The contact owns a 1998 Jeep Cherokee equipped with Goodyear Tires, Tire Line: Wrangler Radial A/S, Tire Size: 275/75/R15, DOT Number: 1PJHLFNWR. The contact stated that he had purchased two tires from Walmart that were installed in the rear of the vehicle. The contact stated while driving from a complete stop, the vehicle started wobbling. The contact stated that the failure occurred increasingly as he continued driving, causing him to pull to the side of the road. The vehicle was taken to Walmart, where it was inspected, and the contact was informed that the rear tires were out of round and the tread had separated. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and informed the contact that he needed to drive to the nearest Goodyear dealer for the tire replacements; however, the nearest Goodyear was 100 miles away. The tires were not replaced. The contact was awaiting a call back from the manufacturer. The tire failure mileage was approximately 200. The vehicle failure mileage was approximately 200,000.

DRIVING A VEHICLE WITH 4 MATCHING TIRES BOUGHT IN 10/07, ONLY 6,000 MILES ON THEM. PULLED OFF THE EXIT, WHICH WAS RIGHT THERE THANK GOD, LOOKED AT CAR, TIRE HAD A 4-6" GAPING RAGGED HOLE IN SIDEWALL. REAR TIRE, DRIVERS SIDE. HE COULD HAVE BEEN INJURED FATALLY. TIRE WAS OBVIOUSLY DEFECTIVE JEEP WAS TOWED TO PLACE OF ORIGINAL PURCHASE. WALMART IN WATERFORD CT. THEY TESTED THE THREAD ON THE OTHER 3 TIRES AND TOLD MY SON THEY'D REPLACE THE BLOWN TIRE AS THE THREAD ON THE OTHERS WAS FINE. I TOLD M SON WE WILL NOT ACCEPT THAT AS: 1. THEY'D ALL COME FROM THE SAME DEFECTIVE BATCH, AND 2, DID NOT WANT MISMATCHING TREAD ON TIRES. MIND YOU, THEY FELT THE SIZE OF THE TIRE WAS GOOD FOR CAR AT PURCHASE, AND THEN ALSO TODAY, THE DAY ONE TIRE BLEW A GAPING HOLE IN SIDEWALL. SON INSISTED, I ALSO TOLD HIM TO SPEAK TO ASST. MANAGER PAT, WHO TOLD ME SHE'D LOOK INTO RECALLS FROM THAT BATCH. THEY THEN AGREED THEY'D REPLACE ALL FOUR. BUT, THEY SAID,(THESE WERE THE SAME TECH'S WHO SOLD THE TIRES AND INSTALLED THEM ON THE JEEP,) THAT THE TIRES WERE TOO WIDE AND RUBBING ON THE BUMPER, THAT'S WHY IT BLEW. REAR TIRES DON'T TURN SO CAN'T RUB. AS I SAID BEFORE THEY WANTED TO PUT 3 MATCHING (NOW INCORRECT SIZE) JUST MINUTES EARLIER. SO. I CAME, TOOK PICTURES OF THE TIRE. 2 CAMERAS TO BE SAFE. IF YOU WANT THEM TO SAVE THE TIRE. IT WAS 3:30 PM WHEN WE LEFT THERE SO THEY MAY STILL HAVE IT. THE DOT # ON THE NEW TIRES IS HHC62U. MAY BE SAME AS OLD ONES.?????? WHEN WE BOUGHT AND HAD THE TIRES INSTALLED AT WALMART THEY CERTAINLY DIDN'T OBJECT TO GOING FROM A 225 TO A 235 AS THEY SAID THE WHEEL COULD HANDLE THAT SIZE. NOW THEY'RE PLACING THE BLAME ON ME FOR BUYING THAT SIZE. THEY SAID IT WAS FINE. I'D LIKE TO ADD I'M AFRAID OF THESE TIRES COMPLETELY. IF I HAD A CHOICE I'D HAVE CHOSEN A DIFFERENT BRAND TO BE SAFE. THEY SHOULD PAY FOR AN ALIGNMENT ALSO. THANKS. *TR

