My car failed to charge on my level 2 home charger and would only charge on a level 3 fast charger. Because of this, I was unable to charge my car at home. I was on a trip about 1 hour from my home in an area of Massachusetts that developed an electrical blackout. I almost ran out of power on a dark road with no streetlights. I was lucky to find a level 3 charger just on the outside of the blackout area when my car had less than 5% power. I brought the car to the Hyundai service center 2 weeks ago. I called daily for updates and was told they were "diagnosing" the problem. I called again, yesterday and was told it needed an ICCU. It had been ordered that afternoon (2/5/26) and they hoped it would arrived within the week. They were unable to provide a loaner car (even though I've been without a car for two weeks).

I am reporting a safety-related defect involving unintended vehicle movement on my Hyundai Ioniq 5 (Model Year 2023, SEL AWD). Observed behavior: With the vehicle in Drive and the Auto Hold function active (indicated by the white “AUTO HOLD” indicator in the instrument cluster), I brought the vehicle to a complete stop by pressing the brake pedal. Auto Hold engaged (text now green), the vehicle remained stationary, and I removed my foot from the brake. After approximately three minutes of remaining stopped, a driver-assistance system error message appeared on the instrument cluster. At that point, Auto Hold disengaged (the “AUTO HOLD” indicator disappeared), and the vehicle began to creep forward on its own. I did not command acceleration, did not press the accelerator pedal, and did not intentionally release the brake. The movement was unexpected and created a safety risk. The first occurrence happened in a school drop-off line with the vehicle stopped near other vehicles and pedestrians. I have since reproduced the behavior and captured it on video. Related observations: Similar driver-assistance system errors have occurred while the vehicle was in Park and in Drive, with or without Auto Hold active. In those cases, the vehicle did not move because it was either mechanically locked or I had my foot on the brake. In all cases, Auto Hold deactivated. Safety concern: This behavior raises concerns about the reliability of Auto Hold and its interaction with braking and driver-assistance systems, particularly after the vehicle has been stationary for an extended period. Unintended forward movement presents a significant safety hazard. I am reporting this issue for investigation of potential defects in software, sensors, or control logic. Video evidence is available.

My 2023 Hyundai Ioniq 5 lost all power and stopped in the middle of a busy road. I had no power even when I pressed the gas. Nothing in the car worked, including the hazard lights, which made it even more dangerous as cars were speeding past me. I was finally able to call the police to come help and they set up a safe area. However, I was put in an unsafe situation while I waited for assistance from the police. In addition, there was no way to put the car in neutral once the power was off (at least I couldn't find a button or a switch to do that), which made it difficult to get it towed. I understand the car died on me because of faulty ICCU on my car. Btw, the car had just finished its software update earlier that day. I am not sure if this somehow contributed to the ICCU failure.

Hyundai model Ioniq 5 (all years and trim styles) have a known issue with ICCUs (Integrated Charging Control Unit) that fail. This component controls charging of the 12 volt battery, and in turn electrical systems. Hyundai replaced my ICCU, but I am concerned it may fail again, as the underlying issue does not seem to be known or addressed. When the ICCU fails, the vehicle can suddenly lose the ability to move. This can be extremely dangerous if the car is in motion and unable to safely pull over. Luckily, my ICCU failed in the middle of a parking lot. Many Ioniq 5 owners report this issue, some multiple times on multiple ICCUs.

On 12/13 while driving back home at a red light at night, we heard a loud pop at the driver's rear side and suddenly the dash displayed a warning stating "Check electric vehicle system". The car then would not drive past 25 mph and kept flashing the warning. We got it home safe, and planned on dropping it off at the dealership the next day after jumping it. The next day however, after multiple attempts to jump the car's battery, it would not start enough to move it. The car would start and then flash a warning saying that the 12V battery voltage is low and then shut off again. It had to be towed on 12/15 to the dealership where they will be doing an diagnosis.

