THE 2018 RANGE ROVER SPORT HAS NO FAILSAFE IN THE SOFT CLOSE DOOR MECHANISM; I FOUND THIS OUT THE HARD WAY. AS LONG AS THE LATCH CATCHES, THE SOFT CLOSE WILL ENGAGE. I WAS EXITING MY STATIONARY VEHICLE WHEN A GUST OF WIND HIT THE DOOR. MY HAND WAS STILL ON THE EDGE OF THE DOOR WHEN THE LATCH FOR THE SOFT CLOSE HIT. MY THUMB WAS CRUSHED BETWEEN THE DOOR AND THE FRAME. I FORCED MY THUMB OUT WHILE THE DOOR CONTINUED TO TIGHTEN UNTIL FULLY CLOSED. IT'S BEEN NEARLY A MONTH AND MY THUMB IS STILL PURPLE. IF THE CAR WOULD HAVE SENSED MY THUMB IN BETWEEN THE DOOR AND FRAME, AND STOPPED THE SOFT CLOSE, I COULD HAVE EASILY REMOVED MY FINGER WITH NO INJURY. INSTEAD, I SPENT THE NEXT 2 HOURS AT THE EMERGENCY ROOM. I HAVE IMAGES OF THE INJURY AND A VIDEO DEMONSTRATING THE SAFETY ISSUE. I AM PARANOID GETTING IN AND OUT OF MY RANGE ROVER AFTER WHAT HAPPENED TO ME AND I AM VERY CONCERNED FOR THE SAFETY OF OTHERS (ESPECIALLY YOUNG CHILDREN.) I ALSO LEARNED THAT THE HEAD MECHANIC AT THE SHOP EXPERIENCED A VERY SIMILAR INJURY WHILE WORKING ON A CAR WITH SOFT CLOSE DOORS. I WOULD LIKE TO DISCUSS A PRODUCT RECALL OR A NEW REGULATION. FOR EXAMPLE, THE DOOR SILL OF CARS EQUIPPED WITH SOFT CLOSE COULD REQUIRE A WARNING STICKER OR THE SOFT CLOSE MECHANISMS COULD EVEN REQUIRE A REJECTION MECHANISM. Jaguar Land Rover North America, LLC (Land Rover) is recalling certain 2018-2022 Range Rover Sport vehicles equipped with a Surround Camera System. Water may enter into the rearview camera, which can cause the rearview camera image not to appear on the display or display a distorted image. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 111, "Rear Visibility."
Consequence & remedy
Consequence: A rearview camera image that does not display can decrease the driver's visibility, increasing the risk of injury or crash.
Remedy: Dealers will inspect the rearview camera for damage. If no damage is found, the camera will be fitted with a new seal. If damage is found, the camera will be replaced and calibrated. Repairs will be performed free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed July 18, 2024. Owners may contact Land Rover customer service at 1-800-637-6837. Land Rover's number for this recall is N901. These vehicles were previously recalled under 24V-023 for this same issue and will need to have the new remedy completed.

Remedy: Dealers will inspect the rearview camera and add a new seal or replace the camera, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed to Range Rover owners March 4, 2024. Interim notification letters were mailed to Range Rover Sport owners March 7, 2024. Range Rover Sport owners will receive a second notice once remedy parts become available. Consequence: If the AEB does not intervene when needed, without warning, there would be an increased risk of a crash.

The Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) is upgrading its Preliminary Evaluation (PE25006) of front steering knuckle fractures on model year (MY) 2014 through 2017 Range Rover Sport vehicles to an Engineering Analysis. ODI opened PE25006 on June 27, 2025, after receiving 12 Vehicle Owner's Questionnaire (VOQ) reports of the front aluminum steering knuckles fracturing in these vehicles. The reports describe the fractures occurring at the joint where the steering knuckle attaches to the upper control arm ball joint in one or both steering knuckles. Fracture of the front suspension knuckle can lead to detachment of the upper suspension arm. Detachment of the upper suspension arm results in the driver’s inability to control the vehicle, increasing the risk of a crash. ODI reviewed information supplied by Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) in response to Information Request letters as well as reviewed the data with JLR on numerous occasions. ODI further reviewed relevant data on a peer vehicle with a significantly similar steering knuckle design, the MY 2014 through 2017 Range Rover. Much of the information is contradictory and requires a deeper analysis that is available in an Engineering Analysis. On August 5, 2025, Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) filed safety recall 25V514. This recall covers certain MY 2014 and all MY 2015-2017 Range Rover and Range Rover Sport vehicles. The remedy for recall 25V514 addresses knuckles with and without a visible fracture. Knuckles that have developed a visible fracture will be replaced with a new knuckle of a substantially similar design. Knuckles with no fracture visibly present will have a brace attached to the upper portion of the front steering knuckle. JLR states that the purpose of the brace is to prevent the component from completely separating should a fracture develop. NHTSA continues to receive allegations of fractures occurring in the front steering knuckles of Range Rover and Range Rover Sport vehicles. Two of the most recent VOQs received by ODI involve front steering knuckle fractures occurring on MY 2020 and MY 2021 Range Rover L405 vehicles. ODI will continue to investigate the component design and assess the potential safety risk as part of this Engineering Analysis and evaluate the recall remedies for Recall 25V514. Further, the scope of this Engineering Analysis will be expanded to include MY 2018-2022 Range Rover and Range Rover Sport vehicles as they have a substantially similar component design.
