2017 Mercedes-Benz GLE350, VIN [XXX]. While driving, the vehicle intermittently displays multiple warning lights/messages and the power-steering assistance intermittently becomes heavy/stiff. The warnings rapidly appear and disappear and the problem can occur repeatedly while the vehicle is being driven. Pressing/tapping around the front passenger-side floor/kick-panel area can sometimes cause the warnings to clear. The problem appears more frequently in hot daytime conditions and can occur after the vehicle has been running. The engine continues running normally during the events. The vehicle has previously displayed communication-related faults. Mercedes-Benz previously performed Campaign 2023010002 involving inspection for water intrusion in the spare-wheel well; that repair order states no moisture was found in that location and the indicated drain grommet was replaced. The current problem persists. I am concerned because the intermittent loss/reduction of power-steering assistance while driving creates a safety risk. I am also aware of NHTSA Campaign 17V-241 involving water intrusion at the electric power-steering connector and loss of steering assistance on certain Mercedes vehicles. My VIN currently shows no open recalls. I am reporting my vehicle's symptoms so NHTSA can evaluate whether this represents a similar or related safety defect. The contact owns a 2017 Mercedes GLE. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed, he became aware that the electronic power steering was not functioning properly. The contact was able to pull to the shoulder of the roadway, where the failure persisted. The vehicle was towed to the dealer, who diagnosed a failure with the electronic power steering. The vehicle was repaired. After investigating the failure, the contact related the failure to NHTSA Campaign Number: 17V574000 (Steering), but the VIN was not included. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 23,000.

While traveling at approximately 45 MPH in multi-lane highway traffic, WITHOUT WARNING the vehicle's power steering suddenly failed. Concurrently a red display message appeared in the instrument cluster stating "Power Steering Malfunction - See Owner's Manual". ALL steering assistance was lost at that point and the vehicle had to be maneuvered with great effort out of traffic to a safe offroad location. Vehicle is a 2017 Mercedes GLE 350 (166 chassis) with 22,000 miles. Initial inspection of the vehicle by a Mercedes mechanic revealed a fault in the EPS (electrical power steering), and the presence of fault code P063500. Subsequent inspection of the vehicle by the local Mercedes dealer revealed the same fault code along with the advisory that the vehicle is "technically not safe to drive..." and that a new electric power steering rack is required. Service advisor further offered the comment that "1-2 vehicles present like this monthly." Online search of Mercedes Xentry Tips for fault code P063500 reveals topic number LI46.35-P-0555436 (dated 01-12-2017), with the acknowledgement of power steering malfunction occurrences in model 204, 207 and 212 vehicles. No reference is made to model 166 vehicles. Mention is made of performing a software update of the electric power steering control unit via "Adaptations" in the 204, 207 and 212 vehicles.

The contact owns a 2017 Mercedes-Benz GLE350. The contact stated while driving 20 MPH, the message "Power Steering Malfunction. See Operator Manual" was displayed. The steering became extremely difficult to turn. The contact was unable to maneuver the steering wheel and stopped the vehicle. The contact was able to veer to the side of the road with the assistance of a bystander who drove the vehicle. The contact stated that upon turning off and restarting the vehicle, the warning message disappeared, and the vehicle regained power steering functionality. The contact was able to drive the vehicle to her residence; however, the failure reoccurred while driving. The vehicle was towed to the dealer where it was diagnosed that the actuator module and the steering rack needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The contact was awaiting a call back from the manufacturer. The failure mileage was approximately 11,000. The contact stated that the manufacturer did not offer much help. The dealer eventually offered to help pay for half of the cost and repairs were made.

The vehicle only has about 10K+ miles but encountered "Power Steering Malfunction See Operator’s Manual" error message, and then the Power Steering stopped working, became stiff, and could not be moved. The vehicle got stuck in the mid of the road becoming very dangerous for the driver, passengers, and all other moving vehicles on the road too. The vehicle was taken to a dealer who said that the Powering Steer Rack was not working and needed to be replaced. The cost is about $7000. Mercedes had multiple recalls for very similar Power Steer problems in the past a few years including vehicles made in the same year as mine (2017). However they never included the GLE model in their recalls in the past. Apparently GLE was affected by the wide-spread Power Steer Malfunction problem which they already knew about.

