09/29/2008 JEEP TAKEN TO GARAGE FOR HEAD LIGHT FAILURE NOTHING FOUND. 03/09/2012 TO 11/07/2012 ALL INDICATOR LIGHT FLASH EXTERIOR LIGHTS FLASH. BEEN TO THE DEALERSHIP THREE TIMES FOR NUMEROUS DAYS AT A TIME THEY CAN NOT FIND ANYTHING WRONG STILL HAVING THIS PROBLEM. REALLY NOT GOOD WHEN IT IS DARK OUT AND YOU DON'T HAVE HEADLIGHTS. AT 15,000 AND 35,000 I HAD TO HAVE THE SHIFT MODULAR REPLACED BECAUSE ALL THE CAR WOULD BASICALLY GO IN TO NEUTRAL WHEN BEING DRIVEN. I WOULD HAVE TO PULL OVER AND TURN THE CAR OFF AND RESTART IT. THE FIRST TIME IT WAS AT THE DEALERSHIP FOR THREE DAYS THEY COULD NOT FIND A PROBLEM AND SENT IT HOME ONLY TO HAVE TO RETURN 2 DAYS LATER WITH THE SAME PROBLEM. AS I HAVE FOUND MANY PEOPLE ON LINE WITH THESE SAME ISSUES MAKES YOU WONDER FIRST WHY THESE ISSUES CAN'T SEEM TO BE FIXED, SECOND WHY THERE HAS NOT BEEN A RECALL. IT IS TRULY A MIRACLE THAT NO ONE I HAVE HEARD OF HAS BEEN INJURED OR KILLED BECAUSE OF THESE DEFECTS. WHEN THE JEEP IS WORKING I LOVE IT. IF I HAD A HOPE AND A PRAY OF GETTING A NEW VEHICLE I WOULD TRADE IN MY PAID OFF JEEP IN A HEART BEAT SO THAT I WOULDN'T HAVE TO CONSTANTLY WORRY THAT IT STOP RUNNING OR THAT I WILL BE DRIVING BLIND IN THE DARK. SADLY I DIDN'T EVEN TOUCH ON THE OTHER ELECTRICAL ISSUES I.E. WINDOW THAT HAD TO BE FIXED REMOTE KEYLESS ISSUES IT IS SAD THAT THE COMPANY DOESN'T DO ANYTHING ABOUT THESE THINGS THIS WILL BE MY LAST JEEP. I FEEL THAT THESE PROBLEMS ARE DANGEROUS FOR ME, MY FAMILY AND ANYONE THAT IS ON THE ROAD WITH ME AND OTHER JEEP OWNER WITH THE SAME ISSUES.

2007 JEEP GRAND CHEROKEE LAREDO - RANDOMLY THE VEHICLE WILL NOT START, WHEN TURNING THE KEY TO IN THE IGNITION YOU CAN HEAR THE RELAY CLICKING, ENGINE DOES NOT CRANK OR START. WHEN THE KEY IS RETURNED TO THE OFF POSITION THE DATA DISPLAY BELOW THE TACHOMETER MOMENTARILY STATES THAT THE TRANSMISSION IS OVERHEATED. THE BATTERY IS FULLY CHARGED AND EVERYTHING ELSE, LIGHTS, HORN, ETC STILL WORK. THERE ARE NO ERROR CODES DUMPED. THE FIRST ATTEMPT TO FIX THIS BY THE DEALERSHIP WAS TO REPLACE THE STARTER, NOW 4 MONTHS LATER THE VEHICLE IS DOING THE SAME EXACT THING. THIS HAS BECOME A RELIABILITY ISSUE IN THAT THERE IS NO TELLING WHEN THIS WILL OCCUR, EACH TIME FAMILY MEMBERS HAVE BEEN STRANDED WITH THIS VEHICLE, JEEP DEALERSHIP SEEMS TO BE "STUMPED". I HAVE READ OF MANY JEEP VEHICLES THAT DEMONSTRATE THIS VERY SAME PROBLEM, WITHOUT RESOLUTION. THIS CAN BE AN INTERMITTENT ISSUE, USUALLY HAVE TO WAIT UNTIL IT BECOMES A "HARD" FAIL BEFORE THE DEALERSHIP WILL LOOK AT IT. THIS IS EXTREMELY FRUSTRATING OWNING THIS VEHICLE NOT KNOWING WHEN IT WILL OR WILL NOT START AND WHETHER THE DEALERSHIP CAN OR CANNOT FIX IT! *TR

