2009 MINI COOPER S - I, LIKE SO MANY OTHER MINI COOPER OWNERS, HAVE JUST FALLEN VICTIM TO THE "DEATH RATTLE" OF THE [KNOWN BY BMW] DEFECTIVE/FAULTY AND NON-RECALLED TIMING CHAIN ISSUE. IT'S ABSURD THAT WE CONTINUE TO EXPOSE THIS FAR TOO COMMON DEFECT OF A PRODUCT THAT WAS ORIGINALLY DEEMED AS A "NON-SERVICE" ITEM GOOD FOR THE OPERATING LIFE OF THE ENGINE. MOST OWNERS EXPERIENCE PROBLEMS WITHIN THE FIRST 50,000 MILES. I PURCHASED THIS WELL MAINTAINED (AT A LOCAL MINI DEALER) MINI FROM A PRIVATE PARTY JUST DAYS AFTER THEY PERFORMED AN EXPENSIVE 'WALNUT TREATMENT' TO CLEAR OUT EXCESSIVE CARBON BUILD UP. WITHIN 100MI OF THIS SERVICE, THE 'DEATH RATTLE' STARTS. I AM NOW BEING TOLD THAT IT WILL RUN JUST OVER $2400 (I'VE UNCOVERED ABOUT $400 IN TOTAL PARTS) TO CORRECT AN ISSUE BMW HAS BEEN HIDING BEHIND FOR YEARS; THEY'VE EVEN ISSUED A WARNING TO SERVICE ADVISORS TO NOT RE-INSTALL THE DEFECTIVE PARTS, BUT DENY THE PART TO ACTUALLY BE DEFECTIVE OR IN NEED OF RECALL. WHEN WILL ANYONE STAND UP FOR THE LITTLE GUY, THE CONSUMER, AND DEMAND THIS WELL KNOWN, OFTEN OCCURRING, EXTREMELY EXPENSIVE AND POTENTIALLY DANGEROUS DEFECT BE CORRECTED AT THE COST OF THE MANUFACTURER? I NOW HAVE AN $11,500 PAPER WEIGHT. *TR

I WAS DRIVING MY MINI COOPER ON I-95 WHEN THE I NOTICED A VERY STRONG BURNING SMELL AND THE CLUTCH WAS GIVING ME DIFFICULTY CHANGING GEARS. AS I WAS GETTING OFF I-95 THE GEARS WERE NOT RESPONDING AND THE CAR BEGAN TO SLOW DOWN. I GOT OFF I-95 AND JUST MADE IT TO A MAIN BLVD. WHEN THE CLUTCH GAVE OUT AND THE CAR WOULD NOT MOVE. I COULD SEE THE CARS IN THE REAR VIEW MIRROR COMING AT FULL SPEED AND HONKING AT ME TO MOVE OUT OF THE OF THE WAY. I CALLED 911 AND ASKED FOR A PATROL TO SPOT TRAFFIC AND THEN TRIED TO GET OUT OF THE CAR TO ASK FOR HELP BUT ALMOST GOT RAN OVER BY CARS PASSING BY. I THOUGHT I WAS GOING TO GET EITHER HIT OR KILLED. TWO MAN IN A VAN STOPPED AND PUSHED MY CAR OUT OF THE WAY UNTIL THE TRUCK STOPPED. THE POLICE CAR NEVER SHOWED UP. A WEST PALM BRAMAN MINI COOPER SERVICE MAN WAS DRIVING BY AND TOLD ME THE CLUTCH WAS COMPLETELY BURNT OUT AND TO TOW THE CAR TO HIS FACILITY. I DID AND MINI COOPER REFUSED TO FIX IT EVEN THOUGH THEY ARE AWARE OF THE DEFECT AND THE MANY COMPLAINTS. THEY TRIED TO TELL ME THE CLUTCH WAS WORN OUT BUT THE CAR ONLY HAS 13,000 MILES, THEY ALSO TRIED TO BLAME IT ON AGGRESSIVE DRIVING OR THAT I DID NOT KNOW HOW TO DRIVE A STANDARD TRANSMISSION. I TOLD THEM I DRIVE VERY SLOW AND HAVE BEEN DRIVING STANDARD TRANSMISSION MY ENTIRE LIFE. THEY JUST REFUSE TO ACKNOWLEDGE THE MANUFACTURING DEFECT. PLEASE MAKE SURE THAT SOMEONE LOOKS INTO THIS SO THAT NO ONE HAS TO FACE THE SAME DANGER I DID OR EVEN WORSE, BE KILLED. *TR

ONCE IT WAS INSTALLED I WAS INFORMED THAT THE TURBO LINE IS FAILING AND THE DEALER WANTS TO CHARGE ME $1500 TO REPAIR THE LEAKING LINE. THE FAILURE OF THE LINE IS OBVIOUSLY DUE TO EXCESSIVE HEAT AROUND THIS LINE... THE SAME REASON THEY ARE INSTALLING A HEAT SHIELD. THIS IS RIDICULOUS AND THE ITEM SHOULD BE RECALLED AND REPLACED! *TR