I had to turn off the vehicle and restart in order to have it change gear. This was dangerous as when the vehicle failed it was in the line of traffic flow and if another vehicle had not seen me in time it would have caused a collision. Component has not been inspected by police or insurance as of yet but I do have it into Mercedes dealer for inspection as of right now There were no warning lamps or alerts lit at the time or before the failure I Purchased the vehicle in Texas in 2017 while I lived there, but I have in the last couple months relocated to Canada so I provided my old address associated with the vehicle and the Mercedes customer database, but I do not have a home in Canada as of yet and I am staying with relatives. (MBUSA) is recalling certain 2012-2014 ML550, 2012-2015 ML350, AMG ML63, 2015 ML250, ML400, 2016 GLE450, GLE300, 2016-2018 GLE350, GLE550, 2016-2019 GLE400, 2017-2019 AMG GLE43, and 2016-2020 AMG GLE63 vehicles. Water might accumulate in the spare tire wheel well and damage the fuel pump control unit, which could cause an engine stall while driving.
Consequence & remedy
Consequence: An engine stall while driving increases the risk of a crash.
Remedy: Dealers will install a water drain plug, inspect for water intrusion, and replace the fuel pump control unit as necessary, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed February 15, 2023. Owners may contact MBUSA customer service at 1-800-367-6372. MBUSA's numbers for this recall are 2023010002 and 2023010003.

On June 18, 2021, an additional 9 vehicles were added, including certain 2021 GLA250, GLC300, 2018 S450, E400, and 2017 CLA250 vehicles. The communication module might have been inadvertently deactivated during a service visit, which could have disabled the Emergency Call (eCall) function.
Consequence & remedy
Consequence: A disabled eCall system would prevent a vehicle occupant from contacting emergency services through the call center in an emergency, potentially delaying emergency responders and increasing the risk of injury.

Mercedes-Benz USA, LLC (MBUSA) is recalling certain 2017 GLE400 4Matic, GLE350 4Matic, GLE350, GLE550e 4Matic, GLE43 AMG 4Matic, GLE63 AMG 4Matic, GLS450, GLE63S 4Matic, GLS63 4Matic, S550e, S600, S63 AMG 4Matic, S65 AMG, S550, Mercedes-Maybach S600, Mercedes-Maybach S550 4Matic, GLE43 AMG 4Matic Coupe, GLE63S 4Matic Coupe, 2017-2018 GLS550 4Matic, S550 4Matic, 2018 S450, and S63 AMG 4Matic vehicles. The rear passenger door on the driver side may indicate that it is locked, when it may not be. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 206, "Door Locks and Door Retention Components."
Consequence & remedy
Consequence: If the door appears to be locked, the door may be unintentionally opened, increasing the risk of injury.
Remedy: MBUSA will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the left rear door lock, replacing it as necessary, free of charge. The recall is expected to begin in January 2018. Owners may contact MBUSA customer service at 1-877-496-3691.

Mercedes-Benz USA, LLC (MBUSA) is recalling certain 2017 GLE 400 4Matic, GLE 350 4Matic, GLE 350, GLE 550E 4Matic, GLE 63 AMG, GLE 63S AMG, GLE 43 AMG 4Matic Coupe, GLE 63S AMG 4Matic Coupe, GLS 450 4Matic, GLS 550 4Matic, and GLS 63 AMG 4Matic vehicles. In certain types of crash events, the center console may unlatch, allowing the objects within to fly around the cabin. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 201, "Occupant Protection in Interior Impact."
Consequence & remedy
Consequence: In the event of a crash, if objects are not secured within the center console, they may strike the vehicle occupants, increasing their risk of injury.
Remedy: MBUSA will notify owners, and dealers will modify the center console so that it remains latched in a crash, free of charge. The recall is expected to begin in early March 2017. Owners may contact MBUSA customer service at 1-800-367-6372.

Mercedes-Benz USA, LLC (MBUSA) is recalling certain model year 2016-2017 GLE 300d 4MATIC, GLE 350, GLE 350 4MATIC, and GLE 400 4MATIC vehicles manufactured October 14, 2015, to November 23, 2015. The low beam headlights on the affected vehicles may not be properly adjusted. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 108, "Lamps, Reflective Devices, and Assoc. Equipment."
Consequence & remedy
Consequence: If the low-beam headlights are out of adjustment, the driver's visibility may be reduced, increasing the risk of a crash.
Remedy: MBUSA will notify owners, and dealers will inspect and correct the headlight adjustment, as necessary, free of charge. The recall is expected to begin in November 2016. Owners may contact MBUSA customer service at 1-800-367-6372.