I PURCHASED SOME FIRESTONE TIRES WILDERNESS ATIII SIZE 30X9.50R15LT FOR MY 1998 JEEP CHEROKEE ON 9/8/99. SINCE THE DAY THEY WERE PURCHASED, I'VE EXPERIENCED PROBLEMS WITH THE TIRES. MY TRUCK DROVE DIFFERENTLY. MY TIRES GAVE A KNOCKING SOUND AND THE BEST WAY I KNOW TO DESCRIBE THE PROBLEM, IT SEEMED AS THOUGH THEY WERE ABOUT TO COME ALOOSE FROM MY VECHICLE. I WENT TO MY LOCAL FIRESTONE DEALER AND THEY ASSURED ME THE TIRES WERE "OK" EACH TIME I WENT. I VISITED A FIRESTONE DEALER ON 8/7/00 AND HE STATED AS A CUSTOMER SATISFACTION GESTURE, HE WOULD ALLOW ME TO TRADE MY TIRES IN AND GET SOME REPLACEMENT TIRES. THE TIRES WERE TO BE IN ON THURSDAY 8/10/00 AND THEY WOULD BE MOUNTED ON MY VECHICLE AT THAT TIME. FIRESTONE DID A RECALL ON 8/9/00 AND WHEN I CONTACTED THE DEALER, HE STATED HE COULD NOT REPLACE MY TIRES BECAUSE THEY ONLY HAD INSTRUCTIONS TO REPLACE A CERTAIN TIRE AND MY TIRE WAS NOT ON THE LIST. I URGED HIM TO REPLACE THEM AS WE HAD AGREED AND ALLOW ME TO PAY THE DIFFERENCE BUT HE REFUSED (THIS WAS THE ORIGINAL PLAN ANYWAY). HE THEN PROCEEDED TO HANG UP. I TOOK MY VECHICLE IN ON 8/7 AND 8/8 SO THEY COULD TEST DRIVE THE VECHICLE TO SEE HOW THE TIRES PERFORMED. EACH TIME THEY ASSURED ME THE TIRES WERE "OK". TO DATE, I HAVE NOT HAD ANY ACCIDENTS FROM THESE TIRES. HOWEVER, I URGE YOUR OFFICE TO INVESTIGATE THE IDEA OF FIRESTONE EXPANDING THIS RECALL. I PLAN TO PURCHASE SOME MORE TIRES BECAUSE I TIRED OF FIGHTING WITH THIS COMPANY ABOUT MY COMPLAINTS. I HAVEN'T BEEN SATISFIED WITH THESE TIRES SINCE THEY WERE PURCHASED. I SENT AN E-MAIL TO FIRESTONE ON 8/8 AND ON 8/7 I CONTACTED THE CONSUMER AFFAIRS DEPT AND THE RECEPTIONIST DID A 3-WAY CONFERENCE CALL WITH THE MANAGER OF MY LOCAL FIRESTONE COMPANY ON RODNEY PARHAM RD. IN LITTLE ROCK. HIS NAME WAS DAVE (?) AND HE TOLD ME TO BRING MY TRUCK IN AND HE WOULD DO A REPLACEMENT. AFTER THE RECALL WAS ANNOUNCED, HE CHANGE HIS MIND. I HAVE NOT HEARD ANYTHING FROM THE COMPANY, NOR DO I EXPECT TO. I DO WANT THIS COMPLIANT LOGGED.*

ODI has completed an extensive analysis of rear crash fuel tank system integrity data for the subject Jeep Cherokee, Grand Cherokee and Liberty vehicles (SVs).As of June 2013, ODI knew of 56 post-collision fatal fires, 28 non-fatal fires, and 6 fuel leak incidents (totaling 90 incidents, 75 fatalities and 58 injuries) involving the SVs.Based on this analysis, ODI issued a Recall Request Letter (RRL) on June 3, 2013 requesting that Chrysler recall the Grand Cherokee and Liberty vehicles due to the rate of fatal, non-fatal fire, and fuel leak incidents when compared to peer vehicles (compact and medium SUVs) built during the same time period. In the RRL, ODI described how the location of the aft-mounted fuel tank made the SVs vulnerable to rear impact crash fuel tank failures.During the analysis, besides the high speed/high severity crashes present in both the SV and peer vehicles, ODI observed a significant number of low and moderate speed rear impact crash related fires and leaks, particularly in the Liberty. The data also demonstrated that SVs originally equipped with towing hitch receivers (trailer hitches) appeared to be under-represented in rear-impact related fuel tank failures. In the RRL, ODI requested that Chrysler provide its response by June 18, 2013, otherwise NHTSA might proceed to an Initial Decision that the SVs contain a safety-related defect.Chrysler responded to the RRL on June 4, 2013 and vigorously disputed the tentative findings of the RRL.Among other things, Chrysler argued that the SVs had an overall safety record superior to their peers, met or exceeded all applicable federal motor vehicle safety standards (FMVSS) and only experienced fires in severe high energy rear impacts.Nonetheless, while continuing to maintain that the SVs did not contain a safety-related defect, Chrysler proposed a recall (13V-252) of approximately 2.5M (1.6M currently registered) model year (MY) 1993 - 1998 Grand Cherokee (ZJ) and MY 2002-2007 Liberty (KJ) vehicles on June 18, 2013.The recall remedy submitted by Chrysler would employ a hitch receiver assembly consisting of a steel cross-member behind the fuel tank with forward-projecting arms bolted to the frame rails on either side of the fuel tank. For the MY 1999 - 2004 Grand Cherokee, Chrysler indicated it would conduct a customer satisfaction campaign and inspect vehicles equipped with aftermarket tow hitch receivers, and if necessary, replace any such hitch receivers whose conditionmay increase the risk of fuel system failure in rear crashes.Examination of the available data established that the MY 1999 - 2004 Grand Cherokee did not pose the same magnitude of safety risk as the MY 1993 - 1998 Grand Cherokee and MY 2002-2007 Liberty, particularly in low and moderate speed rear impacts.Because the agency has concluded that the vehicles do not present an unreasonable risk to safety, ODI is closing its investigation of the MY 1999 - 2004 Grand Cherokee.Although it was not within the scope of the Petition initiating this investigation or the Preliminary Evaluation preceding this EA, ODI also examined the performance of the MY 1993 - 2001 Cherokee as part of this investigation.NHTSA's assessment of the available data for the Cherokee did not establish an unreasonable risk in comparison to peer vehicles.ODI does not approve proposed defect remedies. While offering to install hitch receiver assemblies on the MY 1993-1998 Grand Cherokees and 2002-2007 Liberty, Chrysler did not, in ODI's view, provide enough evidence demonstrating the effectiveness of the proposed remedy in rear impacts. The Complete Summary for this Closing Resume (EA12-005) can be seen by
