I AM WRITING YOU WITH A CONCERN REGARDING A SERIOUS PROBLEM WITH MY 1992 NISSAN NX WHICH I BOUGHT NEW IN 1991. LAST FRIDAY I WAS RIDING ON THE BELT PARKWAY IN BROOKLYN WHEN ANOTHER DRIVER DROVE UP ALONGSIDE ME TO TELL ME THAT MY SPARE TIRE HAD JUST FALLEN OUT OF MY TRUNK. I WAS COMPLETELY STARTLED AS THERE COULD HAVE BEEN SOME MAJOR ACCIDENTS. I PULLED MY CAR OVER AND OPENED THE TRUNK AND FOUND THAT THE WHOLE TRUNK HAD RUSTED THROUGH. I WAS PRETTY SHOOK UP AS I CONTEMPLATED HOW LUCKY I WAS THAT THERE WAS NO ACCIDENTS. I THEN BECAME VERY ANGRY WHEN I SEARCHED THE WEB AND DISCOVERED THAT MANY OTHER NISSAN NX'S WERE ENCOUNTERING THE SAME PROBLEM. I DID HAVE A PRBLEM WITH MY CATALYTIC CONVERTER RUSTING AWAY A FEW YEARS AGO BUT DID NOT REALIZE THE EXTENT OF THE PROBLEM. I HAD NO REASON TO CHECK THE WHEEL WELL UNDER THE SPARE TIRE WHEN I CHECKED THE SPARE TIRE. I CAN ALSO SEND YOU PICTURES OF THE DAMAGE IF THAT WILL HELP YOU UNDERSTAND THE SERIOUSNESS OF THIS PROBLEM. *TR

97V071000 · Seat Belts:rear/other

Apr 22, 1997

THE RELEASE BUTTON USED IN THE REAR SEAT BELT BUCKLES WERE NOT MADE ACCORDING TO SPECIFICATIONS. IN HOT WEATHER, THE PLASTIC WELDS SECURING THE RELEASE BUTTON TO THE SPRING CAN FAIL RESULTING IN PARTIAL ENGAGEMENT OF THE SEAT BELT TONGUE IN THE BUCKLE OR NOT BEING ABLE TO LATCH THE SEAT BELT.

Consequence & remedy

Consequence: IF A PARTIAL ENGAGEMENT OCCURS, THIS CAN CAUSE THE SEAT BELT TONGUE TO COME OUT OF THE BUCKLE IN THE EVENT OF A CRASH OR HARD BRAKING OF THE VEHICLE.

Remedy: DEALERS WILL REPLACE ALL REAR SEAT BELT BUCKLES WITH NEW SEAT BELT BUCKLES.
