The truck has had ~6 occurrences since purchased where the engine briefly loses power in highway cruising speeds between ~50 and 75mph At first we thought it was a safety feature or governor on the truck – or a malfunctioning of the Auto-idle. I mentioned the incidents to the dealer service techs where we bought it but there was no awareness or acknowledgement of issues or a safety feature that would do this. This has happened to both my wife and me when driving; we began documenting the events - the last 3 are as follows: [XXX], midday. [XXX], VA, going downhill at ~70 mph, engine began stalling without warning when I eased off the gas to coast briefly downhill in the flow of traffic; steering and brake pedal began to freeze. I gave it gas, pumping the pedal to no immediate effect; a couple of seconds later it recovered and started up; making a loud buzzing noise. I avoided an accident in traffic by not panicking and because the vehicle behind us was not tailgating. [XXX], 7:08 pm. I [XXX] at ~62-65 mph, again in the middle lane cruising with traffic, Auto-idle turned off. When we coasted for a few seconds in the flow, the engine suddenly lost power; would not accelerate or re-engage. After a couple of seconds the engine came back to full power with a slight buzz (high pitch) – not as loud as previous times. [XXX]/ 8:13 pm. On [XXX] going through Jacksonville downtown on the way to the airport. In the middle lane (second over from left lane) at ~60mph the engine started to lose power in spite of my foot being on the gas. I kept the gas applied and the engine power came back. No buzz sound. At ~ 31,531 mile on the odometer. Note that we changed dealers for the service – Honda of the Avenues, and they have had the truck a few times since the [XXX] event. They have been able to pick up one code when scanning the truck – for a “transmission event.” They cannot replicate the event. On multiple occasions at highway speeds when coasting for a few seconds roughly 50mph to 70mph, the truck begins to stall/ lose power. We thought it was related to the Auto-idle feature, but the last two events I had it turned off. This has happened 5 or 6 times to me and my wife since about six months after buying the truck. Four of the events - November 2023: [XXX] in New Jersey at ~50 mph, engine lost power, applying gas did nothing. A few seconds later it regained power and made a buzzing noise. [XXX]: On [XXX] in Virginia, going down hill at ~70 mph, the engine lost power without warning, steering & brake pedal began to freeze up as if the truck was turning off when coasting briefly down with the flow of traffic. I pumped the gas pedal to no avail - a couple of seconds later it recovered and started up - and buzzed loudly. I avoided an accident; luckily the vehicle behind us was not tailgating. No lights or warning appeared on the dash. The dealer scanned the truck's computer and they noted a transmission event code, but nothing more. Could not replicate the issue. [XXX], Jacksonville, FL [XXX] near [XXX] at ~62 mph, in the middle lane with Auto-idle turned off, engine began to lose power briefly with a slight Buzz (high pitch) when it "came back" to full power - again while cruising, almost coasting - to keep pace and distance from the vehicle in front of me. My wife witnessed the event and made note of the time and speed. [XXX], 8:13pm - on [XXX] going through Jax on the way to the airport to pick up my wife. Vehicle goes into limp mode, limited power, flashing check engine light This happens after extended period on highway (hour or more) below 20 degrees F. When you exit highway and come to a stop. All good as soon as you try to accelerate CEL starts flashing and I have reduced power. To correct this. The vehicle has to be shut off and restarted. This means it happens when pulling out into traffic from a stand still at a stop light stop sign. Limited to about 15 mph regardless of road pulling onto. Then have to pull over shut off and restart put back in drive and go. This is not ideal in most cases and dangerous. Honda released a TSB but will not cover if out of warranty. I filed case with Honda at 70 K. They agreed to pay for parts and labor minus $50 deductible and sales tax on parts. This affect all 2017 to 2023 and some 2024 vehicles with 3.5L engine. This first happened to me with roughly 2k miles on car and is sporadic. Only cold weather and matches their TSB. Happens frequently every winter for me. For last 3 years When I found Honda TSB 24-085 suddenly the dealer knew this was happening. Yet I have been complaining for 3 years of issue. Once I showed them tsb suddenly oh that’s what you mean.

