THE RECALL FOLLOWS AN INVESTIGATION FROM THE NATIONAL HIGHWAY TRAFFIC SAFETY ADMINISTRATION (NHTSA), LOOKING INTO POWER-STEERING SYSTEM FAILURES IN THE 2007-2009 MAZDA3. ALTOGETHER, 33 COMPLAINTS WERE RECEIVED AND THREE CRASHES WERE ATTRIBUTED TO THE ISSUE. THE RECALL AFFECTS ABOUT 300,000 NORTH AMERICAN VEHICLES ALTOGETHER, INCLUDING SOME 2007 MODELS, ALL 2008 MODELS, AND MOST 2009 MODELS OF THE MAZDA3 AND MAZDA5. A MAZDA SOURCE TOLD THE PUBLICATION THAT RUST CONTAMINATION IN THE VEHICLES' HYDRAULIC STEERING SYSTEM CAN CAUSE THE PUMP TO OVERHEAT AND SHUT DOWN, SOMETIMES TEMPORARILY. A SERVICE BULLETIN HAS ALREADY BEEN OUT FOR MORE THAN A YEAR. *TR

MY VEHICLE WAS STOPPED AT AN INTERSECTION AS I WAS WAITING FOR AN OPPORTUNITY TO MAKE A LEFT TURN. AS I WAS THEN MAKING A LEFT TURN, I REALIZED THAT I HAD LOST POWER STEERING AND I THOUGHT THAT THE VEHICLE WOULD COMPLETELY LOSE ALL OF ITS POWER AND HENCE, ITS ABILITY TO MOVE AND CAUSE ME TO COME TO A HALT IN THE MIDDLE OF THE INTERSECTION. THERE WAS AN ONCOMING CAR, SO I JUST STRUGGLED TO TURN THE WHEEL WHILE I PUSHED DOWN THE ACCELERATOR. THANKFULLY, I MADE IT OUT OF THE INTERSECTION ON TIME. HOWEVER, THIS SITUATION COULD HAVE HAD A COMPLETELY DIFFERENT OUTCOME. AFTER IT HAPPENED A NUMBER OF TIMES, I DECIDED TO DO SOME RESEARCH AND FOUND THAT THERE WAS A RECALL ON SOME OF THE 2007 TO 2009 MAZDA 5 MODELS DUE TO POWER STEERING LOSS. I TOOK MY CAR TO MY LOCAL MAZDA DEALER, BUT WAS TOLD THAT MY VIN NUMBER WAS NOT INCLUDED IN THE RECALL. I THEN CALLED MAZDA TO HAVE MY VIN INCLUDED IN THE RECALL, BUT WAS DENIED BECAUSE I WAS TOLD THAT MY CAR WAS MANUFACTURED IN 11/09/06, AND THUS CANNOT BE INCLUDED. I FEEL THAT MY VEHICLE SHOULD BE INCLUDED IN THE RECALL AND SO I ASK THAT YOU DO INVESTIGATION ON SIMILAR SITUATIONS, AS THIS IS A VERY SERIOUS ISSUE THAT SHOULD BE ADDRESSED AS SOON AS POSSIBLE. THANK YOU.

The subject vehicles have electro-hydraulic power assist steering (EHPAS).The complaint counts shown above alleged a loss of power steering assist in the subject vehicles.Usually, but not always, the loss is accompanied by the simultaneous lighting of an indicator light on the dash. The complaints include 14 alleged crashes involving 6 injuries. On Mazda3 and Mazda5 vehicles manufactured from April 2, 2007 through November 30, 2008, rust may have formed inside the EPAS high-pressure pipe during manufacture due to improper processing. If the rust is present it may damage the power steering pump bearings leading to an increased load on the electric motor; this results in an elevated operating temperature for the EPAS system. To prevent excessive overheating of the system, which could potentially cause permanent damage, afailsafe mode which de-powers the electric pump is implemented. This causes a loss of power assist making it more difficult to steer the vehicle, especially at lower vehicle speeds.Once the failsafe is implemented the EPAS system will remain disabled until the ignition is turned off. However EPAS will be re-enabled if the operating temperature is reduced (i.e., within an acceptable range) on a subsequent drive cycle. On August 8, 2010 Mazda submitted a Part 573 defect information report initiating Safety Recall 10V-374 to remedy the subject vehicles. The report, which contains additional details on the remedy repair, is available at http://www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/recalls/.ODI notes that the affected population shown in that report includes approximately 8,000 vehicles Mazda repaired prior to initiating the recall.
