The contact owns a 2022 Jeep Wagoneer. The contact stated that while driving under 5 MPH, the vehicle shut off and was rear-ended by a pickup truck. The vehicle was towed to an undisclosed location. The low battery reserve message was displayed afterwards on two occasions. The contact stated the failure was like the failure listed in NHTSA Action Number: PE24018 (ELECTRICAL SYSTEM, HYBRID PROPULSION SYSTEM, ENGINE, ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING). The Jeep manufacturer was contacted by phone on several occasions, and the contact spoke with a representative. The local dealer associated the failure with the auxiliary battery. The contact was informed that the auxiliary battery needed to be replaced. The failure mileage was approximately 82,000.

Battery light came on and showed low voltage while driving down the highway along with a loud sound. Also the icon with a red A and a circle around it came on, the lights and icons starting signaling. The steering wheel instantly became difficult to turn and control. My car blew an engine while I was inside the car. The car was in park and running in a parking lot when the parking brake automatically engaged unexpectedly. Then, the gauge cluster instructed me to press the brake and push the start/stop button. I then got a warning on my gauge cluster, this time notifying my car entered starter protection mode. Repeating the process three times, me, my four year-old daughter, and were put at high risk of suffering burns as my car started to give off a burning smell of oil, as well strong white smoke from the hood, and shut off the car and opened the hood to release the smoke. If I had waited longer, there would have been a fire. The car is available upon inspection and is currently at my local dealer as of 8/11/2026 (Thunder Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram, Bartow, Florida) for repairs. An engine failure was confirmed by discoveries by the dealer of a broken valve spring, a dropped cylinder, a cracked piston head, and an oil-coolant mixture. The dealer confirmed that this stemmed from Stellantis's faulty "Multi-Displacement System" (MDS) cylinder-deactivation system and "eTorque" mild-hybrid system. Both systems work together to save fuel at cruising speeds and stoplights. However, due to the constant cycling of both systems, they contribute to the excessive engine stress and oil pressure fluctuation, which are known for the "WS" Jeep Wagoneer, the "DT" RAM 1500, and the "WL" Grand Cherokee equipped with the 5.7L HEMI eTorque V8. The dealer relayed the issues to Stellantis North America, showing videos and photos of this catastrophic mechanical failure.

I own a 2022 Jeep Wagoneer with the 5.7L HEMI eTorque system. The vehicle has lost all power while being driven on two separate occasions. The first occurred on October 22, 2025, on a major interstate. The second occurred on January 30, 2026, on a state highway. In both cases the engine shut off without warning while the vehicle was in motion, with my wife and four children aboard. Power steering and braking assist were lost. The vehicle locked into Park, and I could not get power to shift into neutral or restart it. The January 30 incident required towing. The vehicle was inspected by a mechanic, who was unable to replicate the problem. Since the second failure, I have observed that system voltage drops rapidly during normal driving on nearly every trip. To avoid another shutdown in traffic, I now monitor voltage and pull over to shut the engine off and restart it once it reaches 12.4V. This takes several efforts each trip to pull over and restart the system. It has produced anxiety in my family about the safety of this vehicle. This is a full-size SUV losing power in highway traffic without warning. It endangers my family and every driver around us. I am aware of ODI Preliminary Evaluation PE24018 covering this vehicle and system, and I am submitting this so my incidents are part of that record.

While driving my 2022 Jeep Wagoneer at 40-45 mph on a live public road with my four small children in the vehicle, the vehicle suffered a sudden, catastrophic electronic and powertrain shutdown without warning. The engine completely died, and the vehicle immediately and forcefully engaged the electronic emergency parking brake, bringing the vehicle to an abrupt, unexpected halt in the middle of moving traffic.Once stopped, the vehicle completely refused to crank or restart. The electronic shifter and braking system effectively locked the vehicle in place, leaving me and my four young children dangerously stranded inside a dead vehicle in the middle of a live lane, creating an immediate, life-threatening collision hazard from oncoming traffic. The vehicle had to be physically towed away from the scene to a dealership, where it currently sits awaiting diagnosis.This vehicle has a documented history of prior electronic and dashboard glitches that the manufacturer has failed to permanently resolve under warranty. The sudden loss of propulsion combined with autonomous, unwanted emergency brake activation while in motion represents a severe, un-remedied safety defect that put the lives of my entire family at immediate risk.

While driving my car engine just shuts off without any warning. My car had a message on the dash after the engine stopped saying to shift the car to park and the emergency parking brake came on. I had to switch my four ways on in the middle of the road. If this happened on a busier street my vehicle would have been hit because I could not drive my car to the side of the road. It was just a dead stop without any notice there was a problem. No dash lights before the engine stopped or anything. Just messages stating to put the car in park after the problem. I have two little girls who are regularly in my vehicle with me and it is scary to think that my Wagoneer engine can just decide to shut off at anytime with no warning.