The contact owns a 2022 Honda Ridgeline. The contact stated while driving at an undisclosed speed, the engine was abnormally loud before the vehicle lost motive power. The contact stated that the sound was extremely loud like the rod bearings were banging together. Additionally, several unknown warning lights were illuminated. The vehicle was driven to the shoulder of the road. The vehicle was then towed to the dealer where it was diagnosed with engine failure. The contact was informed that the engine needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and a case was filed. The failure mileage was approximately 50,150.

2022 Ridgeline's Auto Idle Engine Off/On activated while driving/moving. This week it occurred (Wednesday, Dec. 4, 2024) on I95 in Virginia when going down hill at approximately 70 mph. The engine ceased without warning and the steering and brake pedal began to freeze up when I had eased off the gas to coast briefly down hill (in order to keep in the flow of traffic). I then gave it gas, pumping the pedal, and a couple of seconds later it recovered and started up; the Truck’s starter buzzed loudly as it restarted. I avoided an accident in traffic by not panicking and luckily because the vehicle behind us was not tailgating and that the section of highway was straight and not on a bend - otherwise it could have been catastrophic. The rest of the trip we turned the feature off and the truck had no incidents. Based on the few previous events, which were at slower speeds, it seems that if the truck coasts even briefly the feature can trigger as if the sensor "senses" that the truck is not moving - and the engine turns off (previously it felt like the truck was stalling). I previously mentioned the incidents to the dealer service techs but there is no awareness or acknowledgement of the issue. This week I placed another call to the dealer and left a detailed message - but nobody at the dealer has acknowledged this is an issue.

The incident with my 2022 Honda Ridgeline Black Edition occurred while driving on the interstate from Minneapolis back to my home in Illinois (Chicago suburbs). While taking an exit ramp to a different interstate I slowed down before the turn and then, when accelerating to merge onto the other interstate, my Ridgeline "check engine" light began flashing and the vehicle began to limp along at a maximum speed of ~40MPH. I quickly pulled off to a parking lot and arranged for a tow truck for the next day, as it was very late in the evening and very cold. The next morning, I went to meet the tow truck at the parking lot, and I started up my Honda Ridgeline with no issues (and no check engine light). It was then that I found a message board conversation titled “Check engine light flashing after freeway driving” on the internet [XXX] ) and discovered this issue had been occurring with other Ridgelines in similar conditions - i.e., long drives in cold weather where the driver slows down and then accelerates. In all cases, it seems that simply turning off the vehicle and re-starting a few minutes later fixes the problem, but not before you encounter a potentially dangerous situation with a disabled car on the road. On [XXX] I took my Ridgeline in for service at my local Honda dealership (where I had purchased the vehicle in 2022) and they were unable to find any issues or error codes stored (no error codes being stored seems to be the common occurrence with other drivers who have had this issue). In my view, this issue, while somewhat uncommon due to the particular set of circumstances needed to produce the error, presents a major safety issue for the Honda Ridgeline as it can essentially disable your vehicle while driving on the interstate. I’m hopeful that the NHTSA can work with Honda to quickly diagnose and resolve this safety issue before it leads to tragic consequences. After driving approximately 2.5 hours at 70 miles per hour, I took an exit off of the interstate and stopped at the stoplight at the bottom of the exit ramp. After about 1 minute the light turned green and I accelerated sharply and turned left. The Check Engine Light started to flash and the vehicle experienced a significant loss of power. I was unable to accelerate to match the speed of the traffic around me and created a hazard while attempting to find a safe place to pull off the road. After about 1/4 of a mile I was able to pull off the road. I shut off the vehicle and waited about 5 minutes. I restarted the vehicle and the light didn't return and it had full power, so I completed my trip. Additional info, outdoor temp was 34 degrees F. I was driving into a 25 MPH headwind during the 2.5 hours of internet travel. I took the vehicle to the dealer as it is under warranty and has about 18,000 miles. Dealer removed intake manifold, removed water that had collected in the intake manifold and reassembled. Vehicle computer didn't store any codes. Dealer was unable to explain how the water got into the intake manifold or provide any satisfactory reason or logic as to why it would not occur again under the same conditions. My concern is that there is some design flaw inherit to the air intake of this engine that allows condensation to collect under some conditions and causes a misfire that puts it into a limp mode that diminishes performance until the engine is cycled off/on. It is difficult to understate how terrifying the experience is of having traffic wiz around you with horns blaring and not being able to move out of the way.

