THE FUEL PUMP SHORTED OUT INSIDE THE FUEL TANK. WE WERE TOLD THIS COULD HAVE CAUSED A VERY LARGE EXPOLOSION, KILLING EVERYONE INSIDE THE VEHICLE AND ANYONE NEAR BY. WE HAVE THE FAULTY FUEL PUMP, WHICH CLEARLY SHOWS BURN MARKS. A MITSUBISHI CUSTOMER SERVICE REPRESENATIVE ASSURED ME THE VEHICLE WOULD NOT HAVE EXPLODED; HOWEVER, HE COULD OR WOULD NOT EXPLAIN WHAT SAFETY DEVICES MIGHT BE IN PLACE TO PREVENT SUCH AN EXPLOSION. I AM TRADING THIS VEHICLE TOMORROW (JUNE 18) BECAUSE I AM AFRAID TO DRIVE IT. THE VEHICLE IS IN THE REPAIR SHOP HAVING THE FUEL PUMP REPLACED SO I CANNOT PROVIDE THE VIN # AT THIS TIME; HOWEVER, I WILL HAVE ANY FURTHER INFORMATION YOU MAY REQUIRE SHOULD YOU WISH TO FOLLOW UP ON THIS REPORT. *AK

Remedy: ON THE MIRAGE VEHICLES, THE DEALERS WILL INSTALL A NEW, IMPROVED CRANKSHAFT PULLEY BOLT ON THE OLDER ENGINES. ON NEW ENGINES WHICH ALREADY HAVE THE IMPROVED BOLT, THE DEALER WILL TIGHTEN THE CRANKSHAFT PULLEY BOLT TO THE CORRECT TORQUE SPECIFICATION. ON THE MONTERO MODELS, DEALERS WILL TIGHTEN THE CRANKSHAFT PULLEY BOLT TO THE CORRECT TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS. IF THE BOLT IS DAMAGED, IT WILL BE REPLACED.