DRIVING ON 405 FWY IN SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA TURNING OUT OF FREEWAY OFF RAMP IN THE POURING RAIN. THE CAR DEAD STOPPED. VERY DANGEROUS, CARS COMING OFF FREEWAY BEHIND ME WAS A 911 SITUATION. AFTER SOMEONE PUSHED ME OFF TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD HAD CAR TOWED. NO ENGINE LIGHT WARNING TO INDICATE PROBLEM OF TENSIONER (TIMING CHAIN BREAKAGE). ENTIRE ENGINE WAS REPLACED/REBUILT BECAUSE OF EXTENSIVE DAMAGE TO ENGINE. BMW APPARENTLY IS AWARE OF THE TIMING CHAIN DEFECT AND HAS NOT ISSUED SERVICE BULLETIN OR RECALL. I'M HEARING THERE IS A CLASS ACTION SUIT BECAUSE OF THE MANY COMPLAINTS. THE FACT THAT I COULD HAVE VERY EASILY BEEN KILLED OR SERIOUSLY INJURED IS WHY I AM ISSUING A COMPLAINT (NOT TO MENTION MY BILL FOR $6200.00 I HAVE ON MY CREDIT CARD) AND THE THREE WEEKS IT TOOK TO FIX. In a January 10, 2012 letter to NHTSA, BMW of North America, LLC. (BMW) submitted a Defect Information Report (DIR) identifying a defect in the electric auxiliary water pump in approximately 88,911 model year (MY) 2007-2011 Mini Cooper vehicles manufactured from November 14, 2006 through January 18, 2011 (Recall 12V-008).According to BMW, the auxiliary water pump on vehicles equipped with 4-cylinder turbocharged engines may overheat.Electro-migration can cause the pump electronic circuit board to overheat resulting in smoldering of the water pump. If smoldering occurs, it may lead to an engine compartment or vehicle fire. The pump supplier, Pierburg Pump Technology GmbH, redesigned the pump to address factors that may contribute to circuit board overheating. The redesigned pumps were completely implemented in production vehicles by January 2011.Recall 12V-008 was the third recall initiated by BMW to address electric auxiliary water pump fires in vehicles equipped with Pierburg pumps. In two October 20, 2011 letters to NHTSA, BMW submitted DIRs for similar auxiliary water pump defect conditions in approximately 32,084 MY 2008-2011 BMW 5-Series, 7-Series, X5 and X6 models equipped with 8- and 12-cylinder engines and manufactured from May 2008 through December 2010 (Recall 11V-521); and for approximately 589 MY 2010 Rolls-Royce Ghost vehicles manufactured from September 2009 through September 2010 (Recall 11V-522).In three separate April 5, 2012 letters to NHTSA, BMW submitted amendments to Recalls 11V-521, 11V-522 and 12V-008.The amendments all described a common defect condition related to a manufacturing process deviation in a certain production range of the redesigned Pierburg water pumps that could result in cracks in the pump housing, which may allow coolant to enter and contact the pump?s circuit board.BMW indicated that further analysis identified a specific machine process error at the sub-supplier that manufactures the water pump housing.Pump housing cracks may cause the circuit board to overheat and lead to smoldering of the water pump.Recall 12V-008 was, thus, amended to include approximately 1,457 MY 2011 Mini Cooper vehicles manufactured from March 31, 2011 through April 22, 2011, when pumps manufactured with the suspect manufacturing process may have been used in vehicle assembly. The amendment to Recall 11V-521 was assigned a new recall number, Recall 12V-161, and covered approximately 2,846 MY 2011-2012 BMW 5-Series, 6-Series, 7-Series, X5, and X6 vehicles manufactured from April 1, 2011 through August 1, 2011.The amendment to Recall 11V-522 was assigned a new recall number, Recall 12V-166, and covered approximately 69 MY 2011 Rolls-Royce Ghost vehicles manufactured from April 7, 2011 through June 2, 2011.The Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) analyzed complaint data provided by BMW as well as complaints submitted to ODI from consumers. In total, there were 30 unique Mini Cooper reports indicating engine fire.In addition, BMW provided warranty data showing 493 claims for replacement of the subject component on Mini Cooper vehicles.Owners of the recalled vehicles are notified to take their vehicle to a BMW dealer, who will replace the auxiliary water pump to prevent any incidents related to this issue. This preliminary evaluation is closed. The ODI reports cited above can be viewed at www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/owners/SearchNHTSAID under the following identification numbers (ODI Nos.):10286597, 10286663, 10289793, 10310677, 10314796, 10342365, 10394808, 10394192, 10403982, 10418325, 10422646, 10429003.