After driving for approximately 275 miles in winter temperatures but with normal driving conditions, upon taking a banked turn the check engine light flashed while the engine lost power and caused the car to begin shaking. I pulled over and was able to pull diagnostic codes from the vehicle. The vehicle reported that two cylinders were misfiring. Upon restarting the car the vehicle operated normally. I brought this vehicle in to the dealer who was familiar with the problem but responded that Honda has no resolution yet. This problem seems to affect multiple years and models of Honda vehicles (using the 3.5L engine).

Honda (America Honda Motor Co) is recalling certain 2020-2024 Ridgeline vehicles. The rearview camera (RVC) tailgate wire harness may fatigue and break, which can prevent the rearview camera image from displaying.
Consequence & remedy
Consequence: A rearview camera that does not display an image can reduce the driver's rear view, increasing the risk of a crash.
Remedy: Dealers will replace the RVC tailgate wire harness, free of charge. Owner letters were mailed November 8, 2024. Owners may contact Honda service at 1-888-234-2138. Honda's number for this recall is YI7.

Honda (American Honda Motor Co.) is recalling certain 2020-2021 Civic, 2020-2023 Ridgeline, 2021-2023 Passport, 2021-2022 Pilot, and 2020 Acura MDX vehicles. The tie rod fastener that connects the brake booster and the brake master cylinder may have been improperly assembled during manufacturing, which can cause the brake master cylinder to separate from the booster assembly.
Consequence & remedy
Consequence: Brake master cylinder separation can cause a loss of brake function and increase the risk of a crash.
Remedy: Dealers will inspect and repair the brake booster assembly as necessary, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed August 7, 2023. Owners may contact Honda customer service at 1-888-234-2138. Honda's numbers for this recall are VEU, AEV, and ZET.

The complaints allege that the engine fails to restart on its own from a complete stop at a traffic light or road intersection with the AIS function engaged. The subject vehicles are equipped with a 3.5L engine with a 9-speed automatic transmission. On January 6, 2023, Honda released service bulletins 23-008 and 23-009. These service bulletins address the failure to restart issue in the 2016-2019MY Honda Pilot vehicles, as well as the 2015-2020 Acura TLX, 2016-2020 Acura MDX, 2019-2022 Honda Passport, and 2020-2023 Honda Ridgeline vehicles. The repair outlined in the service bulletins is a two-stage countermeasure to remedy the issue. The first stage is a Programmed Fuel Injection (“PGM-FI”) software update. The second stage is only deployed if the software update fails to remedy the issue. The second stage, depending on the model and model year, consists of replacement of the starter assembly, starter relays, and a valve adjustment. On February 13, 2024, the Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) opened Preliminary Evaluation PE24004 to assess alleged failures of the rear-view camera (RVC) in 2020-2023 Model Year (MY) Honda Ridgeline vehicles. At this time, ODI has received a total of 50 complaints with allegations of the RVC image failing to display when the vehicle was in reverse. The RVC wire harness is routed near the hinge in the tailgate, in a location where frequent opening and closing of the tailgate causes bending stress on the harness. Honda determined the wire harness was manufactured with a material which is permeable to water and salt, which when it freezes and thaws, combined with tailgate usage, ultimately leads to breakage of the wiring in the tailgate harness. This results in a failure to display the RVC image. On May 9, 2024, Honda filed a Part 573 Safety Recall Report recalling all 2020-2024 MY Honda Ridgeline vehicles. The dealer will replace the RVC tailgate harness with a wire harness that is manufactured by a new supplier and has improved material properties to withstand wear from bending. In view of Honda filing recall 24V-321 addressing the subject of this investigation, ODI is closing this Preliminary Evaluation. NHTSA reserves the right to take additional action if warranted by future circumstances.
