IS THE RIGHT THING TO DO, I DON'T THINK SOMEONE HAS TO DIE BEFORE SOMEONE SOMEWHERE STANDS UP TO MAKE SOMETHING HAPPENS. OUR FAMILY HAVE ALREADY SUFFERED A LOSS DUE TO A SUV MALFUNCTION. AT LEAST TOYOTA ADMITS THEIR FAULTS AND TAKES CARE OF THE PROBLEMS. NISSAN HAVE LOST ALL CREDIBILITY WITH OUR SIDE OF THE FAMILY AND FRIENDS. *TR

I HAVE A 2005 NISSAN PATHFINDER. IN AUGUST OF 2009, WHEN THE VEHICLE WAS 4 YEARS OLD, IT STARTED STALLING RANDOMLY EVERY 15-30 MILES. EVENTUALLY, AFTER SEVERAL TRIPS TO THE DEALERSHIP, IT WAS DETERMINED THAT THE IPDM MODULE WAS DEFECTIVE, AND WAS REPLACED. THIS TOOK CARE OF THE PROBLEM. I TALKED TO THE DEALERSHIP AND NISSAN, AND WAS TOLD THIS ONLY AFFECTED MY VEHICLE. HOWEVER, A RECALL WAS JUST ISSUED FOR THIS PROBLEM. THIS IS AN EXTREMELY DANGEROUS PROBLEM. THE FIRST TIME IT HAPPENED TO US, I WAS DRIVING BACK HOME WITH MY FAMILY FROM A CAMPING TRIP IN BIG BEAR, CALIFORNIA. OUR VEHICLE WAS FULLY LOADED DOWN WITH PASSENGERS AND CAMPING GEAR ON A LARGE DOWNHILL GRADE WHEN IT STALLED. SINCE THE POWER BRAKES WENT OUT, IT TOOK A LONG TIME TO GET THE VEHICLE TO STOP BY HOLDING THE BRAKES AND THE EMERGENCY BRAKE, AND FINALLY COMING TO A PORTION OF THE ROAD THAT WAS NO LONGER DOWNHILL. IF THIS HAPPENS IN THE WRONG PLACE, THIS FAILURE COULD CAUSE A CRASH, SERIOUS INJURY, OR DEATH. ALSO, WHEN THE PROBLEM OCCURS WHEN YOU ARE DRIVING, THE VEHICLE CANNOT BE RESTARTED WHILE ROLLING BY PLACING THE VEHICLE IN NEUTRAL AND TURNING THE KEY FOR THE STARTER. THE KEY MUST BE FULLY TURNED TO THE OFF POSITION FOR A FEW SECONDS,AND THEN BACK ON. ONCE THE KEY IS OFF, THE STEERING WHEEL LOCKS, SO YOU PROBABLY WON'T BE ABLE TO RESTART IT WHEN ROLLING. PLEASE MAKE SURE NISSAN CORRECTS ALL OF THE VEHICLES THAT ARE AFFECTED!!!!!!! *TR

Oct 28, 2010

NISSAN IS RECALLING CERTAIN MODEL YEAR 2004-2006 ARMADA, TITAN, INFINITI QX56 AND MODEL YEAR 2005-2006 FRONTIER, PATHFINDER AND XTERRA VEHICLES. THE INTELLIGENT POWER DISTRIBUTION MODULE (IPDM) ASSEMBLY CONTAINS AN ENGINE CONTROL MODULE (ECM) RELAY THAT HAS A DIODE FOR ELECTRICAL CURRENT NOISE REDUCTION. THE ECM RELAY MAY ALLOW SILICON VAPOR TO FORM AND, OVER TIME, THE SILICON EVAPORATES FROM THE DIODE MOLDING WHICH CAUSES SILICON OXIDE TO DEVELOP ON THE ECM RELAY CONTACT DUE TO ARCING.

Consequence & remedy

Consequence: THIS COULD CAUSE ENGINE STALLING INCREASING THE RISK OF A CRASH.

Remedy: DEALERS WILL REPLACE THE ECM RELAY INSIDE THE IPDM ASSEMBLY. THIS SERVICE WILL BE PERFORMED FREE OF CHARGE. THE SAFETY RECALL BEGAN ON DECEMBER 6, 2010. OWNERS MAY CONTACT NISSAN AT 1-800-647-7261.

Dec 29, 2008

NISSAN IS RECALLING 242,720 MY 2005-2009 PATHFINDER, FRONTIER AND XTERRA VEHICLES ORIGINALLY SOLD IN OR CURRENTLY REGISTERED IN THE STATES OF CONNECTICUT, DELAWARE, ILLINOIS, INDIANA, IOWA, MAINE, MARYLAND, MASSACHUSETTS, MICHIGAN, MINNESOTA, MISSOURI, NEW HAMPSHIRE, NEW JERSEY, NEW YORK, OHIO, PENNSYLVANIA, RHODE ISLAND, VERMONT, WEST VIRGINIA, WISCONSIN, AND THE DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA. IN THOSE AREAS OF THE COUNTRY WHICH USE HEAVY CONCENTRATIONS OF ROAD SALT IN THE WINTER, A MIXTURE OF SNOW/WATER AND SALT CAN ENTER INTO THE FRONT CRASH ZONE SENSOR (CZS) HOUSING. IF THIS OCCURS, THE CZS MAY INTERNALLY RUST RESULTING IN A SIGNAL INTERRUPTION. IF THIS HAPPENS, THE RED AIR BAG WARNING LIGHT WILL ILLUMINATE TO ALERT THE VEHICLE OPERATOR.

Consequence & remedy

Consequence: THIS ISSUE COULD RESULT IN THE NON-DEPLOYMENT OF THE DRIVER AND PASSENGER FRONT AIR BAGS IN A CRASH, INCREASING THE RISK OF PERSONAL INJURY.

Remedy: DEALERS WILL REPLACE THE FRONT CZS WITH A REDESIGNED SENSOR. THE RECALL BEGAN ON JANUARY 26, 2009. OWNERS IN THE OTHER STATES WILL RECEIVE EXTENDED WARRANTY COVERAGE FOR THE SENSOR TO 10 YEARS.