NO ERROR CODES PRESENT IN DTC REPORT OR FROM A DIAGNOSTIC THAT COST $90.00 SOMETHING NEEDS TO BE DONE ABOUT THIS BEFORE AN ACCIDENT RESULTS IN A FATALITY. THERE SEEMS TO ME MANY INSTANCES LIKE THIS ON THESE BOARDS. THIS IS THE FIRST INVESTMENT OF A 'REAL' VEHICLE THAT I'VE HAD. TO PAY MONEY FOR SOMETHING DEPENDABLE IS THE GOAL. CURRENTLY THIS VEHICLE IS NOT DEPENDABLE, LET ALONE SAFE. *TR

LUCKILY SHE WAS ABLE TO PULL TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD QUICKLY WITHOUT AN ISSUE AND TURNED THE CAR OFF, WAITED A MINUTE AND STARTED THE JEEP UP AGAIN AND WAS THEN ABLE TO ACCELERATE. WHEN TALKING TO THE DEALER, THEY HAVE NEVER HEARD OF THIS PROBLEM BEFORE. WHEN JEEP WAS CHECKED AT A LOCAL DEALER, THEY PULLED ERROR CODES THAT POINTED TO THE TRANSMISSION SPEED SENSOR. ONLY ABOUT $700 TO REPLACE THAT WITH LABOR!! THE SENSORS ARE ALL PART OF THE CIRCUIT BOARD AND THUS NEED TO DISMANTLE THE TRANSMISSION TO REPLACE THE SENSORS. THEN I GET ON THIS SITE AND SEE ALL THE COMPLAINTS WITH THE SAME ISSUE. THIS WEEKEND I'M GOING CAR SEARCHING TO GET RID OF THIS THING. *TR

I WRITE THIS ONLY BECAUSE I JUST EXPERIENCE MY FOURTH MECHANICAL BREAKDOWN IN THREE YEARS. IN DECEMBER 2009, I EXPERIENCED THE FIRST BREAKDOWN IN WHAT HAS BECOME A STRING OF MALFUNCTIONS. THE TRANSMISSION ON MY 2007 GRAND CHEROKEE LAREDO GAVE OUT AT ABOUT 40,000 MILES. WHEN TRYING TO START THE VEHICLE, I GOT A 'TRANSMISSION OVERHEAT' MESSAGE ON THE DASH DISPLAY ALONG WITH THE ENGINE MALFUNCTION INDICATOR. I TOOK IT TO THE DEALERSHIP WHERE I PURCHASED IT AND IT TOOK NEARLY A MONTH FOR THE REPAIR SHOP TO LOCATE, RECEIVE AND INSTALL THE NECESSARY PARTS. APPARENTLY SUPPLY AND DEMAND HAD SOMETHING TO DO WITH IT, INDICATING TO ME THAT THIS WAS AN ISSUE NATIONWIDE. A MONTH LATER, ANOTHER MALFUNCTION, THIS TIME, THE ELECTRONIC SHIFT MODULE (ESM) HAD DIED. JUST OVER A YEAR LATER, THE SAME COMPONENT (ESM) DIED AGAIN (OF COURSE JUST OUT OF WARRANTY), THIS TIME WHILE I WAS DRIVING ALONG RT. 50 OUTSIDE OF DC. NOW, LESS THAN SIX MONTHS LATER, WITH LESS THAN 40,000 ON THE ALREADY REPLACED TRANSMISSION, MY TRANSMISSION HAS BLOWN AGAIN - SAME 'TRANSMISSION OVERHEAT' MESSAGE, SAME ENGINE MALFUNCTION LIGHT, SAME UNDRIVABILITY. CLEARLY FROM SEEING THE COMMENTS ON THIS FORUM AS WELL AS OTHER REPUTABLE SITES SUCH AS EDMUNDS AND CONSUMER REPORTS, THE 2007 GRAND CHEROKEE LAREDO HAS A LONG, LONG HISTORY OF MECHANICAL AND ELECTRONIC PROBLEMS. I HAVE A PHONE CALL SCHEDULED WITH A CASE WORKER SCHEDULED FOR TOMORROW, 7/13/2012. THEY'LL EITHER MAKE IT RIGHT OR I'LL BE TAKING MY STORY TO SMALL CLAIMS COURT. I ENCOURAGE EVERYONE WHO'S HAD ISSUES WITH THIS MODEL TO DO THE SAME.