I am reporting a safety concern with my 2023 Hyundai Ioniq 5 related to Hyundai placing remote safety features behind a paid subscription. Hyundai has locked two functions that affect safety: (1) the ability to remotely check the vehicle’s battery state of charge, and (2) the ability to remotely unlock the doors from a phone. These functions previously existed under BlueLink but were removed unless the owner pays for the new Connected Services package. 1. Remote battery status Without paying the subscription, I cannot check the vehicle’s battery level while it is charging. If I need to leave the charging area or am charging from home and not directly watching the dashboard, there is no way to verify whether charging completed or stalled. Charging interruptions are common with EVs. This could leave me stranded unexpectedly in unsafe conditions, at night, or in severe weather. This is a safety issue, not a convenience issue. 2. Remote unlock Hyundai also removed the ability to unlock the car from my phone unless I pay for the subscription. This creates a safety hazard if a child accidentally locks themselves in the car with the key fob inside. Without remote unlock, the parent may have to break a window or wait for emergency responders, which creates risk of heat or cold exposure to a child. This problem is reproducible every time I attempt to use the app without a paid subscription. Hyundai has been contacted and has not offered a safety solution except paying the subscription fee. I am asking NHTSA to review whether locking basic safety functions behind a paywall creates a safety defect that could put vehicle occupants at risk.

I got it towed near an auto shop and bought a new battery, thinking it was just a dead 12V battery. The car turned on and seemed to resolved the issue, but after 20 minutes of driving, it completely turned off again on the road. Very dangerous. I dropped it off at Platinum Hyundai of Tracy dealership and am awaiting a diagnostic.

Hyundai Motor America (Hyundai) is recalling certain 2023-2024 Ioniq 5 vehicles. The high voltage battery cells may contain misaligned electrodes, which can lead to a fire while parked or driving.
Consequence & remedy
Consequence: A fire increases the risk of injury.
Remedy: Owners are advised to park outside and away from structures and limit their charge to a maximum of 80% until the recall repair is complete. Dealers will replace the high voltage battery system assembly, free of charge. Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed August 31, 2026. Owners may contact Hyundai's customer service at 855-371-9460. Hyundai's number for this recall is 305. Vehicle Identification Numbers (VINs) involved in this recall became searchable on NHTSA.gov on July 3, 2026.

Hyundai's numbers for this recall are 272 (Hyundai) and 025G (Genesis). This recall expands and replaces previous recall number 24V-204. Hyundai Motor America (Hyundai) is recalling certain 2023 IONIQ 5, IONIQ 6, and Genesis GV60 vehicles. The rear inner driveshaft may have been improperly heat-treated, allowing it to break under load and resulting in a loss of drive power.
Consequence & remedy
Consequence: A loss of drive power increases the risk of a crash.
Remedy: Dealers will replace the rear inner driveshaft, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed March 29, 2024. Owners may contact Hyundai customer service at 1-855-371-9460. Hyundai's numbers for this recall are 253(H), 017G(G).

On June 8, 2023, the Office of Defect Investigation (ODI) opened PE23011 to investigate allegations of loss of motor power on model year (MY) 2022 Hyundai Ioniq 5 vehicles. Some consumers reported loss of motor power immediately after a warning lamp illumination or reduction of motive power while the vehicle was in motion. This investigation found that the Integrated Charging Control Unit (ICCU) may be subject to various conditions such as overcurrent, overvoltage induced at the end of charging, and certain thermal loading during operation that can damage its internal components and open the ICCU fuse, resulting in an inability to charge the 12-volt battery. The vehicle could eventually lose all motive power, increasing the risk of a crash. In July 2023, Hyundai issued a service campaign to address certain MY 2022-2023 Ioniq 5 and MY 2023 Ioniq 6 vehicles that may have low 12V auxiliary battery charging occurrences due to an ICCU fault and may set the DTC P1A9096 “DC/DC Converter Input Voltage Sensor Fault”. On March 15, 2024, Hyundai filed Safety Recall 24V-204 for 98,878 MY 2022-2024 Hyundai Ioniq 5 vehicles and MY 2023-2024 Hyundai Ioniq 6, Genesis GV60, Genesis GV70 “Electrified” and Genesis G80 “Electrified” vehicles. The recall remedy provides an inspection, and if necessary, a replacement of the ICCU and the associated fuse. The ICCU software reduces the risk of overcurrent and implements voltage peak reduction at the end of EV battery charging. The recall also includes a software update that revises the electric water pump operational threshold to reduce thermal loading during charging and driving. In view of the recall action being taken by Hyundai, ODI is closing this Preliminary Evaluation. The agency reserves the right to take additional action if warranted by future circumstances.
