The contact owns a 2018 Land Rover Range Rover. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed, the message flashing forward alert not available, brake assist not available, transmission fault, AEB not available, HDC not available were displayed. Additionally, the stability control, forward alert not available, Emergency brake assist not available, and transmission fault warning lights were illuminated. The contact stated that on several occasions after restarting the vehicle, the warning lights were no longer displayed; however, the transmission malfunctioned, and the vehicle failed to immediately drive forward. The vehicle was taken to the local dealer and was diagnosed with engine failure. The engine was replaced, but after retrieving the vehicle, the failures immediately reoccurred. The vehicle was taken back to the dealer. The cause of the failures was not yet determined. The failure mileage was 67,000

Following a routine oil and filter service and starter motor replacement at an authorized Land Rover dealer, the engine seized within 21 miles of vehicle delivery. The vehicle was brought to the dealer for a no-start condition. A prior independent shop had evaluated the vehicle and found exclusively electrical issues — no engine, fluid, or cooling concerns. The dealer performed a multi-point inspection confirming no fluid leaks and no engine concerns. The dealer then performed an oil and filter service and starter motor replacement. The dealer's own technician notes state the vehicle was started and the concern was confirmed rectified. One mile was driven across nine days of service. Fourteen minutes after taking delivery, warning lights appeared. The following morning, a RED Engine Overheating warning illuminated. The engine seized shortly thereafter, rendering the vehicle inoperable on a public road. The dealer confirmed in writing: spun bearing, rod knock, and metal shavings throughout the engine. The dealer's Service Manager also confirmed in writing that drained oil is not examined for metal contamination as part of their standard oil change procedure. A bearing in pre-failure condition sheds metal particulate into engine oil. This metal contamination would have been detectable in the drained oil had it been examined. The vehicle is currently inoperable and in the dealer's custody. The component is available for inspection upon request. Warning lamps appeared 14 minutes post-delivery. No warning lamps were present before the service visit. Problem has been confirmed by the dealer.

The infotainment system in this 2018 Range Rover has exhibited a recurring defect since at least January 2026. The defect manifests in multiple ways: the upper screen intermittently goes blank, the lower screen has been observed stuck flashing, and audio output skips and varies in speed during playback. The system integrates with the rear camera display, audible alerts, and climate controls, so a malfunction affects functions relied upon during vehicle operation, including rear visibility when reversing. The component is available for inspection upon request. On June 15, 2026, while driving on a freeway, the upper screen went blank momentarily without warning. The blackout occurred during normal driving conditions, with no prior warning lamps or alerts, and was unsettling under the circumstances. The vehicle remained controllable, but the incident raised a safety concern because a sudden display blackout at freeway speed is a distraction risk, and because the system is integrated with safety-relevant display and alert functions. The defect has been presented to the authorized dealer multiple times since January 2026. The January service order documented the concern as a continuation of issues following a prior recall and was classified as a warranty matter. The dealer reported being unable to reproduce the defect during a road test. The vehicle was returned for the same concern in April 2026. The dealer's records note updates performed to the IPC, ICDM, AAM, and IDMA modules and again report inability to duplicate the concern despite multiple video recordings of the defect previously submitted to the service department. The defect has continued to manifest after the April service visit, including the June 15 freeway incident. The dealer's repeated inability to reproduce the defect during diagnostic visits does not reflect the actual behavior of the system in regular driving use, where the defect occurs intermittently and without warning. Repeated issues of low cooling warning leading to engine overheating - severely resulting in tow in. Prior Land Rover dealer repair (prior to my purchase under certified warranty) was inadequate, causing coolant crossovers in front and rear to be cracked. Engine overheated steamed close to home, and vehicle towed in to LR dealer in area. Took two months to repair and at time, they thought engine was blown, but assured me repairs complete. Within 6 months, same warning light, took to LR Dallas dealer and said no issue. Within 13 months of major repair, taken into LR Dallas dealer, and now told I need a brand new engine. Repeated repairs the same engine defect, issue and now LR won't repair under warranty (now) when I was told a few weeks ago, they would repair with new engine. Now, have a completely worthless car, that was certified 2.75 years ago. Total shop time for all this 5 months and counting.
Jaguar Land Rover North America, LLC (Land Rover) is recalling certain 2018-2022 Range Rover and Range Rover Sport vehicles equipped with a Surround Camera System. Water may enter into the rearview camera, which can cause the rearview camera image not to appear on the display or display a distorted image. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 111, "Rear Visibility."
Consequence & remedy
Consequence: A rearview camera image that does not display while in reverse decreases the driver's visibility, increasing the risk of injury or crash.
Remedy: Dealers will inspect the rearview camera and add a new seal or replace the camera, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed to Range Rover owners March 4, 2024. Interim notification letters were mailed to Range Rover Sport owners March 7, 2024. Range Rover Sport owners will receive a second notice once remedy parts become available. Owners may contact Land Rover customer service at 1-800-637-6837. Land Rover's number for this recall is N778.

The Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) is upgrading its Preliminary Evaluation (PE25006) of front steering knuckle fractures on model year (MY) 2014 through 2017 Range Rover Sport vehicles to an Engineering Analysis. ODI opened PE25006 on June 27, 2025, after receiving 12 Vehicle Owner's Questionnaire (VOQ) reports of the front aluminum steering knuckles fracturing in these vehicles. The reports describe the fractures occurring at the joint where the steering knuckle attaches to the upper control arm ball joint in one or both steering knuckles. Fracture of the front suspension knuckle can lead to detachment of the upper suspension arm. Detachment of the upper suspension arm results in the driver’s inability to control the vehicle, increasing the risk of a crash. ODI reviewed information supplied by Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) in response to Information Request letters as well as reviewed the data with JLR on numerous occasions. ODI further reviewed relevant data on a peer vehicle with a significantly similar steering knuckle design, the MY 2014 through 2017 Range Rover. Much of the information is contradictory and requires a deeper analysis that is available in an Engineering Analysis. On August 5, 2025, Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) filed safety recall 25V514. This recall covers certain MY 2014 and all MY 2015-2017 Range Rover and Range Rover Sport vehicles. The remedy for recall 25V514 addresses knuckles with and without a visible fracture. Knuckles that have developed a visible fracture will be replaced with a new knuckle of a substantially similar design. Knuckles with no fracture visibly present will have a brace attached to the upper portion of the front steering knuckle. JLR states that the purpose of the brace is to prevent the component from completely separating should a fracture develop. NHTSA continues to receive allegations of fractures occurring in the front steering knuckles of Range Rover and Range Rover Sport vehicles. Two of the most recent VOQs received by ODI involve front steering knuckle fractures occurring on MY 2020 and MY 2021 Range Rover L405 vehicles. ODI will continue to investigate the component design and assess the potential safety risk as part of this Engineering Analysis and evaluate the recall remedies for Recall 25V514. Further, the scope of this Engineering Analysis will be expanded to include MY 2018-2022 Range Rover and Range Rover Sport vehicles as they have a substantially similar component design.
