I OWN A NEW 2007 JEEP GRAND CHEROKEE THAT I HAD FOR TWO WEEKS WITH APPROXIMATELY 500 MILES ON IT. A COUPLE OF DAYS AFTER PURCHASE I CALLED THE DEALER TO TELL THEM THAT THE ENGINE SERVICE LIGHT WAS ON. THE FUEL GAUGE DROPPED TO EMPTY FROM 3/4 FULL, AND THERE WAS NO ACCELERATION ON THE VEHICLE. FORTUNATELY I WAS ABLE TO COAST TO THE FAR SHOULDER OF THE ROAD. I TOOK THE KEY OUT AND RESTARTED THE ENGINE, AND THE FULL GUAGE WENT BACK UP TO 3/4 FULL AND I WAS ABLE TO RESUME DRIVING. I BROUGHT IT TO THE DEALER AND THEY WERE UNABLE TO REPLICATE THE PROBLEM....THEY SAID THE VEHICLE IS FINE. THE RESET THE COMPUTER SO THE ENGINE LIGHT WENT OFF. THE NEXT DAY AFTER BRINGING IT HOME FROM THE DEALER, THE ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON AGAIN AND I AM BRINGING IT BACK IN NEXT WEEK. I HAVE ALREADY CONTACTED A LEMON LAW ATTORNEY AS I FULLY EXPECT THE PROBLEM TO HAPPEN AGAIN. POSITION OF IGNITION IS DANGEROUS: I HAVE TURNED THE VEHICLE OFF WHEN DRIVING BY BUMPING IT WITH MY KNEE. THIS HAS HAPPENED 3 TIMES IN THE FIRST 400 MILES OF OWNING THIS VEHICLE. NM
This defect can affect the safe operation of the airbag system. Until this recall is performed, drivers should adjust their seat to allow clearance between the driver's knee and the ignition key, and remove all items from their key ring, leaving only the vehicle key. Chrysler Group LLC (Chrysler) is recalling certain model year 2005-2007 Jeep Grand Cherokee vehicles manufactured February 11, 2004, to July 5, 2007, and 2006-2007 Jeep Commander vehicles manufactured January 31, 2005, to July 5, 2007. In the affected vehicles, the driver may accidentally hit the ignition key with their knee, unintentionally knocking the key out of the run position, turning off the engine.
Consequence & remedy
Consequence: If the ignition key inadvertently moves into the OFF or ACCESSORY position, the engine will turn off, which will then depower various key safety systems including but not limited to air bags, power steering, and power braking. Loss of functionality of these systems may increase the risk of crash and/or increase the risk of injury in the event of a crash.
Remedy: Chrysler will notify owners, and dealers will replace the ignition switch, free of charge. Chrysler sent interim notifications to owners in September 2014. The recall began on October 9, 2015. Owners may contact Chrysler customer service at 1-800-853-1403. Chrysler's number for this recall is P41.

On November 18, 2010, NHTSA's Recall Management Division (RMD) opened an audit query (AQ10-001) to investigate recall remedy completion by rental car companies on safety recall campaigns.It was expected to provide the agency an indication of how completely and how quickly rental car fleets perform necessary recall-related remedies on the vehicles owned and then rented/leased for use on the roadways.RMD queried three (3) major motor vehicle manufacturers (Ford, Chrysler, and General Motors) and requested data regarding completion figures for fifteen (15) discreet safety recalls.Analysis of this data demonstrated that rental car recalls completion was neither complete nor consistent.The rental car companies representing the largest market share in the industry were then queried as to their respective policies for the rental, lease, and sale of vehicles with open recalls.The data and responses from the manufacturers and the rental car companies can be found in the document repository by accessing the ?Associated Documents link above.In December 2015, Congress enacted the Fixing America's Surface Transportation (FAST) Act.One section of the Act prohibits rental car companies from renting, leasing, or selling motor vehicles subject to open safety recalls.With the passage of the FAST Act and its prohibition, there is no continuing need for the agency to investigate rental car recall completions.Accordingly, this investigation is closed.The agency reserves the right to open any future investigations, including audits of individual recalls, or groups of recalls, or rental car companies, to examine more closely safety recalls performance and completion issues in this area.
