The contact owns a 2022 Mercedes-Benz S 580. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed, the messages "Active Brake Assist Functions Currently Limited - See Owner's Manual", "Risk of Vehicle Rolling Away - N Activated Manually No Automatic Change To P", "Service Required Do Not Change Transmission Position", and "Active Parking Assist And Parktronic Inoperative - See Owner's Manual" were displayed, and an unknown warning light was illuminated. Additionally, the vehicle had experienced phantom braking and the transmission failed to shift into park(P) as needed. The contact moved the gear shifter back and forth before the proper gear was recognized. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, who determined that the steering column needed to be replaced. The contact emailed the manufacturer regarding the failure, but the email was returned as undeliverable. The failure mileage was approximately 18,000.

Due to a software error in the hand detection control unit, the hands-off detection might not detect when the driver's hands are away from the steering wheel when using the Active Distance Assist DISTRONIC system.
