THANKFULLY MY CHILDREN WERE NOT IN THE CAR ON EITHER ONE OF THESE OCCASIONS. AFTER RESEARCHING I FOUND THAT JEEP TIPM'S WERE RECALLED FROM 2011 TO 2015. IT ALSO APPEARS THAT TIPM'S FROM 2007 LEADING UP TO 2011 WERE ALSO HAVING A LOT OF ISSUES AND A RECALL WAS IN ORDER THEN, BUT NEVER OFFICIALLY CAME TO BE. THIS PART HAS A LONG AND DOCUMENTED HISTORY AS HAVING MAJOR PROBLEMS AND I WANT TO OFFICIALLY REQUEST AN INVESTIGATION AS TO WHY THESE PARTS HAVE ARE BEING PUT INTO CARS IN THIS CONDITION. THE RAMIFICATIONS OF THIS PARTS FAILURE ARE HUGE. TO HAVE A CAR THAT IS IN MOTION LOCK UP AND BECOME TOTALLY UNRESPONSIVE PRESENTS A HUGE SAFETY CONCERN TO THE DRIVER, THEIR PASSENGERS AND THE OTHER VEHICLES ON THE ROAD AROUND THEM. SOMETIMES HOURS, SOMETIMES DAYS. WHEN TAKEN TO THE DEALERSHIP THEY CAN NEVER DIAGNOSE THE ISSUE BECAUSE THEY ARE UNABLE TO DUPLICATE THE ISSUE. FOR WHATEVER REASON, POSSIBLY JUST A COINCIDENCE, REPLACING THE BATTERY IN THE KEY FOB SEEMS TO DELAY THE ISSUE FROM HAPPENING AGAIN FOR A FEW MONTHS. ALTHOUGH THIS MAY NOT SEEM LIKE A STRAIGHT FORWARD SAFETY ISSUE, THE PROBLEM HAS LEFT ME STRANDED AT A GAS STATION IN THE MIDDLE OF WINTER WHILE BEING 8-1/2 MONTHS PREGNANT AND MOST RECENTLY LEFT ME STRANDED WITH MY 8 MONTH OLD BABY. This defect can affect the safe operation of the airbag system. Until this recall is performed, drivers should adjust their seat to allow clearance between the driver's knee and the ignition key, and remove all items from their key ring, leaving only the vehicle key. Chrysler Group LLC (Chrysler) is recalling certain model year 2005-2007 Jeep Grand Cherokee vehicles manufactured February 11, 2004, to July 5, 2007, and 2006-2007 Jeep Commander vehicles manufactured January 31, 2005, to July 5, 2007. In the affected vehicles, the driver may accidentally hit the ignition key with their knee, unintentionally knocking the key out of the run position, turning off the engine.
Consequence & remedy
Consequence: If the ignition key inadvertently moves into the OFF or ACCESSORY position, the engine will turn off, which will then depower various key safety systems including but not limited to air bags, power steering, and power braking. Loss of functionality of these systems may increase the risk of crash and/or increase the risk of injury in the event of a crash.
Remedy: Chrysler will notify owners, and dealers will replace the ignition switch, free of charge. Chrysler sent interim notifications to owners in September 2014. The recall began on October 9, 2015. Owners may contact Chrysler customer service at 1-800-853-1403. Chrysler's number for this recall is P41.

On November 18, 2010, NHTSA's Recall Management Division (RMD) opened an audit query (AQ10-001) to investigate recall remedy completion by rental car companies on safety recall campaigns.It was expected to provide the agency an indication of how completely and how quickly rental car fleets perform necessary recall-related remedies on the vehicles owned and then rented/leased for use on the roadways.RMD queried three (3) major motor vehicle manufacturers (Ford, Chrysler, and General Motors) and requested data regarding completion figures for fifteen (15) discreet safety recalls.Analysis of this data demonstrated that rental car recalls completion was neither complete nor consistent.The rental car companies representing the largest market share in the industry were then queried as to their respective policies for the rental, lease, and sale of vehicles with open recalls.The data and responses from the manufacturers and the rental car companies can be found in the document repository by accessing the ?Associated Documents link above.In December 2015, Congress enacted the Fixing America's Surface Transportation (FAST) Act.One section of the Act prohibits rental car companies from renting, leasing, or selling motor vehicles subject to open safety recalls.With the passage of the FAST Act and its prohibition, there is no continuing need for the agency to investigate rental car recall completions.Accordingly, this investigation is closed.The agency reserves the right to open any future investigations, including audits of individual recalls, or groups of recalls, or rental car companies, to examine more closely safety recalls performance and completion issues in this area.