The vehicle experienced a charging system failure while driving. The battery warning light illuminated and battery voltage dropped to approximately 11.7 volts while the engine was running. The vehicle continued to discharge the battery while being driven, creating a risk of loss of electrical power and possible vehicle shutdown. Diagnostic trouble codes included P0562 (System Voltage Low), P0BDE (Drive Motor Inverter Temperature Sensor E Circuit High), and P0AEE (Drive Motor Inverter Temperature Sensor A Circuit Range/Performance). The charging system was inspected by an independent repair facility. The serpentine belt was verified to be functioning properly and related fuses were checked. The repair facility diagnosed a failure of the 48-volt eTorque Belt Starter Generator (Motor Generator Unit/MGU). The replacement part is reportedly on backorder. The condition is repeatable and occurs during normal driving. The battery warning lamp and low voltage condition were observed and documented. This failure creates a potential safety concern because the vehicle can lose charging capability while operating on public roads.

Chrysler (FCA US, LLC) is recalling certain 2022-2025 Jeep Wagoneer, 2022-2026 Jeep Grand Wagoneer, 2023-2025 Jeep Wagoneer L, and 2023-2026 Jeep Grand Wagoneer L vehicles. The pivot bolts for the roof rack crossbars may not have been tightened properly, allowing them to detach.

Consequence & remedy

Consequence: Detached roof rack crossbars can create a road hazard, increasing the risk of a crash.

Remedy: Dealers will replace the roof rack crossbar pivot bolts, free of charge. Interim notification letters, notifying owners of the safety risk, are expected to be mailed October 8, 2026. Consequence & remedy

Consequence: A rearview camera image that does not display decreases the driver's visibility, increasing the risk of a crash.

As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard numbers 208, "Occupant Crash Protection" and 209, "Seat Belt Assemblies."

Consequence & remedy

Consequence: An unfastened seat belt may increase the risk of injury to occupants during a crash.

Consequence & remedy

Consequence: A rearview image that does not display while in reverse decreases the driver's visibility of the rear view, increasing the risk of injury or crash.

The upper B-pillar interior trim may not be fully seated and could interfere with the side curtain air bag (SABIC) deployment. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 226, "Ejection Mitigation."

Consequence & remedy

Consequence: A compromised deployment of the SABIC can reduce occupant protection in the event of a crash, increasing the risk of injury.

Consequence & remedy

Consequence: A rearview camera that does not display an image reduces the driver's rear view, increasing the risk of a crash.

The second-row center-seat recliner pull strap may bind on the seat trim surface, preventing the seat back from locking into the upright position. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 207, "Seating Systems."

Consequence & remedy

Consequence: A seat back that is not locked into position can increase the risk of injury in a crash.

The Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) has received 80 consumer complaints alleging an engine stall and loss of motive power on model year (MY) 2022 RAM 1500 pickup trucks and 2022 Jeep Wagoneer SUV vehicles. The particular engines in the subject vehicles are equipped with the Fiat Chrysler Automotive Group LLC (FCA) 5.7L Hemi eTorque system. The eTorque system is a mild hybrid system that lets the vehicle partially power itself. It accomplishes this by converting the captured energy from the braking system into electricity for the battery pack, which is then used to power a variety of electrical components. ETorque engines replace the alternator with a 48-volt battery-powered belt drive and a motor generator. The motor generator provides extra torque to the crankshaft during gear changes. Simultaneously, the motor generator uses the 48-volt battery pack to increase torque. Many of the complaints state that the vehicle's engine would shut off, often while travelling at slow speed, the vehicle would shift into park and apply the emergency brake. The vehicles were sometimes able to be restarted. In addition, complaints state that the malfunction warning light with the battery fault symbol appeared on the dash.  Many complaints state that a low voltage condition fault is present, sometimes not being able to restart the vehicle. On April 13, 2023, FCA announced recall 23V-265 describing a defect in certain 2021 Ram 1500 vehicles equipped with 5.7L eTorque engines.  The recall described a defect in the powertrain control module software can cause an incorrect fuel mixture condition in the engine, and result in an engine stall. In February of 2024, ODI provided the complaints on the 2022 Ram 1500 and Wagoneer vehicles to FCA. After reviewing the complaints, FCA stated that “the loss of motive power was likely not caused by an over rich fuel condition (as outlined in recall 23V-265), but rather some other cause (e.g., an electrical concern that causes the engine to shut down).” A Preliminary Evaluation has been opened to assess the scope, frequency, root cause(s) and consequences of these loss/stall of motive power incidents.  Additionally, ODI may expand the scope of the subject population during the investigation, if needed.