WAITED A MINUTE AND PUT IT BACK IN DRIVE AND THE ACCELERATOR MAGICALLY WORKED AGAIN. THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT REMAINED ON, DROVE TO AN AUTO PARTS STORE TO HAVE THE CODE CHECKED. Official recalls
5Jul 21, 2014
This defect can affect the safe operation of the airbag system. Until this recall is performed, drivers should adjust their seat to allow clearance between the driver's knee and the ignition key, and remove all items from their key ring, leaving only the vehicle key. Chrysler Group LLC (Chrysler) is recalling certain model year 2005-2007 Jeep Grand Cherokee vehicles manufactured February 11, 2004, to July 5, 2007, and 2006-2007 Jeep Commander vehicles manufactured January 31, 2005, to July 5, 2007. In the affected vehicles, the driver may accidentally hit the ignition key with their knee, unintentionally knocking the key out of the run position, turning off the engine.
Consequence & remedy
Consequence: If the ignition key inadvertently moves into the OFF or ACCESSORY position, the engine will turn off, which will then depower various key safety systems including but not limited to air bags, power steering, and power braking. Loss of functionality of these systems may increase the risk of crash and/or increase the risk of injury in the event of a crash.
Remedy: Chrysler will notify owners, and dealers will replace the ignition switch, free of charge. Chrysler sent interim notifications to owners in September 2014. The recall began on October 9, 2015. Owners may contact Chrysler customer service at 1-800-853-1403. Chrysler's number for this recall is P41.

Chrysler Group LLC (Chrysler) is recalling certain model year 2005-2010 Jeep Grand Cherokee vehicles manufactured February 11, 2004, through March 9, 2010; and 2006-2010 Jeep Commander vehicles manufactured January 31, 2005, through March 10, 2010. A transfer case electrical failure may result in an unintentional shifting of the transfer case into the neutral position.
Consequence & remedy
Consequence: If the vehicle shifts into neutral, it may roll away increasing the risk of a crash or personal injury.
Remedy: Chrysler will notify owners, and dealers will reflash the final drive controller which governs the transfer case, with new software, free of charge. The recall began on August 15, 2013. Owners may contact Chrysler at 1-800-247-9753. Chrysler's recall campaign number is N23.

AQ10001 · Fleet Vehicle Recall Completion Audit
Opened Nov 18, 2010 · Closed Dec 28, 2015
Status: closed (inferred from source dates) · Unknown Or Other
On November 18, 2010, NHTSA's Recall Management Division (RMD) opened an audit query (AQ10-001) to investigate recall remedy completion by rental car companies on safety recall campaigns. It was expected to provide the agency an indication of how completely and how quickly rental car fleets perform necessary recall-related remedies on the vehicles owned and then rented/leased for use on the roadways.RMD queried three (3) major motor vehicle manufacturers (Ford, Chrysler, and General Motors) and requested data regarding completion figures for fifteen (15) discreet safety recalls.Analysis of this data demonstrated that rental car recalls completion was neither complete nor consistent. The rental car companies representing the largest market share in the industry were then queried as to their respective policies for the rental, lease, and sale of vehicles with open recalls. The data and responses from the manufacturers and the rental car companies can be found in the document repository by accessing the ?Associated Documents link above. In December 2015, Congress enacted the Fixing America's Surface Transportation (FAST) Act.One section of the Act prohibits rental car companies from renting, leasing, or selling motor vehicles subject to open safety recalls. With the passage of the FAST Act and its prohibition, there is no continuing need for the agency to investigate rental car recall completions.Accordingly, this investigation is closed. The agency reserves the right to open any future investigations, including audits of individual recalls, or groups of recalls, or rental car companies, to examine more closely safety recalls performance and completion issues in this area.
